Healthy School Lunch Issue
Schools all across America struggle with the controversial topic on school lunches. Some say that they should be healthy and not allow any type of junk food in lunches or vending machines. Students and parents that are paying for these lunches have a lot to say on this subject, and even school administrators have voiced their opinion. Although schools across the nation believe they need to have healthier options, many kids go home hungry and many schools end up broke. My argument is that school lunches do not provide enough calories for growing kids, especially athletes. There is not enough food on the trays in many schools to fill a child up. Schools also tend to lose a tremendous amount of money due to the fact that “healthier” food options cost more (Sifferlin). Also, many kids are not

Packing lunches isn’t always as easy as it sound. That is time consuming, and parents rely on the schools, the place they send their kids every day, to provide them with what they need. Parents are paying for these lunches along with the food they provide their children at home. If we changed the school lunch program, the majority of students would be happier and more satisfied, parents would be happier because their money is not being wasted on food that’s not getting eaten, and schools would not be losing money from expensive food that is getting wasted. Schools all over struggle with keeping students satisfied with their lunches. I believe students need bigger and better lunches in order to satisfy them and give them enough. Most of the time, students (especially high schoolers) need more food than anyone else. Athletes and just growing bodies in general need more calories than what the schools are providing them, and I think school lunches should be evaluated again. Maybe then students would be
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. Garland mentioned that the students are filling up with fat, salt and sugar rather than filling up with fruit, whole grains and vegetables. Schools should be about healthiness, and well balanced diets. With having Students eat healthy can boost up their energy and ability to learn. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. It was nothing but healthy food like whole grain, no sweets, two scoops of fruits and vegetables. At Odessa they had a school store loaded with junk food that would be sold out by forth period. When the law came to the school there was nothing but baked chip and replaced with other baked nutrition food or we had nothing at all. The drink machines were changed out
has to spend more money on changing school lunch system from eliminating unnecessary spending portion of system and create farming class. As reported by Cooper, “ The National School Lunch Program needs 8 billion dollars to feed 30 million children a year to serve high quality foods.” However, this price of amount has to be double to serve healthy foods to students because our next generation has to grow up with high quality foods not with low quality foods. Moreover, according to Cooper, the U.S. spends more than 100 million dollars on fast foods portion which the U.S. suppose to spend less amount of money on fast foods to improve the entire food system of the country. If the U.S. government lower the expense of fast food system and raises the amount of money for school lunches, entire schools of the U.S. would get positive results. For example, students could brainstorm very fast as Albert Einstein, and gain more energy to work out on their gym classes. Furthermore, school have to create agriculture class for students to have strong knowledges in foods. Students can literally be ware of what they eat at their lunch times; they will know vegetables grow in the ground and how foods are really fresh. Therefore, schools must provide farming class as in Berkeley; students have rights to know how foods are important to them. As a result, students could get a lot of benefits for changing school
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.
Allowing healthier school lunches will decrease obesity in children because it will give them the proper nutrition to reduce the risk of health issues. Since obesity causes many health issues, maintaining a proper nutrition will reduce the risk of health issues. According to Star- Telegram, a daily newspaper that serves Fort Worth and areas of North Texas states, “[School lunches that have] a meal of pizza sticks, a banana, raisins and whole milk has given way to whole wheat spaghetti with meat sauce, a whole wheat roll green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwi and low-fat milk … This change will help more than 2.4 million Texas students who receive a free or reduced- price school lunch to lead healthier, more active lives—in and out of the classroom”(Par. 2 and 4). School lunches are supposed to guarantee students a well balance meal, so they can have the energy to proceed with their classes throughout the day. Meanwhile, students who receive a f...
One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition they have trouble focusing in school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day. But, if they do not like the food served they won’t eat so they starve for the rest of the school day, which can
“Our Schools need to start teaching kids how to be healthy.”- Unknown. School lunches have created a chronic problem in a school setting, and since it hasn't been fixed, 6-11 year olds have had a 17% increased chance of becoming obese (Centers for Disease control and Prevention). Most school districts don't even bother changing the food restrictions just so they can please their students. Unhealthy school lunches are a huge problem among children in the United States, it can cause obesity, stress, and many other problems.
We cannot have a school lunch reform where the needs of all students are not met. If only some, or less than the majority, of students are receiving the nutritional values they need, we need to adapt the reform to further achieve better standards for school lunch programs. For example, after a student finishes their meal, schools could offer a second serving of protein to their students. In effect, this will add a higher amount of calories to the students’ daily diets.
The shocking truth about our school lunches is that they are not health for young kids. The meat most schools use K.F.C and Campbell soup refuse to buy such meat. This shows that school lunch is not very health for kids if fast food won’t even use it. Schools are also
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Unfortunately, that is not the case in most schools across the nation. The quality of health of the food being served in school lunches is extremely poor and was allowed to decline even more with a new set of rule changes. However, there are some improvements currently being made to increase the quality of health of the food being served to students, including teaching them all about food and its nutritional information, both good and bad. In order for students to eat healthier lunches at school, the USDA needs to implement healthier ...
School lunch is an obvious problem that has yet to be fixed. Mark Samuelsson once said, “We struggle with eating healthily, obesity, and access to good nutrition for everyone. But we have a great opportunity to get on the right side of this battle by beginning to think differently about the way that we eat and the way that we approach food.” A well know fact to almost all students and their parents is that there are many problems with school lunches and it needs to change. Not only is school lunch unhealthy, but it also does not taste good most of the time. Some people feel that school lunch is not that big of a deal so it should be very cheaply processed in factories and preserved, but that is not the case. In order to solve the lingering
First, longer school lunches will cause classes to be shorter, resulting in less learning time. The students will not gain information quickly, and would have less time to ask teachers questions. Teachers would have to stay at school longer. Teachers already have to stay after school to grade assignments, and bring work home as well. They will have to plan lessons and grade. If they do this, they will be extremely tired and will not be attentive in class. If they are tired, they could fall asleep in class, and might not teach the best that they can. Students already having less learning time will get terrible teaching and information, and then they will not be smart. Non-intelligent students might not get into university or college, and would have to work without a degree, earning little money. Longer lunches will have an impact on teachers, and students' futures. The school district should not agree to have longer lunches, as it will be awful for students.
It would be a great idea for all schools to switch to an healthier school lunch. They should change it because it will help children focus on test, quizzes, and inside of the classroom when taking notes. The kinds of foods that should be token away is the kids least favorite foods. For example kids will write down the most ten hated school foods served, which ever is the most voted gets token away. Then kids could give options of healthy school lunches to be replaced.
As well as socialization, many students simply do not like school lunches. This could be due to the fact that they are overcooked, undercooked, or it just does not taste good. A school newspaper did research and they concluded that, “School lunch is notoriously bad due to the fact that it doesn’t taste good, has a limited menu, and oftentimes consists of uncooked food,” (Yearwood). Therefore, students don’t want to eat school lunches because they are gross most of the time. Lastly, students want to leave school for lunch because they get to choose what they want to
Reform in school lunch is needed because it contributes to childhood obesity. Students in the United States have the choice to bring their own lunch to school or buy lunch from the school cafeteria. The lunch served in schools mostly varies between different unhealthy options, such as pizza, hamburgers, and fries. While fruits and vegetables are mostly limited, there are a few options. Since the majority of students have to pay for their lunch, they want to get their money's worth of food, thus leading to big portions of unhealthy food.
Students should be given a longer time to eat their lunch. Students should be given longer lunch hours because they end up eating less with less time. In the article, “ Kids Who Are Time Crunched at School Toss More and Eat Less”, it states, “ Kids who had less than twenty minutes to eat we’re consuming, across the board, less of everything.” It is not healthy to not eat lunch and if students end up eating less of it they will never be full. Also in the article is explains that is a bad thing for
