In 1946 two brothers, Ben and Truitt Cathy, opened a diner in Atlanta Georgia called the Dwarf House Grill. The Dwarf House served a variety of typical grill food that included everything from burgers to hot dogs. All of that changed in 1961 when a poultry supplier stopped buy and sold Mr. Cathy chicken breast that were too large for the trays that they typically cooked the chicken on. Truitt Cathy decided that he did not want to throw out the chicken so he breaded the chicken and put it in the pressure fryer. He realized that he could cook the chicken in the same amount of time that it took to cook a hamburger and it tasted great. He had hamburger buns and pickles in the restaurant already and this is how the first chicken sandwich was made. In 1967 the first Chick-Fil-A store was opened in Atlanta’s Greenbrier Shopping Center and in 1986 the first freestanding franchise was opened. Today there are more than one thousand seven hundred Chick-Fil-A restaurants in thirty nine states. One of the ways that Chick-Fil-A has been able to make their company a success is through their unique approach to customer service. They are able to provide excellent customer service by turning individuals into team players. Teams can be seen in the hiring process, community involvement, national sponsorship, knowing what customers want, and cooperate culture. All of these different teams lead to excellence in customer service.
The main consumer characteristic that Cracker Barrel Old Country Store sets their standards on is “Pleasing people”. (Etzel, Walker, Stanton. 2001 pg. 204) A review of the Cracker Barrel Old Country store states, “This restaurant has a combo of good food, good service, and atmosphere. The gift shop is trendy, and affords one a place to browse. Do your browsing after the meal, for service is fast and efficient. One dines among country antiques that serve as decor. The country plates are a delight, and one must try the daily specials. Don't order dessert if you're not hungry. The blackberry cobbler and lemon icebox pie are superb. This is home cooking with affordable prices and great atmosphere.” (http://stlouis.citysearch.com/profile/3855636) Cracker Barrel stores appeal to both the traveler and the local customer and have consistently been a consumer favorite. Cracker Barrel was ranked as the top family dining chain for the eleventh consecutive year in the 2000 Restaurants & Institutions magazine "Choice in Chains" annual customer survey. It was also named “Best Family Dining” restaurant by Restaurant & Institutions magazine for the tenth consecutive year. The R&I award is based on a national consumer survey that evaluates chains on seven separate attributes: food quality, menu variety, value, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, and convenience. For 2000, Cracker Barrel scored highest among family dining establishments on every one of the attributes.
The chicken tenders are fried to a golden brown crisp. With every bite you take you can taste and feel how tender and fresh the chicken is. The fries are cooked to perfection. They are not too hard and not too soft and salted just right. The Texas toast is immaculate. It is warm, fluffy, crunchy, and buttery. With every order, Raising Cane’s adds their special sauce. The sauce completely complements the chicken, fries, and toast. It is tart, tangy, and sweet and has a little pow.
Everyone loves to eat chicken, whether it is baked, fried, bone-in, or boneless. However in America, there are thousands of restaurants that serve chicken. Wingstop has been a franchise that has gained popularity over the most recent years. The Rapper Rick Ross even owns a few Wingstops and raps about them in his songs (Schlossberg). However Wingstop has gained some competition over the years with several other chicken restaurants opening up all over the valley.
TCBY has been a frozen treats product innovator from the day its first shop opened in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1981. The great-tasting, low-fat frozen yogurt concept received an enthusiastic response from an increasingly health-conscious public. Its trendy new product propelled the company to the forefront of franchising, and was the ‘first in a long line of ground-breaking menu items that anticipated consumer preferences and continually refreshed the TCBY concept’ (Conlin 2001, p. 133). But TCBY products are just one of the reasons that thousands of operators have concluded that a TCBY franchise is the preferred opportunity in branded frozen treats, and a dynamic partner in any co-branded concept. However, TCBY is facing a lot of problems, both internal and external, during the difficult period from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, especially the problem with its franchising system. The purpose of this report is to provide a comprehensive situation analysis of TCBY, with special reference to its franchising system, and identify several concerned issues of TCBY and its franchisees, and how these issues have negatively affected the relationship between them. Furthermore, this report also provides three recommendations in the attempt to diminish these concerned issues and better maintain the relationship between TCBY and its franchisees, and most importantly, help TCBY to increase the company’s performance and achieve their strategic goals in the next few years.
Over the years, Keebler has acquired several other producers of cookies and crackers (i.e., Bake-Line Products, Inc. – The nation’s leading producer of private-label cookies and crackers in 1993; merger in June 1996 with Sunshine Biscuit Company – now owned by Keebler Foods Corporation).
Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, The Kroger Company is one of the largest supermarket retailers across the United States. Founded in 1883, Barney Kroger invested his life savings of $372 to open his first grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati. (Kroger, 2011). Barney was quite proud. He was the first grocer ever to have a bakery, to sell meat, and to sell other groceries all in one store. From the start, Barney operated his business with a simple motto: “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not want yourself.” (Kroger, 2011). Today, one hundred and twenty-eight years later, the Kroger Company is still following Barney’s motto.
The Einstein/Noah Bagel Corporation began as Progressive Bagel Concepts, Inc. in March 1995 when Boston Chicken, Inc. acquired three of the leading retail bagel companies located in all over different regions of the country. Einstein’s Bros. Bagels is one of the largest bagel retail stores in more than 29 different states. Some of the other companies that are included under the Einstein/Noah Bagel Corporation are Offerdahl 's Bagel Gourmet, Bagel & Bagel, and Brackman Brothers. All of these companies had a lot in common and they each offered new bagels flavors in communities that had never had previous exposure to a bagel retail store. These three companies joined together to create a national chain that focuses on baked bagels as well as complimentary goods. The different stores each offer different creative bagel options as well as breakfast and lunches which include soups, salads, and a variety of baked goods. Einstein’s also has it’s own coffee brand called Melvyn’s Darn Good Coffee which is unique to the company. Melvyn’s Darn Good coffee offers a wide variety of different coffee flavors as well as holiday themed coffee throughout different seasons.
Likewise, there are some results that can be made from having Mexican cuisines restaurants in America. Generally speaking, Mexican restaurants tend to be heavily stereotyped because, “when most Americans think of Mexican cooking, it’s more fajitas, burritos, and nachos that come into mind” (Wolcott). Neither of those choices are real authentic food to the Mexican culture but Americans choose to think of it as one because they can be misinformed by the cuisine. Thus, Jennifer Wolcott explores Rick Bayless’s cookbook in which he aims to knock down the stereotypes that come with Mexican cuisine. Specifically, “he is on a mission to help others get beyond these stereotypes and experience the fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and lively communal
Panera Bread Company is an intriguing business operation that came to be an exceptional “fast casual” restaurant through observing, learning, acquiring, and divesting of unprofitable assets. Panera’s history began when Pavailler, a French oven manufacturer, opened a demonstration bakery in Boston by the name of Au Bon Pain in 1976. In 1978 an adventure capitalist by the name of Louis Kane purchased Au Bon Pain. Kane had great aspirations for expanding Au Bon Pain, but had little success. In 1981 Robert Shaich, a Harvard Business graduate, small business owner, and master baker, merged his own cookie bakery with that of Kane’s bread bakery forming Au Bon Pain Co. Inc. With Shaich’s smart business sense and Kane’s business connections the two partners, and co-CEOs, were able to successfully expand Au Bon Pain Co. Inc. while at the same time reducing debts incurred by Kane’s initial unsuccessfulness. In 1985 Kane and Shaich successfully transitioned their bakery into a “fast casual” restaurant by adding sandwiches to their menu. The year 1991 marked perhaps the greatest accomplishment for Kane and Shaich as this was the year they took Au Bon Pain public.

Fried chicken, a meat product that uses parts of chickens that are “coated with batter and seasoned, flour, and fried” (The Free Dictionary). It is popular all over the world, but is especially popular in the Southern community. However, in the African-American community, this meat product has taken on a racial meaning in the United States. It has become stereotypical for African-Americans to love fried chicken, along with watermelons, cornbread, and collard greens. This new meaning to fried chicken has affected our social community as well. The reason why this stereotype exists in the first place is hidden in history, dating back to the years when slavery was common.
Hinkel is the German word for chicken. So yes, Fredericksburg has a festival all about chickens (Experience PA 1). At this three day long festival, persons can join in activities such as a 5K run, a cooking contest, and lots of games (Hinkelfest 2003 1). The biggest part of the Hinkelfest would have to be all the food. Since the festival is to celebrate chicken, all the dishes there are made with chicken in some way. Kim Zellers says, “The chicken inspired dishes are unlike anywhere else in the world, they are just that good.” Shanna Drahowsky added, “there are a lot of different foods made with chicken that I never heard of before like chicken hot dogs, chicken burgers, and chicken egg rolls.”
What is barbecue? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary the term “barbecue” has multiple definitions .The first definition that we are most familiar with is; to roast or broil on a rack or revolving pit over or before a source of heat. The second definition is the social gathering especially in the open air at which barbecued food is eaten (Merriam Webster). While you are familiar with both of these, barbeque defines a true southern summer meal that unites everyone. When you come to the south and ask for a plate of barbeque you usually will receive pulled pork , hash with rice, potato salad with a side of hot sauce and homemade BBQ sauce to smother your meat in. Better yet, you may receive ribs that are rubbed down and smothered in homemade barbecue sauce.
