INTRODUCTION
This assignment will focus on one of the extremely important topics of the many hazards in the healthcare work place that may pose as a threat to my health and safety in the Care Industry.
In my opinion it is vital for me as a prospective Healthcare Assistant to be fully compliant on a consistent continual basis when taking all potential hazards into consideration.
Part I - Potential hazards that may affect me as an employee in the healthcare profession
1. MANUAL HANDLING
It is of my opinion that proper technique and knowledge of manual handling is vital for my health and to my long term ambitions with regards to progression in the Care Industry.
I believe that the majority of back injuries occur due to ignorance with regards to people not making enough time to transfer heavy loads from one place to another thus resulting in the famous ‘lazy mans load’ injury.
Within the Care Industry the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (2010) stated that “nursing aides, orderlies and attendants had the highest rate of musculoskeletal disorders of all occupations in 2010”.
According to the Health Service Authority (“HSA”) website (2014); “A lack of mechanical handling equipment eg,trolleys and other aids can give cause for injury”
I must stress that is it of extreme importance to adhere to the class note guidelines set out by Lowry (2014) who states that “when viewing the person as a load, consider the following; weight, height and mobility”. I also believe that it is important to ensure that mechanical equipment such as trolleys and hoists are in excellent working condition. When taking these last two points into consideration the risk of injury should be greatly reduced.
2. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT ...

...rds to my role in the workplace is extremely important at all times. I believe that concentrating on the hazards that may affect me personally will benefit me from a health, safety and welfare point of view. This continuous education and awareness will not only have positive results for me as an employee but it will be of the utmost benefit to those who will rely on me to provide a reasonably practical safe environment namely my fellow employees and my residents.

The Regulations set out a framework to help employers avoid or reduce the risk of injury resulting from manual handling activities. The basic principle is that where manual handling of loads, which involves a risk of injury (particularly to the back) is present, the employer must take measures to avoid or reduce the need for such manual handling.
Forklift wellbeing is a noteworthy sympathy toward stockroom administrators as forklift related passings have been a noteworthy reason for mechanical passings and mischances almost consistently for as long as 20 years. By and large, there are more than 100 passings in the United States each year. 10's of 1000's of wounds happen every year from mishaps that could have been dodged by appropriate forklift preparing. The most widely recognized damage or passing happens when a forklift tips more than, a person on foot is hit, the administrator is not focusing, or falling burdens.

The leading cause of injury to nursing and hospital staff is the repeated manual lifting, and lifting and transferring of patients. This increasing incident rates cost to healthcare organizations. “Safe Patient Handling” programs have become one of the top initiatives for healthcare organizations. With the help of this program, work-related injuries and injuries due to patient falls can be reduced. Hill-Rom’s high technologies, processes, and tools assist hospitals to enhance outcomes for patients.
Each year this panel of experts put a microscope on patient safety across the board. They decide where upmost attention needs to be paid. Sometimes items leave the list because there are been strides take to improve in that area and sometimes it continues to stay on the list because they believe the relevance and importance is growing. The overall goal for the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) plan is to meet the challenge of educating and preparing future nurses to have the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are essential to frequently progress the quality and safety of the healthcare systems in the continuous improvement of safe practice (QSEN, 2014).Safety reduces the possibility of injury to patients and nurses. It is achieved through system efficiency and individual work performance. Organizations determine which technologies have an effective protocol with efficient practices to support quality and safety care. Guidelines are followed to reduce potential risks of harm to nurses or others. Appropriate policies
Keeping patients safe is essential in today’s health care system, but patient safety events that violate that safety are increasing each year. It was only recently, that the focus on patient safety was reinforced by a report prepared by Institute of medicine (IOM) entitled ” To err is human, building a safer health system”(Wakefield & Iliffe,2002).This report found that approx-imately 44,000 to 98,000 deaths occur each year due to medical errors and that the majority was preventable. Deaths due to medical errors exceed deaths due to many other causes such as like HIV infections, breast cancer and even traffic accidents (Wakefield & Iliffe, 2002). After this IOM reports, President Clinton established quality interagency coordination task force with the help of government agencies. These government agencies are responsible for making health pol-icies regarding patient safety to which every HCO must follow (Schulman & Kim, 2000).
1. Do NOT lift an object if it is too heavy or too bulky for good balance. Get help or use mechanical aids such as a dolly or hand truck.
The machine that I chose to write about is an inclined plane more specifically a stretcher. An inclined plane is to help you lift heavy items. It is a very simple machine. We use inclined planes to lift our patients on a stretcher. We do not use incline plane that much in our CTE. We often lift heavy items recently we carried people on stretchers so I thought of inclined plane because that helps us lift our patients. We must lift our patient on all sides so that they can be safe and secure. If we did not use a stretcher to lift up our patients the force would be unimagenly too diffucult for us to handle. If we picked up our patient without a stretcher we would all have to be strong and there must be more people to lift our patient so that
For example, slide sheets that are made with low-friction material to easily repositions the patients in the bed; transfer belts are belts that are placed around the patient’s waist for transferring and assisting the patient during their walking rehabilitation; transfer board like banana and slide boards are used to bridge the gaps of transferring the patient from one surface to another; different hoist like mobile, standing and ceiling hoist are used to lift, assist the patient to stand up and to transfer the patient; stretcher that is use to carry the patient in a lying position and mobile chairs like wheelchairs to transport the patient in a sitting and standing position. Introduction Canadian health and safety legislation requires companies and organizations to make a commitment towards occupational health and safety. Maintaining a safe workplace environment has numerous benefits. A safe work environment can boost employee morale, increase productivity, and improve job satisfaction. For companies and organizations, these benefits can lead to less turnover and increased employee retention. They can also reduce absenteeism while improving the culture and image of a company or organization.
Safety is a primary concern in the health care environment, but there are still many preventable errors that occur. In fact, a study from ProPublica in 2013 found that between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year suffer preventable harm in the hospital (Allen, 2013). Safety in the healthcare environment is not only keeping the patient safe, but also the employee. If a nurse does not follow procedure, they could bring harm to themselves, the patient, or both. Although it seems like such a simple topic with a simple solution, there are several components to what safety really entails. Health care professionals must always be cautious to prevent any mishaps to their patients, especially when using machines or lifting objects, as it has a higher
A hazard is defined as an activity or object that has the potential to cause harm if contact is made with the person, object or activity (MHS, 1996; Harmse, 2007; HSE, 2006). These hazards in a work place need to be identified and dealt with accordingly to prevent any harm to employees or any individual acquainted to a certain activity or establishment. The key roles and principles of occupational hygiene are Anticipation, Identification, Evaluation and Control (Schoeman and van den Heever, 2014; Harmse, 2008; SAMTRAC, 2012). To practise in accordance to the above principle; a hazard identification and risk assessment needs to be conducted. Anticipation is the foreseeing of the activity
Chemical and fire hazards in the workplace cause serious injuries that in most cases are fatal.
