Philosophy is a very important part of people’s lives. Philosophy is quite basically asking inquiries about existence, reality and nature of knowledge. To better understand philosophy we must look throughout history. Looking back through history helps better show what the philosophers thought during the time period in which they lived. The relativity of the theories, to the time period, is a very important factor in how efficient these theories they were. The first philosopher’s ideas to people today would be considered either very basic, or insane. Yet, in the time period they lived in, they were considered to be geniuses. Also, looking back through time and studying philosophers and what they believed can help create a better idea for our own philosophical creations. The first philosophers were also known as the Presocratics. They were called this because they were in a time period before Socrates was born. They mainly focused on answering what is the explanation of nature, also referred to as metaphysics. Even before the Presocratic philosophers, we need to look at the ancient Greek poets that created myths and examine how their stories came into being made and how it had an effect on their civilization. These myths are a part of Philosophy because they were the first ideas about creation. The transition between these mythic worldviews and pre-Socratic philosophers’ worldview was important because it lays down the structural work for great philosophers to learn from them and develop further theories based on their findings. Homer was a very influential and significant part of the Greek civilization. This transition between myth and philosophy is very important because it allows for other great minds to learn from it and apply it to their own philosophical views. If this transition had not happened then we might still be basing our philosophy on supernatural and fictional explanations. It greatly increased our philosophical mindset years ahead. It also leads in to the Axial Age of Greece and served as the introduction period to kick off the real westernization of Greece. Greek mythology is thought to be very fascinating to many people; I personally wanted to learn more about it and the Hellenistic period. A new cultural age was led by Alexander the Great when he took over Egypt and the Near East, historians refer to this period as Hellenistic.
For this paragraph I will talk about religion. The greeks were polytheistic. Polytheistic means that you worship many gods. Some of the gods that they worshiped were Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, ect. They were worshipped on Mount Olympus. Poseidon and Athena play a big role in The Odyssey. One of Homer's ideas was dues ex machina, which means that a god swoops down and solves your problems and makes peace. I know one led to the other because the events in real life led to the creation of the event in The Odyssey.
Homer was the ancient Greek poet said to have lived between around the 8th and 9th century B.C. Some believe that he was born on the island of Chios and others say he was in Ionia. He was said to be a court singer and a storyteller. He is famous for the writings of the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Socrates is easily one of the most well known names in the history of philosophy. He is even portrayed via the magic of Hollywood time travel in the popular movie “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and was more recently quoted inaccurately on a t-shirt as saying, “I drank what?” Despite his fame, Socrates was not the first philosopher by far, and certainly not the earliest to make meaningful contributions to the field of philosophy. Some of the great “Pre-Socratics” include Anaximenes, Parmenides, Xenophane, and Democritus. The philosophical issues of their days were significantly different from the popular discussions today, though no less relevant, and provide ample fodder for the cannon of philosophical consideration. The issues in consideration here that may benefit from discussion are the problem of the one and the many, the distinction between phusis and nomos as regards the nature of god(s), and distinction between appearance and reality. Appropriate and thorough discussion of these topics in the pre-Socratic context is certain to yield insight into the connection between these three issues.

Dr. James seeked that the Greek Philosophy is just stolen Egyptian Philosophy. Way before it actually reached Athens, the teachings called the Egyptian Mysteries got to other lands first. The history of the Greek philosophy was a compilation and plan executed by Aristotle at his school. Greek Philosophy as it was called and it different to the Greeks as the way they live. The period between 640-322 B.C. was the time period of Greek Philosophy and its external and internal wars was just not suitable for producing philosophers.
“Myths continue to fascinate us” (Kromholz and McCarter 1). In every new generation, many children are intrigued when they read Greek Mythology, which makes it valuable teaching tool in high school literature. This beneficial teaching device should have the priority in the on-going debate about the implementation of Greek Mythology. Implementing fundamental morals of life, providing interpretations to unexplained phenomena of the world, and stimulating the minds of students to extrapolate the content, the analysis of Greek Mythology should remain as part of high school standards, despite possible contrariety with a student's religion, or set of beliefs.

Aesop, Hesiod, Pindar, and Sappho were all great Greek poets that have work still alive today, but one author stands out above the rest. His name is Homer. Homer was a Greek poet that lived somewhere on the coast of Asia Minor into Greek territory. He grew up to become the most well known Greek poet ever. He is also one of the most influential writers in Western culture to have existed. Along with his writings being influential to others, these passages were shaped by his own experiences and learned knowledge. Homer’s epics and other writings were influenced by the traditions of storytelling, Greece’s history, and his religious beliefs.

A wealth of culture, great thinkers, and advancements sprung forth from its mountainous peninsulas and islands. Ancient Greece would influence the whole of western civilization as we know it today. The Ancient Greek civilization flourished for over a thousand years, overcoming adversities of every kind and still somehow becoming home to some of the most famous people, ideas, and buildings of all time.

Throughout history there have been many philosophers that have contributed to the way we view the world today. Although each philosopher’s way of thinking was unique, their ideas would usually derive from a previous philosopher. Greek philosophers are especially the most well known by today’s society. Where would we be without the theories of Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle? Although some of their theories may not be correct, they still made us raise questions about the world we live in and come up with answers that we rely on today. Mathematics, physics, and evolution are just a few subjects of the many that we would have little knowledge about without the theories of these ancient Greek philosophers.
