Student Success Series The three student success series I attended were study aid, video editing with Photoshop, and find free money for college. I selected each workshop for a different reason. I choose study aid because it was required but it helped. I choose Photoshop because I started a YouTube channel and needed to learn how to edit videos better, I choose find free money for college because I need more money to pay for college so I want have to take out loans. There is no similar theme. I learned that there are scholarships that people sometimes don’t apply for and that there are many ways to study. One of the sessions I went to was study aid and the presenter was Dhanijsha. The focus of the session was different and easier ways to study. In the study aid session, the lady gave a packet that has the different type of ways to study. She also pulled up a PowerPoint slide and then she talked about each one. I like the presentation because she taught me more ways to prepare for test and easier ways to study. Out of all the ways she told us I think I like the concept cards the best. In this session is very helpful for people that have a hard time study so I would share this session with others. …show more content…
The second session I went to was video editing with Photoshop and I don’t remember who the presenter was.
The focus of the study was how to input and edit videos. In the session, we edited one video together, he showed us how to make a video flow smother and how to fade words in and out of the video. I like this session because I learned a little more than I already knew. In the session, I learned how to put to videos over each other and how to make the sounds fade. I would recommend people who would like to learn to edit videos to attend this
session. The last workshop I went to was the find free money for college session and I don’t remember the presenter name. The focus of the session was how to make college more affordable. The lady was telling us that there are many scholarship opportunities out there and that we just must find them. She gave us different websites to visit to search for scholarship and she even said the school has many scholarships. There even some that some people don’t even apply for and some based-on majors. She also stated that there are many easy scholarships that require no easy and all you do is apply for it. I learned that if you applying for a scholarship and must write an essay that the financial aid staff would read over your essay for you and let you know if there are any changes that need to be made. I would highly recommend others to attend this session and just for attended you are enter in a raffle and the raffle is out of everybody that attend that session which in my case was 10 – 15 people. In at the end of the session she pulls a raffle ticket and if your number is called you get a 100 dollar book scholarship. Overall I enjoyed all the student success series that I attended and for incoming freshmen these workshops are very helpful because freshman don’t know very much about the school or what to expect. I recommend that future freshman to take advantage of all the opportunities giving to them and pay attention throughout FYE. I recommend the university to make these workshops more known and send weekly or monthly emails about all the sessions that are available on campus.
I am thankful that I had this experience. What I found in watching the video, was that I need to work on my speaking ability. Fewer giggles, an increased grasp of words, and working on leading students to correct answers through asking the right questions. My strengths included beginning the session by introducing ourselves to each other and creating a welcoming environment. I intentionally worked to invite all the students by name to offer their opinion on the videos and stories. I deliberately incorporated the teaching methods that we were taught that Jesus used, beginning a lesson by first asking what your students already know or believe, then complimenting them on what they knew. This task I found to be difficult at times. I would catch myself saying, “no your wrong”, instead of finding a more politically correct way to acknowledge their
This video was about making a clearer and more interesting introduction. It was effective as the woman talked about the different levels of an introduction and how it should be presented. The diagrams and examples were very useful.
One of the presentations that I enjoyed the most was Pruva’s presentation on the misconceptions of arranged marriages. Before the presentation I had a negative view on arranged marriages but through the presentation I learned why it is not as bad as people think. The people being set up do not mind it, and 65 percent of Indian students believe that parents should have the final say or their marriage. There was also a study done proving that there is not a difference in happiness levels between arranged marriages verses love marriages. However, there is one thing she should of elaborated on; the definition of arranged marriages. She said arranged marriages are when a third party is involved. This was a little confusing because I am unsure if this means things like friends setting up people count, or if something like online dating websites would count. Though, overall it was a very good and informative presentation. Another presentation I enjoyed was the presentation on the age gap in relationships. I always thought an age gap was around five years or more but really it starts at about ten years. In this presentation I learned that society can make the relationships hard and even cause people to break up. Though, these people are really in love and it is not fair to them for society to negatively judge them. I also liked that she had been in an age gap relationship before so she could understand the emotions better. These presentations make the overall class experience
The number of low-income students enrolled as undergraduates in U.S. colleges and universities, has grown over the past 35 years (NCES, 2007a). For example, the number of low-income students entering college immediately following high school has increased by over 60 percent since 1970 (Mortenson, 2007). Although it may appear
One way I hope to achieve this is by creating programs and support groups that foster the idea of student success. In college, I was fortunate enough to be involved in the First Generation Scholar Program, which allowed me to be surrounded by a supportive group students and advisors that helped facilitate my transition into college. In the program, we had weekly meetings to ensure that we were on track with our academic goals. In addition, we were in constant contact with other students in the program, creating a sense of community among students of our same background. All of this care and assistance created a nurturing environment that cultivated a sense value, acceptance, and encouragement.
The first student was Nathan, who struggled with phonemic awareness. I was interesting in seeing Nathan’s problems rhyming and how that was how his disability was diagnosed. His disabily was only seen in his written language and did not influence his communication skills. I thought that it was interested in hearing that a student’s avoidance of something that’s hard can be commonly mistaken for attentional issues. While I was watching the video I came up with ideas that I thought that the special education teacher should do with Nathan. Some of my ideas were for Nathan to work on
I usually prepare for an exam by making flashcards and rereading my notes. I may need to adjust my study habits by using the chunking method. By doing this, it might help with memorization. I can create acronyms to remember the different types of learning. Research supports because researchers state that by associating information with a kind of meaning, you increase the capacity of memorization.
Many students are struggling in college. According to the New York Times Web site, only 33 percent of the college students are graduating in six years. Obviously students still need much help to succeed in order to get where they want to go. Although college can be challenging, I am going to succeed by using advice from experts, by developing strategies and ideas, and by taking advantage of the benefits offered by my college.
When I study, I use several different study strategies. The top three study strategies that I use are flash cards, I recite, rehearse, and write, and also I use chunking. Flash cards help me out a great due to the fact that I am a logical learner. I learn best when I can see facts written down on paper. It really depends on the information that I am trying to take in for the strategy that I use for studying. For instance, when studying vocabulary words and definitions I use flash cards, and other things that I study I will use other techniques. The mood that I am in when I am preparing to study will also determine the strategy that I will use to absorb the information.
In other words that may mean acquiring an education, being able to take care of one's family, achieving a life's ambition, and acquiring great financial stability. The WISE Choice process and different on course strategies were all created to help individuals prosper and grow through college and the world carrying them through a path that will ensure success. It is in fact important though, that one knows that success is made from hard work and determination. If you have plans to bring forth success it is important that you follow through with each
One of the girls in the group suggested the use of quizlet and said she uses that to study for the majority of her finals. Another girl said she gets together with some people from her class and books a room in the library where they can study together. These were all tips that were very helpful and that I ended up using this semester to study for my finals. I used to just use notecards but now I find that talking out my answers with others is really effective and it help me learn, retain, and understand a lot more information then just doing notecards. Once we had talked about all of that we went around and talked about how stressed we all felt and just kind of listened to each other and offered to help one another. Something that I found that was really nice was one of the girls there was a freshman and she was freaking out because this was her first finals week and the first one is the hardest, but the RA running the event has the
As I look back on the beginning of my journey to a better career and life I can remember the weeks and months leading up to the first day of class. I remember visiting the college and speaking with an advisor to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do, and the steps it would take for me to reach my goals. I recall talking with the advisor about the requirements for my General Education credits as well my need to take a preparatory class for algebra because I scored to low on the placement exam to be allowed to take the full college level math. Along with the preparatory math class my advisor told me that I needed to take “Foundations for College Success”, which I questioned. My advisor explained that the course would lay a solid foundation for me to build my college expectations and learning on by explaining what to expect from college as well as how to handle some of the out of the ordinary roadblocks that college life would undoubtedly throw my way. I remember thinking as probably most all new students do “I don’t need this” or “This is just a filler class, it can’t possibly show me anything I don’t already know”, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I near the end of my time in the Foundations for College Success course I can truly say I am glad I was required to take the course as it provided me with an invaluable wealth of knowledge that will help me throughout the rest of my journey.
