For my final extracurricular activity I went to an event ran by an on campus Resident Assistant. At the event we went over how to not stress about finals and effective ways to study. I found this event to be very helpful and informative, we took time to talk about what was stressing us out and how to deal with it, we also played games to relax and have a calm conversation. The first thing we did at this event was play a game to relax and get comfortable with each other after that we talked about finals. We went around the table talking about how many finales each of us had and how prepared we felt for them. Once we talked about of the finals we had we then talked about some strategies that we all have when it comes to studying.
One of the girls in the group suggested the use of quizlet and said she uses that to study for the majority of her finals. Another girl said she gets together with some people from her class and books a room in the library where they can study together. These were all tips that were very helpful and that I ended up using this semester to study for my finals. I used to just use notecards but now I find that talking out my answers with others is really effective and it help me learn, retain, and understand a lot more information then just doing notecards. Once we had talked about all of that we went around and talked about how stressed we all felt and just kind of listened to each other and offered to help one another. Something that I found that was really nice was one of the girls there was a freshman and she was freaking out because this was her first finals week and the first one is the hardest, but the RA running the event has the
same major as her and offered to study with her and help her and they set up times to help each other out. I thought that was a really nice thing to see, two people helping each other out just for the sake of helping not to get anything out of it. We ended the night playing some more games and just relaxing trying to take some of our stress away by having a good time together. This event was really helpful for me. I have a lot of testing anxiety so when finals week comes around I get really stressed out and almost depressed. This event helped me to see that i'm not alone, there are so many other people on this campus that feel the same way that I do. This event was also helpful because I learned some new great ways to study and I got to have a nice time with some fellow students and friends and take a break from studying to relax with some games. I would definitely attend an event like this again. I would also recommend residents to go to these kind of events on campus. I think a lot of the time residents don't go to events because they think they will be boring but the event we have on campus are always intellectually interesting. This event is specifically perfect for people who have testing anxiety like myself, it was a good time to let out how I was feeling and having a good time. The best part about this event is I realised that I wasn't alone.
Stratford Caldecott’s “Remembering: Grammar-Mythos-Imagining the Real” is from his book Beauty in the Word, published in 2012. In this chapter, he argues that naming, as the beginning of grammar, is an integral part of our humanity. The English Honor Society appeals to me in many ways due to the presented opportunity of meeting new people, helping others while advancing my skills in the English language, and reviewing the subject of English Language Arts altogether. I am very intrigued by many of the mentioned ‘activities’ during the introduction meeting. I enjoy watching plays and musicals that relate to both historical and modern literature; they help to give different interpretations of the main themes and ideas found throughout it and also aid the audience to understand and comprehend ambiguous details. The National Junior Honor Society is a very respected and prestigious organization that I would be glad to be a part of. The students involved exemplify scholarship, leadership, service, character, and knowledge. All of which are traits that are incredibly important in my own life. I feel that each student with the privilege to commit to this foundation should devote some time and effort to those qualities.
A liberal arts core or curriculum is defined as the areas of study or learning that cultivate intellectual thinking and ideas rather than technical work or skills. By providing work within this curriculum students can achieve excellence throughout their college career. Although there is this aspect, a liberal arts core is often questioned if it is really necessary for a successful college career. This paper will discuss how and why a liberal arts curriculum is important as well as how this curriculum can lead to pursuing excellence during a college career as well as having success after college.
Mrs. Kassandra Johnson is the founder of Good Grades Activity Center, which has been operational for over the last five years. The afterschool program takes place in the basement of The Holy Cross Church. The session runs from Monday to Thursday from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Good Grades Activity Center is located in Maspeth and the students are of Polish descent. The majority of the students in the classroom come from middle class families. In the classroom, students range from kindergarten to grade five and are provided with instruction that is aligned to their curriculum. In the afterschool program, there are fifteen students, five girls and ten boys who attend regularly. In addition to the afterschool program taught by Mrs. Johnson, the church also teaches Polish classes to children on the weekends. The neighborhood is comprised of a multitude of ethnicities, which consists of Polish, Irish, Italian and Asian. The majority of the students taught by Mrs. Johnson attend schools in the area, such as P.S 58, I.S 73 and P.S 153.
The main goal of the event was to have the opportunity to meet other interests on campus from a sorority. They had the opportunity to do this with the eight of the Beta Phi Interests and four interests from the group Luis, Gilbert, Jessie, and Omar. They set up and participated in different activities to get to know more about each other in forms of icebreaker games. The first activity was to get into two separate lines facing each other, then someone asked a question where everyone then had the opportunity to answered the question with whoever they were face to face with. I have decided to apply to the UNCW Honors College because I believe that it will help further enhance my education. I believe that I will be pushed and encouraged to do my best in not only in academics but in my future endeavors as I search for a career as well.
Two years ago when I started my first semester, my mother was living with me, and at 63 diagnosed with early dementia, which led to severe depression and the need for her to be placed in assisted living. I managed to successfully deal with this and other family troubles, while maintaining an average GPA of 3.6, and I made Dean’s List twice. Accomplishing my goals while dealing with this type of stress was only possible due to stress management tools I utilize daily. Meditation, regular walks and hikes with my dog, and escaping to enjoy the stillness of the woods to re-group are other tools I use. During unusually stressful days, I will go for a jog and then soak in the tub with candles and lavender oil. All of these tools have kept me grounded, strong and able to perform well under pressure. In the past when I’m more overwhelmed than usual, I find talk therapy works very well, and simply being able to discuss problems with people who are not personally involved helps a great
The clock ticks, sweat drips down foreheads, and the professor watches intently as the students take their tests. It’s finals week, a dreaded time when students cram as much information into their heads as possible and try not to burn out until the completion of their semester exams. There isn’t much to be done about the stress. At this point it is inevitable. The stress put upon students while attending college has caused an increase in the number of suicides as well as a rise in cases of depression.
How to Deal With StressMany students go to school full time, and hold a part time job to earn money for school. Most students have about four classes, and each of the teacher’s of these classes gives an average of about an hour of homework each night; that averages out to four hours per night of homework, plus a part time job. School causes a lot of students stress because there are so many things to do, and so little time to do it. Stress is a normal part of everyone’s life; and is not a disease. It is not necessarily good or bad; however, reactions to stress can be harmful. Lack of time puts the stress on many students, and causes students to often procrastinate because they are constantly trying to meet deadlines and they don’t have the time to work on their assignments. Many students feel their grades are important; they need plenty of time to work on their work so they can do good. I can relate to them because if I get a low grade I get disgusted because I put a lot of time and effort in doing that assignment. But I think that a lot of the stress from school is caused, not only by the teachers, but also from the students to do well. Students put too much stress on themselves. A student just has to learn to manage their time well and just do as good as possible. Stress management involves the effort of that student to make emotional and physical changes.
I am very blessed to be able to attend Oakleaf High School, it is a modern and technologically advanced high school and any outsider who walks in can immediately tell that the teachers really do strive to see us students succeed. In my junior year, a fellow student came into the classroom and handed a few students a rolled up piece of paper that resembled a scroll. It piqued my interest because something like this never happens. She placed the last scroll in her hand on my desk and quickly spoke up, "This one is for you," I opened and read it immediately, it was an invitation to join the National Science Honor Society. I was elated at the chance to join something that meant a lot to me. I had always been interested in the STEM fields, even before they started being
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a few things about myself. I have learned that I can be independent, I always knew myself as someone who could do mostly everything on their own. This semester really made me realize how independent I could actually be. Not only have I learned how independent I am I have also realized the importance of time management. With not having a strict class schedule it was a lot different than what I was originally used to. After a few weeks, I learned ways that would work best for me, for example writing down that I needed to get done. I learned that I need to focus on what 's ahead of me to accomplish what I want to succeed in, to manage what needs to be done ahead of time to stay caught up.
