Due to recent shootings in four cities gun control legislation has become a big issue throughout the United States. Government officials have presented legislation for gun control to help reduce mass shootings; however, even with these suggestions for strict gun control twelve states have already passed laws that offer fewer limitations for gun possession. After the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, Connecticut passed a law to ban gun sales that hold large amounts of ammunition. According to McLeod “in Newtown, Connecticut, the families of ten out of twenty children killed in a December 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School have sued a North Carolina-based gun manufacturer, alleging Remington Outdoor Co.’s Bushmaster …show more content…
Sources from both CQ Researcher and Opposing Viewpoints inform the reader reasons why citizens think gun legislation should be active, what has been attempted, and what should be done without conflicting with the second amendment. The sources from EBSCO Academic Search and National Newspaper Core offers insight on how mass shootings reignite the gun legislation debate once again. Readers would find these sources very useful and informative. The authors do not offer a bias opinion; however, they do offer insights on both pros and cons to gun control. The article that stood out to me the most was in CQ Researcher when Ethan McLeod explained that since Barack Obama became president there has been fourteen mass shootings throughout the United States which is mainly why gun control still remains an issue till this …show more content…
With that said we should find ways to limit the wrong people from obtaining weapons to do these citizens should have to participate in a background and medical history check. Many people that are involved in mass shootings usually have a history of mental illness and sometimes the signs can be bright as day. If many people continue to remain vigilant and aware of signs of mental illness perhaps these incidents can be prevented. American citizens should also have to participate in a gun safety class along with their first purchase of a firearm. For citizens who disagree with owning a firearm, gun safety announcements should be spoken at jobs, churches, and schools in case a mass shooting situation were to ever occur. These suggestions could help save lives by showing citizens how to indicate when their lives are in danger and how to handle the situation when it
Tragedy after tragedy, people find themselves mourning over the lives lost. And over and over again, they look back to see how they could have prevented it. People continue to argue and constantly debate what actions should be taken, and while doing so, more and more people lose their lives at the hands of gun violence. It’s clear to see that not much has been done to keep these weapons out of the wrongs hands: the shootings at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech have shown that. What would happen if there were to be another devastating shooting to occur? How would people react? Or would they just argue some more, while the wrong people can still easily get a hold of guns? The only way they can ever gain control of anything is by controlling the source of the problem, where people are able to freely purchase guns without restrictions. In order to reduce gun-related crime, unlicensed gun sellers should be required to run background checks on their customers.
Gun control is a very controversial subject now days in politics. My personal view on gun control is that it will never work. I'm am just fore warning you that this paper may be a little bias, but I'll try to give views from both sides.
Concealed carry can help minimize this, because of the requirements that must be followed, and the training that must be completed. Little do people realize, that more than 80% of these mass shootings which are taking place, involved illegally obtained weapons (msnbc). Which means that the shooter does not have any training, and they are planning to cause harm with them.

I hope after you have read this you will be more educated, and can pick your side of the gun control debate. So keep reading and find out more about the gun control laws that the federal and some state governments want to enforce on U.S. Citizens.
Is it any coincidence that the states with the loosest gun laws in America tend to contribute to the highest amount of national gun deaths and injuries? This is one of the main questions we should be asking when deciding what is best for our country and its citizens. Although gun control has been an ongoing issue, certain events like the Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the Aurora, Colorado mass shootings have increased our attention to this topic. Although I believe that Americans possess the right to own a firearm, I believe there should be detailed screening and control systems to keep guns out of the wrong hands, to prevent more gun violence from happening in the future.
Comparing the United States’ homicidal statistics to England and Wales’, I’ve been moderately persuaded towards the opponent’s side of gun control. It’s difficult to dictate what’s morally acceptable in today’s society with the increasing amounts of controversy, but noticing the dramatic increases in crime rate due to the lack in supply of guns, versus the dramatic decreases in crime rate because of an increase in the supply of guns, definitely proves the consequences of gun control to a certain degree. I would also have to agree that ridding the public from their firearms does take away the privilege of defending ourselves from any sort of crime. With the given results, knowing that our American citizens defend themselves from
Imagine being forced to crawl and hide with gunshots near your ears. Imagine seeing people shot to death in front of you. Believe it or not, scenes like these occur on a daily basis in America. In the first 320 days of this year there were 325 mass shootings in the nation, defined as where there were more than four victims at each shooting. (Mass Shooting Tracker). This egregious level of violence is unacceptable in a developed country and major reform in gun legislation to improve the tragic state of public safety in the United States today. Although critics of expanded gun legislation incorrectly argue that easier access to guns increases safety and that gun laws are unconstitutional, it is imperative that America adopts stronger gun control legislation because heightened regulations reduce crime rates and have successfully improved public safety in other developed countries. In a country like the United States, no one
Following the mass shooting of 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, many states have moved to tighten their gun laws, especially to restrict the illegitimate use of firearms, as well as the possession of firearms by high-risk populations that include persons with mental health issues, children, felons, and substance abusers. Some of the states that have tightened their gun control laws following the highly publicized Sandy Hook mass shooting and other similar incidences in the past include:
America has a massive gun problem, and lives are lost everyday because of it. Stricter gun control laws would reduce gun deaths. Firearms are the leading implement used in homicides and less access to guns would help lower this statistic. Massacres can and would be reduced as well. Guns cannot safely be used as a means of self defense either, and bringing a gun into any situation turns it into a life or death scenario. If a gun is locked in a safe then it is not useful, and if it is not in the safe then it is not safe (Jefferies). Criminals also have easy access to guns, easier than any regulated country (Jefferies). Stricter gun laws and background checks would help catch criminals and stop them getting guns (Jefferies). More gun control is
Gun control will not prevent mass shootings. After the Sandy Hook incident in December 2012, supporters of gun control argued that it could have been prevented. That is not true, though. None of topics discussed in gun control debates would
Mass shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States society and have brought our society's safety debate to the attention of American politics. Both sides of the debate agree that we need more safety precautions but neither side can officially agree on what is to be done. What can we do about the raging number of mass shootings? There is no definite solution for mass shootings but there are precautions the United States can take to try to overcome the overwhelming number of mass shootings occurring. Gun Control is a major topic in the debate of how we can keep our society safer but how is what remains a mystery but we can start with altering the second amendment, and having stronger gun laws and background checks.
I believe that there are a few solutions that can be used to solve this problem at both a community and national level. The first course of action is to establish a national system for registering guns and ammunition. Anyone can obtain a gun by going to a state with less restrictive laws or by getting a friend who lives in the state to buy the guns for them. A national system would prevent this by scaring those "friends" into not buying the guns legally and selling them illegally, for if the guns are used in an illegal crime, that person can be held accountable. Secondly, a national system would be more helpful in tracking crimes after they have happened, to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Eighty-nine people die from gun violence in the United States every day according to the Brady Campaign , from school children to victims of domestic violence to people going about their daily lives. As we mourn the lives of those killed in incidents of gun violence across the country, we need to take action. We should all do everything in our power to keep tragedies like this from happening again. When it comes to addressing mass shootings, we need new answers
The debate over gun control in America has constantly been brought up over the years due to gunmen killing large amounts of people in shootings. From Columbine to Sandy Hook, or the shootings of the two reporters in West Virginia, these public shootings are occurring everywhere. Lawmakers and civilians alike are pushing for increased gun control in hopes of preventing the same tragedies. Anyone that has been affected by the shootings has been pushing Congress and state governments to force new sanctions on the government. Over the past three years, Congress has shot down all the laws despite the large amounts of public support.
The United States is one of the only countries with the continuing problem of mass murder. 58 people lost their lives and more than 50 were injured when a man opened fire at an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas on October 1st, 2017 (Hanley 6). This is one of countless massacres that have occurred in the United States. It is no surprise when one turns the TV on in the morning and a “News Flash” story pops up on the latest shooting. Gregory Kate of USA Today states that there has been greater than 200 events of mass murder in the past 10 years. It is no secret that guns are an easily accessible weapon in the United States, and in numerous other countries that is not the case. Most people can obtain a firearm with a simple, online background check on a computer. Within minutes the check is completed. Kate states the only people to be declined would be: "felons, fugitives, drug addicts, the mentally ill, illegal immigrants, some legal immigrants, people
