“If at first you don’t succeed, try try again” Everyone has heard these words at least once in their lives, and they apply to all aspects of life, from birth till death. A similar concept, grit, emphasizes persevering against the odds. Resisting being discouraged by failure and earning things instead of just getting them are additional focal points of this concept. It is important to keep grit in mind in order to be successful in life. According to Judy Holland, Grit is continuing to work at a task despite what else the individual may want to do. She also claims that effort should be rewarded over outcome and that failure is an important learning experience (Holland 2015). Opponents of this concept, such as Alfie Kohn argue that continuing to be persistent can be counterproductive and can lead to wasting time and effort on unimportant things. They also declare that continuing on with unreachable goals can be unhealthy and can lead to becoming less focused on long term implications of time management (Kohn 2014). In my school studies, English is a very difficult subject for me. I get no pleasure from writing papers and doing so results in some terrible papers. I continue to work at them however, because without passing this class I cannot get my degree and obtain my dream job of designing cars. Judy Holland claims that promoting effort over outcome will promote self-respect. I support this statement because the effort of someone who dislikes doing something will be greater than someone who enjoys it, but the result will often be of lower quality. I dislike my job immensely due to the fact that it is repetitive, boring, and unrewarding. I stick with it however because without it I would not be able to do the things I enjoy due to a lack of funding.
