In the past year alone, over 10,000 innocent lives were taken by others. [Thesis] Every shooting case has obvious signs such as racist ideals, and violent pasts that the public must be educated upon in order to save the lives of others before they are taken. [Statement of Facts] The Gun Violence Archive defines violence committed with the use of a gun as gun violence. When collecting statistics, the combined total includes self-defense, murders or whatever resulted in a gun being fired. In other words, there is no separation between noncriminal violence, attempted suicide, assault or unintentional injuries. Gun violence can be caused by a wide variety of factors. In current society, we typically find that racism and past violent encounters play a major role in the motivation of these horrific acts. Jim Rassol, author of “The Florida Airport Gunman Shows How Domestic Violence Predicts Mass Killing” focuses on the life story of Esteban Santiago, Fort Lauderdale airport shooter. Prior to executing his plan at the airport, Esteban had approximately 5 confrontations with Alaskan police. 2 of those confrontations led to police discovering he was engaged in a case of strangulation to another human, but the police never took it serious, letting him off the hook. What is gun violence? Gun Violence is any crime that has been committed with the use of a gun. What are some of the causes of gun violence? Gun violence in youth can be attributed to many different influences. According to an NBC News study “7,000 children are injured severely enough by gun violence to be sent to the hospital and 3,000 children are injured so badly that they do not even make it to the hospital. This means that every year about 10,000 children are involved in gun related violence each year.” (Carroll, 2014) What this means is that youth gun violence is way too high. Although in the U.S. we are not able to purchase a gun until we are 18 somehow we are seeing kids under the age of 18 getting their hands on guns and shooting and killing their siblings or parents or fellow students at their school.

More than 20,000 children and youth under the age of 20 years old are injured or killed by guns in the U.S. The easy accesses kids have to getting their hands on guns are a major reason why firearms are the second leading cause of death among the youth. The majority of deaths by guns in the youth are homicides. About one-third of them are suicides. Seven percent are unintentional. People living in urban areas such as, older teens, males, African American youth, and Hispanic youth are more likely to be involved in gun homicides. People in rural areas like males and Caucasian youth are more likely to commit suicide. There were 2,711 infant, child, and teen firearm deaths. That’s seven deaths a day.
Eighty-nine people die from gun violence in the United States every day according to the Brady Campaign , from school children to victims of domestic violence to people going about their daily lives. As we mourn the lives of those killed in incidents of gun violence across the country, we need to take action. Today in this day and age the world is filled with hate and violence and other terrible things. People use weapons and other objects to cause terror on others for many reasons such as power and wealth. Firearms are one of the weapons someone may use to harm or rule over others because of the danger the weapon can cause. Violence related to guns is a prominent issue in America. Guns are a means to an end; meaning guns have played a strong role in suicides, murders, and injuries. In the past decade there has been an average of 400-500 thousand incidents of firearms per year (Gun Violence). The number of injured people from firearm incidents in the United States per year for the past decade is 400-600 thousand people (Gun Violence). These statistics are absolutely shocking to anyone. The amount of violence and crime that comes from guns is enormous. It is imperative that proper gun control is put into place by means of background checks and proper training. It can almost be certain that the number of incidents of accidental discharges from children and the number of victims affected by gun crimes in general can be highly reduced.
Why do people resort to gun violence? This question has taken off in recent years, especially following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in December, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary. It’s hard to say why exactly people resort to gun violence mainly because most shooters are usually killed by themselves or they are shot by police officers at the scene of the crime so we don’t have a chance to question them and figure out what they were actually thinking. Shooters that we are able to capture and question are usually so mentally gone that it’s hard to figure out what exactly they were thinking. There are a plethora of likely causes for school shootings, some more plausible than others. People believe that anything from video games to mental disorders to bullying to attention, and many others, could be the main reason for why people decide to shoot up schools. You can’t point to one thing and decide that is why the shooter attacked, it will usually be several factors that affect the shooter that they end up breaking down and think gun violence is perfectly fine.
