In 2016, the data base procon.org published an article that explains both, the pros and cons of gun control. The article titled “Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?” was written by Glenn Beck, Tavis Smiley, Mark Bittman, Newt Gingrich, Condoleezza Rice, and Joseph Stiglitz. The media is constantly blaming violence that occurs in the streets straight to modern sporting rifles and pistols, or any gun that is not seen to be related to the sport of hunting. However, the Second Amendment was not created by our founding fathers to just protect hunting rifles, but to protect “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” which includes the modern sporting rifle and pistol.

In fact 90% of adults that own a gun support laws preventing the mentally ill from purchasing guns. A member of Hunters against Gun Violence, stated “As a hunter and someone who has owned guns since I was a young boy, I believe that commonsense gun legislations makes us all safer. Background checks prevent criminals and other dangerous people from getting guns.” This statement shows that some hunters are wanting limitations on who can own a gun.
The presence of a gun often makes a conflict turn violent. These conflicts such as brawls fueled by alcohol or drugs, and arguments over money make up almost 60% of the total gun related deaths in 2013. Also, armed civilians are unlikely to stop crimes and can even make the situations even more deadly. There were 62 mass shooting between 1982 and 2012 and not of them were stopped by an armed civilian. Today there are weapons that can fire for minutes without reloading and accessories that can let a shooter go unnoticed and unheard. A citizen can get access to folding and detaching stocks that allow them to conceal the weapon easier and even grenade launcher attachments. Jonathan Lowy, Director of Legal Action Project, stated, “These are weapons that will shred your venison before you eat it, or go through the walls of your apartment.”
However, gun ownership is an American tradition that is older than the country itself. Creating more gun control laws would infringe upon the right to bear arms which is protected by the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms, even a firearm that is unconnected with service in a militia, and to use the firearm for lawful purposes, such as self-defense.
