I viewed all four video clips but the one I chose to do my discussion on is video clip #3. The third video clip is an individual counseling session and this week is for group counseling. The counselor in this video begin to discuss the topic on algebra grade in a gentle way without demanding him to go home and study for his Algebra test. The two skills that I observe in this video was active listening and restating and this lead the student to feel comfortable because the counsel is actively listening to him even when he made the comment about studying 20 minutes to just pass the algebra test. Active Listening help to encourage a person to try harder and the restating can determine the counselor understood correctly the teenager statement.
Peer tutors are put in leadership positions that oftentimes prepares them for life after their educational experience. Additionally, peer tutors lead their tutees to utilize cognitive thinking skills. Finally, peer tutors assist tutees in development (pg. 4). Lipsky cited Arthur Chickering’s seven vectors of development (pg. 4). Each vector highlights areas of effective social, intellectual or personal development (pg. 4-5). She stated, “As a framework explaining college students’ evolving behaviors and attitudes, Chickering’s model is useful in your peer educator role. Note that the seven vectors overlap and are not linear in nature” (pg. 4).
I thought this video was going to be very difficult, though we have been practicing it all semester. Once my partner and I got together to do this project I became more comfortable. I went over my weaknesses and my strengths on the previous group sessions and figured out what I need to work on and what I do well at.
“The Broken Escalator” video teaches us if we get stuck on something to not just sit there, that we can move on to something else and not just wait until it comes to you. It also teaches us that if we fall behind, we can take a few steps everyday to get back up with the rest of the class again, and be on the same level. “The Marshmallow Test” video teaches us that if we are patient and listen to the instructions that were given to us, we will be rewarded and succeed, and move further along/ahead
The two videos that I like the most from this class was the ted talk name “America’s native prisoners of war” by Aaron Huey, and the documentary “When Your Hands are tied” by Mia Boccella and Marley Shebala. These two videos brought my attention because in the first video which is the ted talk the author of the video is an outsider of the society that he is trying to represent he did not go through the experience that the native people that he is trying to defend went through. In the documentary when your hands are tied this is a little bit more personal I think because this is a documentary where people from the tribe and people that went through all this obstacles are trying to heal themselves.
Every video I watched displayed tools that I could use in my own classroom. The instructional strategies and models used in the classrooms were great. My current teaching philosophy about instructional strategies and models would be that they are great to use. As a teacher, looking for ways to help teach certain lessons is a must. Every teacher found different ways to teach the materials to their students. It is always great to have resources in the classroom to look back on. Students love to have resources to guide them. In the video (Case #1112), I would emulate their strategy by letting my students use a textbook. I feel that textbooks are reliable sources and can be used to validate certain materials. In the video, you can tell that the students were using the textbook as a tool to prove their discussion with each other. In the video (Case #876), I would avoid assessing my students in whole-group discussion. I would have my student in groups to see how they communicate with each t=other about our discussion. Seeing my students evaluating each other’s opinions would be a great way into assessing their knowledge about the lesson. A classroom environment I would like to teach in would be with students who are ready to ask questions. Students who are not afraid to express their thoughts about the instruction. It would be easier for me to assess my students if that were

When students are struggling academically and getting the tutoring they need their confidence boosted and they don't feel as overwhelmed. Confident learners tend to speak more and know how to get their point across. For those students who aren’t so confident, learning new material

I believe that everyone should reflect on what they do to find ways to improve it. I learned a lot from taping this lesson that will help me in the future. I will always continue to praise all students on their work. I will always encourage students to ask questions if they do not understand something or how it is done. I enjoy the use of peer helpers when they are available because it gives the student a chance to help demonstrate their knowledge when helping another student. I believe in getting feedback from students at the end of any lesson to assess their learned knowledge. Also, it allows me to know who and what areas I need to focus more attend on to improve the knowledge and skills. I believe that increasing students’ knowledge is the purpose of teaching.
The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
The focus of the study was how to input and edit videos. In the session, we edited one video together, he showed us how to make a video flow smother and how to fade words in and out of the video. I like this session because I learned a little more than I already knew. In the session, I learned how to put to videos over each other and how to make the sounds fade. I would recommend people who would like to learn to edit videos to attend this
My experience as the facilitator was at first never racking and hard to deal with. Therefore, my underlying goal was to focus on the here and now and how I would be able to utilize what I have learned in class. When we recorded the video in our class with Brittney we talk about the circle of casualty. In other words I was able to properly identify the patterns in her behavior when communicating with her husband, and how both fall into the same patterns and caused there to be and endless circle. Furthermore, I was able to use some of the language we talk about in class. For example “What I am picking up on is? “, “Is that correct?” and so for. By doing this she was able to provide me with a more in depth response to her conflicts.
Overall, this lesson mostly was based on the teaching of productive skills. In my opinion, teachers need to focus on productive skills more than receptive skills because students learn better when they produce language. I learned so much about teaching. It is our duties as teachers to find not only what motivates students to learn but also what motivates them not to misbehave. If we can meet them at that point and take away that motivation, we can go a long way towards a more effective classroom and learning experience.

Dwight and I sat down to review the video, we both noticed a few places where I could work on to improve my teaching. During the start of the lesson, writing out the learning targets out for students to see and read is important. It allows the student to be able to put the learning target into their own ‘kid-friendly’ terms and restate it to show their own thinking. Also, I had fifteen vocabulary words and throughout the video we noticed that a few of the vocabulary words could have been omitted. She also recommended to have visuals or pictures to go along with the vocabulary to help students understand this. She also said have vocabulary in sentence strips can be beneficial as well, especially for English Language
