Children and teens have had lasting effects from gun violence. Thousands die every day from suicide, gang violence, and drive by shootings and accidental shootings. This problem can be solved by educating kids on gun violence, educating youth about positive behaviors and self-esteem, and parents/guardians could avoid associating with violent people, like those known to have affiliations with gangs or those known to have a criminal background.
“Studies have shown that more than 90% of teenagers who try to take their life have a mental health problem such as depression, manic depression, schizophrenia, or severe behavioral or substance abuse problems” (Magdalena Szumilas, and Stanley P. Kutcher, 2008). Each year, almost a hundred of thousands of children and teens are harmed by gun violence in the United States (The Future of Children, 2002).

One advantage is children are more knowledgeable on the subject and it keeps them physically safe. Children then will know not only what gun violence is, but how to stay away from it, and how better to protect themselves. There is an EKG program; it stands for Educating Kids about Gun Violence. It effects teens and children’s lives, making them aware of and educates them on gun violence. The program involves numerous cases and scenarios and urges discussion of the cost gun violence and help students create safe choices of conflict resolution (Pei-Yuan (Pearl) Tsou, MD, Michelle Barnes 2016). However, some parents don’t want their child learning about guns or gun safety. The parents would rather their children be fully sheltered by the topic. In this case the parents believe sheltering their children protects them more than informing them. Even though some children aren’t allowed to learn about gun safety, educating kids on gun violence encourages teens and children to learn the effects of gun violence and gives them knowledge to keep them
Gun violence in youth has become much more prevalent. Today’s youth are more likely to turn to guns to solve their problems with bullies or to help them to fight a mental illness. Kids are taking guns from their parents or are just going to the streets and buying the guns from random people. Although there are jurisdictions that have started to use gun violence programs to help combat these issues the programs are not found everywhere and are not going to work forever. One such program that we will learn about later on is Operation Ceasefire.
Imagine, a person is sitting in their classroom in college. He or she is focused on listening to the teacher, because he or she needs to pass the final exam in order to graduate. All of a sudden, an intruder charges through the door. The intruder pulls out a gun and starts blasting bullets throughout the classroom. There is nowhere to run and there is no way to fight back. Everyone is hit and on the floor, bleeding. This person is so close to graduating and starting a new life. Now his life has been cut short, because there was someone who illegally brought a gun to a school. Because the school had a symbol of “no guns allowed”. Because the intruder knew there was no one else could shoot back. Now imagine if that student, dying on the floor,
Violence related to guns is a prominent issue in America. Guns are a means to an end; meaning guns have played a strong role in suicides, murders, and injuries. In the past decade there has been an average of 400-500 thousand incidents of firearms per year (Gun Violence). The number of injured people from firearm incidents in the United States per year for the past decade is 400-600 thousand people (Gun Violence). These statistics are absolutely shocking to anyone. The amount of violence and crime that comes from guns is enormous. It is imperative that proper gun control is put into place by means of background checks and proper training. It can almost be certain that the number of incidents of accidental discharges from children and the number of victims affected by gun crimes in general can be highly reduced.
Although no one can be entirely sure what motivates teens to commit mass shootings, there are theories that must be examined to develop solutions. One theory states that there are ten factors that contribute to the likelihood of a teen committing murder. These factors include an unstable home life, being bullied at school, obsession with violent entertainment, being suicidal, involvement with drugs or alcohol, involvement with gangs or cults, and mental illness. Usually at least four of these qualities are present in homicidal teens (Khadaroo). While many of these causes stem from home lif...
Through two decades ago and in recent years gun violence has increased significantly in the various parts of the United States. There are more cases of children and young adults, engaging in violence. Gun violence leads to the death of many civilians annually. Gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt to commit crimes. put children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affect communities of color. Gun violence harmed all the society and it was a nightmare which produced a culture soaked in blood.
Violence in the United States is a major problem, but our politicians only want to focus on gun violence, and some of them believe the solution to ending gun violence is by preventing law abiding citizens from exercising their second amendment rights. Guns are easier to commit a crime with than other weapons, or without a weapon at all, but with an estimated 270 million guns the hands of citizens (11 facts), if they were the problem we would know it by now. It is undeniable that guns are responsible for a high amount of crime, but we already have tens of thousands of gun laws in the United States (How many gun laws are there?), that haven’t been able to curb gun violence. If the current laws were working, then maybe there would be a reasonable
More than 20,000 children and youth under the age of 20 years old are injured or killed by guns in the U.S. The easy accesses kids have to getting their hands on guns are a major reason why firearms are the second leading cause of death among the youth. The majority of deaths by guns in the youth are homicides. About one-third of them are suicides. Seven percent are unintentional. People living in urban areas such as, older teens, males, African American youth, and Hispanic youth are more likely to be involved in gun homicides. People in rural areas like males and Caucasian youth are more likely to commit suicide. There were 2,711 infant, child, and teen firearm deaths. That’s seven deaths a day.
Gun control is a highly controversial topic in today’s world where the fight is between the liberal and the conservatives. Many people believe that guns should be banned due to many recent massacres that have happened whereas others are wanting people to have background checks done before owning a gun. I am against gun control because banning handguns in the United States should not be allowed because handguns fail to protect the people and it is ineffective.
Gun control is an awfully big issue in the United States today. Many people in America don’t agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns and freedom away from law-abiding citizens. Many citizens have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns aren’t very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection when used correctly. The second amendment states “the right to bear arms”; does this grant everyone the right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for the good guy average Joe to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea, and are taking part in the loss of our freedom that was given to us.
... will have no reason to want to harm others or themselves. If only the world were better to cut down on crime, theft and shootings. What a world that would be. Schools making programs to help cut down on crime is really smart. Teaching the students how to deal with their feelings and the dangers of firearms can hopefully cut down the crime of students.
In 2016, the data base procon.org published an article that explains both, the pros and cons of gun control. The article titled “Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?” was written by Glenn Beck, Tavis Smiley, Mark Bittman, Newt Gingrich, Condoleezza Rice, and Joseph Stiglitz. The media is constantly blaming violence that occurs in the streets straight to modern sporting rifles and pistols, or any gun that is not seen to be related to the sport of hunting. However, the Second Amendment was not created by our founding fathers to just protect hunting rifles, but to protect “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” which includes the modern sporting rifle and pistol.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about gun control. In fact it is one of the most hotly debated topics in our society today, but one thing that most people can agree on is background check for the purchase of firearms. But there are a lot of hurdles for a background check system, a lot of things to consider and a lot of problem with how it is set up today. Another battleground for the debate surrounding the misguidedly named “Gun Show Loophole.”
Handguns can be easily concealed, so they are the weapon of choice for people who choose to use them for self-defense. Unfortunately, they are also the weapon of choice for criminals. Since handguns are easy for criminals to steal, handguns are readily available on the black market; this makes handguns an attractive choice for criminals. The majority of crimes involving firearms are committed with the use of a handgun; this is a serious problem in America today. Although most would agree that something must be done, no one seems to have the answer at this point. Some gun control supporters believe that completely banning handguns is the best way to protect citizens. However, banning handguns fails to protect
Guns and Violence “One man with a gun can control a hundred without one” (Vladimir Lenin). It is not surprising to feel unsafe at times, but is it right to murder the threat? Ongoing crimes in America have raised a question to many families about owning a gun for their family’s safety and self-defense. “A December 1993 Gallup poll indicated that 49% of U.S households contained a gun, and 31% of the U.S adults personally owned a gun” (Kleck, 1). The majority of people gave a primary reason of self-defense for keeping these firearms.
Have you ever wondered whether or not gun safety would be useful? There are many opinions the usefulness of gun safety, we are going through this issue right here in Kansas with our concealed carry law going into effect on July 1 2015. According to At Issue a reference database online through usd261 states that gun safety seeks to eliminate or minimize death or injury from guns. While some group’s state education is the key to gun safety, opposition state that children should not even be around guns at all. This paper will examine the pro, con, and my viewpoint on whether or not people should learn gun safety.
