High School Soccer Captain
Even though that being the captain of the soccer varsity team in high school is the most prestigious position you can have, it is also the one that requires more skills; and not only soccer skills. Suppose that Lamatepec High School from El Salvador is known for being the best soccer team in the nation, but this year things are not going well. With only four games left they are in 3rd in the table, they have lost the past three games against the worst teams in the league and the four games ahead are against some of the top teams. In this model leaders “select” specific behaviors that are best for the needs of his goal. According to the author there are four behaviors in the path goal theory that a leader could follow. One is the directive leadership, where the leader informs the followers what is expected from them. Another is the supportive leadership, that is when the leader shows concern for the followers and have friendly interactions with them. Third is participative leadership, when the captain gets involved with his team to achieve the goal as a group. Finally, is the achievement leadership; occurs when the leader demand from the followers challenging goals so they perform their best. It is a continual process of assessing and reevaluating the team and environment while adjusting the leadership style and behavior to maximize the performance and satisfaction of the team.
My impression of leadership is the ability to motivate, inspire, set a visualization, connect, and lead by example. To become a successful leader you have to be able to convince your followers that you are trustworthy of being followed. During this semester, we have learned many, if not all of the major leadership theories and how they play a role in our everyday lives. But personally, a few of these leadership models caught me and intrigued me the whole semester so much that this paper is going to predominately be referenced about them. For example, the proposed framework that organizes leadership theories based on each theory 's focus and approach. Focus is referred to as whether or not leadership is viewed as a set of traits or actions.
Captains of sports teams are given the stereotype that they are the most athletic player on the team, scoring the most goals and handling the ball best. In truth, captains have a lot of work they have to do that doesn’t even involve playing the sport. Captains are the most looked at player of the game; other players, younger kids and coaches look to them to set examples. They have to set examples in every aspect of the game; athleticism might be part of their job but it is not limited to it. The captain of any sports team must set the leadership standard for commitment, confidence, intelligence, and attitude.
The leader is required to make all decisions and fully inform others of what is happening. This is alternatively known as “micro-management” as the leader is heavily involved and carefully supervises the group members. This is a pecking order or top-down approach where the subordinates or group members must do what exactly what they are told to do. The leader sets defined roles and tasks for the group members to complete. All communication is downstream, commencing with the leader. According to Hersey, the followers have a low skill set but a high level of commitment. This is often seen in sports with young athletes who are keen to participate but have a low skill level as they are new to the game. I did not have to use this leadership style during the tournament as I was lucky enough to have a team comprised of individuals of natural sporting ability, even though most people were not basketball
This model describes what makes up an authentic leader by saying, “Authentic leaders demonstrates their purpose, practice their values consistently, and lead with their hearts as well as their heads” (George et al. 152). The Authentic Leader Model also talks about balancing intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. A leader must know what drives them based on internal motivations and external factors. The drive that a leader demonstrates will reflect and spread to your subordinates (George et al. 152). The aspect of drive through intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the Authentic Leader Model relates to the tenet of being a determined leader. If a leader has their intrinsic and extrinsic goals established, then he or she will be able to lead the group towards the direction they envisioned. Additionally, when directing your team towards a goal, it is vital to also help those under you to accomplish their personal goals as well. That is what Coach Marcelo did a great job on. A man by the name of Daniel Goleman in the Military Course Reader believed that all special leaders share a common trait which is emotional intelligence (Goleman 102). The five components of Emotional Intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill (Goleman 103). In particular, the motivation portion of emotional intelligence is seen in this tenet. Through the determination that a leader displays, his or her subordinates will become motivated to accomplish the goal. This motivation is defined as having a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status (Goleman 103). A way to possibly enhance the motivation you may have is through the bases of power. Within the determination to achieve a goal, a leader can be informational and influential through rational persuasion. The leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by example and then the other will followed him after being motivated. The above diagram can be explain as; with the three combinations, the person or the leader will influence the other people or the follower to achieve the purpose or goal. In order to achieve the goal, the leader must have a deep rooted commitment to the goal that he will strive to achieve even if nobody follows him (Wong, 2007). The follower also can influence the leader in order to achieve the goal.

Leadership is necessary for a group to accomplish goals. Leadership according to Lamberton and Minor (2014), is the ability to impact people to attain a goal. A leader according to Gaiter (2013), sets direction and influences others to accomplish goals and directs cohesiveness. A leaders’ goal is not just the success of the team but, also the success of individuals on the team, a leader must motivate, inspire and empower others for success (Gaiter, 2013). To accomplish these goals a leader will utilize a leadership style.
Do teams need a leader? What makes a good leader? A leader, as defined by Robbins, De Cenzo, and Coulter (2015), is “someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority” (p. 337). Leadership comes in several different models and theories, with varying degrees of acceptance and rejection as well as success and failure. One such model is The Fiedler Contingency Model. How does this model interact with the most important performance outcomes of teams? There as several theories on leadership, the two that this paper will focus on is the Transformational leader’s theory and the Servant leadership theory. How are these theories being used by today’s leaders? In the next paragraph, we will look at The Fiedler Contingency Model.
Path-goal theory deals with the leader's style to motivate followers, to accomplish set goals (Northouse, 2010). The path-goal theory is simply the implication that a leader works with an individual to establish a goal. The leader does this by individual motivation to achieve the proposed goal, while working through obstacles that may hinder achieving that goal (Whitener, 2007). The basic assumption of path-goal theory is that the following motivates subordinates: the capability to perform the work, their efforts will result in a certain outcome, and the payoff will be worthwhile (Whitener, 2007). The path-goal theory is a pragmatic approach that the leader uses to motivate the followers to achieve the set goals.
Leadership is defined as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2007). Theoretically, there are three basic ways to explain how people become leaders: the trait leadership theory, the great event theory and the process leadership theory (Bass, 1990). Trait theory is a situation where some personality traits may lead people naturally into leadership roles. A crisis or important event may cause a person to rise to the occasion, which brings out extraordinary leadership qualities in an ordinary person; this is the Great Events Theory.The process theory is a situation when leadership skills are learnt.
