When you go to school for the day, do you feel safe? “Due to ongoing school safety issues around the country, there has been considerable debate over precautions needed to keep students and staff safe during the academic day”. Should that be with stricter gun laws? FBI involvement? Mental health reform? Or stronger school safeguards? In 2015, the average number of shootings per week, on average, on a school campus was 1 (Jill Berkowicz). In order to change what is happening in our schools we need to change the people, not the weapons. We do not need stricter gun laws, we need to help those people who think it is right to go and shoot at innocent children. 73% of school shooters had no prior criminal record, not even an arrest (Jill Berkowicz). …show more content…

“They were not allowed at his speech to the National Rifle Association (NRA). Nor were they allowed at most of his hotels, golf courses, and other properties”. But he wants them to be allowed at our schools, and many agree with him. Would our schools really be safer if firearms were allowed in our classroom? The answer should be no. Kids get their hands on anything they can grab, whether it is food or a phone. So why would they not get their hands on a gun? “According to FBI homicide data, of the 1,448 children who died as a result of gun violence in 2010, 165 of those deaths were at the hands of other children” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). Yes, trained teachers would keep firearms out of reach, but having them available in the classroom increases the chances of something to go wrong. “Having guns within reach of children is an invitation for them to use them” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). We should be doing everything to keep guns out of our school. We all love our teachers dearly, but I would not want them to risk their lives in front of a gun. “Just because you can help a student read and write, doesn’t mean you’re good in a gunfight” (Allowing Guns in Schools is a Bad Idea). In Document C, it is stated that “School Safety: A Shared Responsibility”.
