Mass Shooting In American Culture

An unfortunate normality in modern American culture is mass shootings. When I first heard about the tragic shooting in Miami, Florida a few months ago, I was devastated to hear the news, but I was not surprised. It seems as if these mass shootings are ticking time bombs of inevitably.
I remember when I was first old enough to comprehend the severity of these killings. I was about thirteen or fourteen years old in school when there was a mass shooting in Newton, Connecticut. The shooting occurred just a couple of days before Christmas at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This moment truly resonated with me because I noticed all of the adults around me. They were staring at the television screens with a familiar expression of empathy, as they had

seen horror like this before. It is heartbreaking how much unnecessary violence occurs in our country.
Now, I am by no means trying to threaten your second amendment rights. I am not “anti-gun.” I am, however, anti-gun violence. This has happened far too many times, and I’m baffled that an organization that is supposedly advocating for gun rights would not make more of an effort to ensure that gun owners are competent. Sure, guns don’t kill people. People kill people. However, states with higher gun ownership rates tend to also have higher gun death rates, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
I will concede that part of the issue is current gun laws are not being enforced effectively. Why is it that you can’t support common sense measures, such as closing the gun show loophole, to ensure that every gun purchaser goes through a background check? Why is that you cannot support a waiting period to determine that the buyer is mentally competent as a gun owner? Why is it that you can’t support the assault weapons ban to make sure that military grade weapons are not purchased by ordinary members of the public? While I commend you for the procedures you take to ensure that people are knowledgeable about firearm safety and for not standing in the way of background checks I do believe that we could do more.
As I conclude this letter, I say firmly please don’t make us wait until the next tragedy to bring into effect measures that could help reduce gun brutality now. You are one of the most powerful political organizations in our nation and think about how you could use that power to bring about meaningful change to address this gun violence epidemic.
