The main components of the human cardiovascular system include the heart and blood vessels. The heart beats in order to pump blood to the vessels which are responsible for circulating it to cell tissue throughout the body. During the homeostasis process, the circulatory system provides oxygen and nutrients to the cell while removing waste products from the tissue fluid such as carbon dioxide within the lungs. This process is required for cell function.
Each beat of the heart is referred to as the cardiac cycle. When the heart beats, the atria contract simultaneously followed by the ventricles contracting simultaneously, this process is known as systole. The resting phase of the four chambers between beats is referred to as diastole.
On average, the heart rate of a healthy adult is 70 beats per minute with an average resting pulse rate of 60-80 BPM. Blood entering arteries causes their walls to expand and withdraw, this process creates the pulse that can be felt close to the surface of the skin.
