RPG’s have been a popular form of video game since video games have existed. What makes a good RPG depends on a few factors such as game mechanics, lovable characters, and an interesting story. A good RPG incorporates extensive information about characters background. “What makes these games so desirable, and so repeatable, is that they have amazing stories that draw you in and make you feel for the characters in ways many western games don’t.”(Sheng, 2013). The RPG should incorporate good music to fit the scenes well. Voice acting is nice to have in an RPG but it is not necessary, “and it’s true that the voice acting isn’t that crucial.”Jonez (2013). Many of the best RPG’s have no voice acting when some of the best voice acting are in horrible RPG’s.
One example of a great RPG is Final Fantasy VII. The game came out in the late 90’s. It was popular in both Japan and America. Engulfing players across multiple consoles and PC’s in an in-depth world filled with adventure and fun. Final Fantasy VII changed the way RPG’s are made and revolutionized RPG’s as a whole with its intense in depth story line and its multi-leveling. “FF7 is, without a doubt, the new benchmark for console titles.” (Boor, 1997, para.1).
FF7 had sales of over 10 million, and to this day holds the record of most purchased Final Fantasy game. The game is one of the best-selling games of all time, and so additional content has been created to support its sales. The game has been reported to each generation’s popular Sony consoles along with PC. Tetsuya Nomura says “When I look back. I remember having no conception of just how massive that project would become.”(ZDNet. 2005). Final Fantasy VII continues to bring in a flow of income to Square with downloadable versio...

...e storyline, the music, the character choices, and the mechanics. What makes a truly great RPG is combining all of those features with style and innovation, creating new content in new ways. Final fantasy VII is a great example of a great PRG because it does just that, incorporating all the things that fans love in an RPG and pushing the limit just a little bit further.

It is important to create complex, progressive characters. Characters should speak with intent and purpose. You can establish who a character is through tone and what they say. You can also reveal character through thoughts and background information. Not all characters have to have an origin; they can just be there. You should have conflicting traits between the characters. Challenging your characters adds
During the 1990’s the video games were constantly changing.this decade saw tons of innovations in the gaming industry. The creation of 32-bit games and 3D games dominated the virtual world: Contra, Battletoads, Mortal Kombat, etc. Video game genres developed and branched out, creating some of the popular genres in video games today, such Role-playing games(RPGs),
In pages 20-24 of Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, I agree that there are many different video games. For me, I am a fan of single-player games with story modes because I can play by myself and go at a pace that suits me. However, I enjoy playing online multiplayer when I have friends I can play with because it is fun interacting with friends and doing stuff together. I play on a console or my computer, but I have played on my phone and a hand-held device. I have not played a board game or card game in a while, but I would play it if the opportunity presents itself. The video games genres I play are sports, action, and adventure. I agree with Jane McGonigal that video games share four defining traits,
RPGs or role playing games are games in which the player takes on the roles of the characters and controls their actions in order to further character development. RPGs generally have a strong story and character back story that fully immerses the player in the fictional world. Final Fantasy 13 or FF13 for short is the 13th installment in the Final Fantasy franchise and it that falls under this genre of gaming. A game of this genre and style should strive to have well developed visuals, a complete story, full character backstories that are interesting, a non-linear gameplay, and a solid functioning combat system. These things among others are the backbone of games in general and meeting them in a way that creates an in-depth and fun experience is required. All these elements are existent in FF13 but some of them are not fine-tuned or developed enough in order to create an enjoyable experience. Based on those criteria Final Fantasy 13 falls short in compared to its previous installments and in the genre in general.
A misplaced shot to the head by a mysterious man in a checkered suit and a quick burial in a shallow grave kicks off the next chapter in Bethesda’s juggernaut series: Fallout: New Vegas. While New Vegas is more expansive and jam packed than any other Fallout game to date, “this game still feels like a huge, awesome expansion” (Steimer) to the game’s predecessor. The setting takes place in a massive west coast wasteland littered with gangs, death, and ravenous creatures contesting the rebuilt ruins of Las Vegas, renamed to New Vegas after the nuclear war with China, as the wastelands marvelous centerpiece. To complete all quests, missions, and adventures in the game, “expect to rack up a total of around 100 hours.” (Steimer).
Yo jimbo is a friend of mine. His company, Dreamscape, had had a huge effect on my life. It has changed my life in many ways. I have made many new friends, discovered my love of role playing, and adopted an over all different life style.
When developing video games, cultural rhetoric is a positive component to include in any game design. It can help highlight details within a game design and make the overall game more compelling. In addition, cultural rhetoric within games helps recognize cultural distinction and allows gamers to interact with people of different cultures. The concept of cultural rhetoric within a video game is to make the components simulate objects that are familiar in the real world and also allow the gamer to be able to define cultural differences between different groups of society throughout the world. “Seeing games as a social contexts for social cultural learning acknowledges how games replicate, reproduce, and sometime transform cultural beliefs and principals” ( S&Z 516). Including cultural differences and objects within a game helps draw consumers towards gaming because shows a sense of reality that is seen through the mise-en-scene and the overall play experience. A good example of a game that contains cultural rhetoric and is portrayed by its game design is Left 4 Dead 2. Left 4 Dead 2 is able to exemplify the idea of cultural competence through the mise-en-scene, the representations of gender through the characters and the play experience through its online multiplayer mode.
Instead of the franchises popularity having a positive impact, overtime, it infected the gaming market along with it’s consumers and developers such as Microsoft Game Studios and EA. It has become an aggrandized cancer on the face of video games everywhere, destroying franchises a...
Art can be divide in to two different categories, “literacy arts,” art forms that attempt to tell a story, and “fine arts,” traditional works, sculptures, and paintings, as well music and dance. Video games, along with film, are an example of a literacy art form. Video games are increasingly becoming literacy art by telling stories that are equal if not better than those found in most movies. Not just mediocre stories to have them in the games, but compelling stories that drive the player to push forward. Bioshock, a 2007 release, is an example of this increasing importance of stories in video games. Influenced by philosophy and the works of Ayn Rand, the creator where able to create a cautionary tale of man’s individualism and genetic tweaking (VerBruggen).
Video games started as arcade machines with simple graphics and even simpler stories, soon evolving into home gaming with The Magnavox Odyssey, the world’s first home-gaming console. It invaded living rooms in 1972, selling 300,000 units. Since then there has been many consoles and games released, some have been huge commercial successes which
Video games, specifically home consoles, came to the US on October 18th 1985. The NES. Most games around that time were all bright and cheerful looking games such as Mario, Kirby, Legend Of Zelda, and Pokemon a few years later on the Gameboy. But as other game developers appeared, new types of games were made. The shooter genre and fighting genre of games came mostly on the Xbox and PS systems with a couple exceptions being on a Nintendo console(Doom, Goldeneye, Smash bros). Now shooter games
...hat could only be made by Naughty Dog, a developer that understands certain risks need to be taken in order to create a story that is engaging, beautifully detailed and, above all, unique. The breath-taking graphics, superb writing, and compelling gameplay make this game what it is, which is truly amazing. “The Last of Us” has raised the bar on the expectations of developers and gamers alike, and will surely have an impact on the future of all games.
Gamers are gamers regardless of where they live. There are many gamers around the world, and one of the largest gaming populations is located in Japan. Niizumi Japan has been, and continues to be, one of the largest developers and creators of both video gaming consoles and video games around the world. Japanese video games are beneficial to society and are an excellent source of employment for many in Japan. To understand how video gaming relates to Japanese culture, we need to understand more about the country of Japan.
Video games have come a long way. They have evolved from the simple game of Pong into a complex, multi-platform, multi-genre, multi-billion dollar industry.
...y a tiny fraction of the known players. The results I got may not be an accurate depiction of the entire body especially because the surveyed were not completely random. Only further studies performed around the world could offer a more meaningful set of data. Nevertheless, I believe that the patterns I saw were fairly true to the overall population of rpg’ers. Their world is one of escape for them from the problems of physical life. They use these fictional characters to live the dreams and fantasies they will never be able to do in real life. Only in an RPG can a weak, skinny, acne-ridden teenager destroy an enemy nine times his size and still get the beautiful maiden. They are free to be who they are internally and who they wish to become someday. Their dreams may never come true in real life, but they get a small taste of complete idealism through RPG’s.
