[Exordium] 27 shot in Sandy Hook Elementary. 9 dead in Church shooting in South Carolina. 11 people shot in Fort Lauderdale airport massacre. People often resolve conflicts through the use of guns. In the past year alone, over 10,000 innocent lives were taken by others. [Thesis] Every shooting case has obvious signs such as racist ideals, and violent pasts that the public must be educated upon in order to save the lives of others before they are taken. [Statement of Facts] The Gun Violence Archive defines violence committed with the use of a gun as gun violence. When collecting statistics, the combined total includes self-defense, murders or whatever resulted in a gun being fired. In other words, there is no separation between noncriminal violence, attempted suicide, assault or unintentional injuries. Gun violence can be caused by a wide variety of factors. In current society, we typically find that racism and past violent encounters play a major role in the motivation of these horrific acts. Many have had numerous confrontations with the police. Jim Rassol, author of “The Florida Airport Gunman Shows How Domestic Violence Predicts Mass Killing” focuses on the life story of Esteban Santiago, Fort Lauderdale airport shooter. Prior to executing his plan at the airport, Esteban had approximately 5 confrontations with Alaskan police. 2 of those confrontations led to police discovering he was engaged in a case of strangulation to another human, but the police never took it serious, letting him off the hook.
