When you go to school for the day, do you feel safe? “Due to ongoing school safety issues around the country, there has been considerable debate over precautions needed to keep students and staff safe during the academic day”. Should that be with stricter gun laws? FBI involvement? Mental health reform? Or stronger school safeguards? In 2015, the average number of shootings per week, on average, on a school campus was 1 (Jill Berkowicz). In order to change what is happening in our schools we need to change the people, not the weapons. We do not need stricter gun laws, we need to help those people who think it is right to go and shoot at innocent children. 73% of school shooters had no prior criminal record, not even an arrest (Jill Berkowicz). …show more content…
“They were not allowed at his speech to the National Rifle Association (NRA). Nor were they allowed at most of his hotels, golf courses, and other properties”. But he wants them to be allowed at our schools, and many agree with him. Would our schools really be safer if firearms were allowed in our classroom? The answer should be no. Kids get their hands on anything they can grab, whether it is food or a phone. So why would they not get their hands on a gun? “According to FBI homicide data, of the 1,448 children who died as a result of gun violence in 2010, 165 of those deaths were at the hands of other children” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). Yes, trained teachers would keep firearms out of reach, but having them available in the classroom increases the chances of something to go wrong. “Having guns within reach of children is an invitation for them to use them” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). We should be doing everything to keep guns out of our school. We all love our teachers dearly, but I would not want them to risk their lives in front of a gun. “Just because you can help a student read and write, doesn’t mean you’re good in a gunfight” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). In Document C, it is stated that “School Safety: A Shared Responsibility”. This statement is very true, however the teachers should not have to keep this responsibility by having a gun in the classroom. The answer is not more
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
That is why Rebekah Elliott’s article “The Real School Safety Debate: Why Legislative Responses Should Focus on Schools and Not on Guns” would be valuable to include. Elliot writes that to properly provide safety into schools is to put more funding into higher security and individual school safety programs. Like many writers, she agrees that the Sandy Hook incident shifted America’s views on the second amendment but she believes that having armed teachers could be a safety risk in itself. Her argument is that although it would be more cost efficient to arm teachers than to hire more security, it could increase the liability for negligence if there was a result in injuring a student (2015
One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. Changing the GFSZA would make students tense and distract children from learning. Citizens from CNN Politics say, “72.4% of educators said they would be unlikely to bring a firearm to school if allowed to do so.” This data shows that the majority of teachers do not even want possession of a gun in the classroom. School officers have the right to carry guns, teachers should just focus on education. Not only does it create a huge responsibility, there would also need to be a large financial investment to supply guns for every school. This money would be hard to come up with, and not everyone is in favor of sacrificing money for firearms.
... a high school student, I don’t take much stock in the safety codes and drills in place to keep students safe in the event of a shooting. I would feel much safer knowing my teacher has the ability to protect the class, rather than hide and lock the door. An educator is responsible for the students in their class. They are responsible for their education and their safety while the children are in their classroom. The safety of fifteen or more students would be much more easily secured by one person if that person was armed. Promoting teachers to arm themselves also prevents school shootings; criminals don’t attack a victim that can fight back. At least 60% of school attacks would be prevented with an armed faculty warning sign. School faculty members should be armed to secure the safety of the countries students, and in hand prevent the majority of potential shootings.
School shootings are still happening and we have to put a stop to it. We need to have these teachers prepared and ready to fight. Students to deserve to have their lives out to rest knowing something could have been done that’s why we need to have these teachers armed. This is a cold world if someone enters a school with a weapon teachers need to have their weapon ready too for the sack of their children. A school is a fun place to learn but to also keep safe. This is why teachers should be armed.
School shootings have the ability to be stopped. They are largely one of the worst repeated tragedies our great nation has endured, and they should be stopped today! No terrorist wants to go out in his/her infamous blaze of “glory” by failing in their attempt. Arming educators has the capability to end school shootings in this decade. “And I haven’t even touched upon the pure deterrent effect of a potential mass murderer having to worry one of his targets might be armed” (Concealed Weapons). This quote presents the very real possibility that just if teachers are armed, future shooters will reconsider and possibly not attempt it at all. Providing this overwhelming deterrent in the foremost thoughts of a would be murderer emphasizes the positive effect concealed weapons operated by teachers could
There's a problem in America. Children, defenseless are being shot one by one. They go to their school and the schools are a gun free zone. The shooters take advantage of it and take the children's lives. Teachers should be able to carry a handgun to protect their children. This is very important, to all teachers and students for their safety. Shooters wouldn't come in the school knowing that the teacher had a gun. Students would feel way safer. There would be a lot of safety that would go into this.there are a lot of facts that can help us make the decision.
School shootings have gotten to the point where parents are afraid to send their own children to school. School should be a place where parents, children and faculty feel safe, wouldn’t you want to be safe somewhere that you attend every single day? After many school shootings throughout the nation, schools have changed the ways of not only the government and schools districts but of concerned citizens as well. The one real question that we have to ask is how many more of these and how many more deaths need to happen for real action to take place? This was answered after the Sandy Hook shooting. Government officials, school administrations and even the president himself are trying their hardest to prevent these from occurring. Schools throughout the nation have changed their procedures, security and have caused domino effects on many things.
With all of the school shootings that have happened lately I’m sure that most parents would want their child protected at any cost. As of January 2014, there had been an average of one school shooting every other school day. What are the schools doing to protect our kids when they are away from us at school? What more can be done to protect them? We are not able to be with our kids while they are at school, but we surely want to know that if a gunman does try to enter the school, there are measures in place to protect them. Should teachers be allowed to carry a handgun while in class? In my position argument I will discuss reasons that I feel that teachers should be able to carry while in class.
On the side if teachers were to carry guns students and parents may be more scared. “When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in”(Corbett huffington post). “Kids get their hands on guns, and they know how to use them”( Corbett huffington post). “I have a patient who recalls his silent car rides with his father who kept two guns under the driver’s seat. Silently the boy watched, on guard, even though nothing ever happened. But then again nothing was ever
This sounds dangerous, having guns in schools, but it actually provides more security. Most SRO’s have guns, which they are trained to use. Kenneth S. Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services, says, “School districts considering arming teachers and school staff with guns would take on significant responsibility and potential liabilities that I firmly believe are beyond the expertise, knowledge-base, experience, and professional capabilities of most school boards and administrators” (Arming Teachers and School Staff- School Security”). Trump does not believe that teachers should be allowed to arm guns inside the school because of a liability issue. Nonetheless, most houses have guns in them, but when they are put up in a safe, or somewhere children cannot get to, the house is still a safe place. Therefore, if the school did allow the teachers to obtain a gun somewhere in the classroom, intruders would be less likely to show up because they know it is the whole school against the single, or few intruders. Teachers will only be allowed to be armed at school if they have a concealed weapons permit, CWP, and are thoroughly trained on how to use a gun. Teachers will be required to go through a drill once a month on how they should hand the situation if an intruder were to come into the building, as well as how they should handle a gun and when they should use the gun. Due to only
Gun violence in schools is a very serious problem in America. More and more shootings are occurring, and no matter what has been done to try to prevent these shootings they still occur. The current methods being utilized to prevent gun violence in schools are not very successful, because school shootings are still occurring. To better prevent gun violence in schools and in general the United States must reinforce gun knowledge, security, and the laws that are already in place.
I believe that we can do something about this, but in the current state, I believe students are not safe at school. On Wednesday February 14, 2018 a student at Parkland high school in Florida killed seventeen people and injured others. This shocked the nation, and really made a push for more security in school, and more control on the purchase of guns. After all, the shooter suffered from mental illness and was visited by the police on several occasions, but yet he was able to purchase an assault rifle.
Increasing the amount of school resource officers with the intention of protecting both the students and staff from acts of extreme violence is a genuine proposal that has a great promise to save lives. Allowing teachers to carry licensed guns to school, however, is not as easy to understand. If teachers are able to carry firearms to school, the students might be distracted or nervous that there is always a gun in their classroom. Especially if the guns are to be carried by the teachers on their person, it could be intimidating to the students and the teachers could lose their sense of relatability. If the movements to increase the amount of police officers in schools are passed, permitting other staff members to carry licensed weapons might be
The Change We Need Tragic events of school shootings and irresponsible safety precautions have been prominent in today’s society. People are not taking the right measures to make sure students and faculty are safe at all times. Due to recent unfortunate events, more safety is needed in schools to better save the lives of students and faculty. Ways to assist in keeping schools districts safe are; gun control, security on school property, and transportation safety.
