1. Introduction This research focuses on cohesion in the native article "Why Gender Equality Stalled" by Stephanie Cootnz in the American newspaper "Newyork times" and the non-native article "Women at the forefront" by Reem Leila in "Al-ahram weekly". It identifies certain grammatical and lexical cohesive devices. As for grammatical cohesion, it analyzes the reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. While the lexical cohesive devices, it analyzes repetition, synonymy, antonymy, superordinate and general words. This research paper sheds light on the similarities and differences in the way the native and the non-native use these cohesive devices and finds out which one succeeds more in using them and makes the text more coherent which play an important role in delivering the message …show more content…
2. Features Cohesion refers to the relations of meaning within a text and determines it as a text or not. Moreover, cohesion is divided into grammatical and lexical cohesion. Firstly, the grammatical cohesion refers to the role played by grammar in linking sentences and clauses together. Grammatical cohesion is classified into reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunctions. Furthermore, reference is when certain items have the property of reference refer to something or someone for their interpretation. (salkie, 2001, p.64). Moreover, reference is classified into exophoric and endophoric. In addition, endophoric is subdivided into anaphoric and cataphoric. There are three types of reference: personal, demonstrative and comparative. Substitution is when one item is replaced by another in the text. It is divided into three types: nominal, verbal and clausal. (Brown and Yule, 1989, p.201). Moreover, Ellipsis is the omission of parts of the structure which are replaced by nothing. Many times, when an author writes a story, he will use different techniques to influence the way that the reader absorbs the work. Writers use both paratactic style and syntactic style. These two styles contrast each other greatly, but on the same term, they greatly compliment one another. In the book The Things They Carried, O'Brien uses both of these styles. In this essay, syntactic and paratactic style will be examined in the story "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong". Examples in the story will be examined and described according to the two styles of writing. The syntactic style will be focused on more intensely however, because of the way that it effects the sections of the story that will be discussed. It will also show that the historical context of the story effects the styles of writing.
In recent years, gender differences have already been one of the most controversial issues in various research. As an important communication tool of mankind, language is inevitably involved in controversies. However, Rachel Rafelman, a Canadian journalist and the author of “The Party Line” express her thought and opinion in her essay. She not only have some great points on what and how women and men are likely to talk, but also have different points on the talking environment. She comes up with facts and fit real and particle examples in her essay to make it understood. Whereas, Ronald Macaulay, a professor of linguistics and the author of “Sex Difference” uses words of novels to argue and promotes them as a cause of reinforce to men’s and women’s stereotypes in his essay. He argues through his whole as rebuttal and gives some examples to oppose the preconceived notion of sex differences. Over all, both Rafelman and Macaulay are the good writer but Rafelman is having upper to prove her essay better organized using her tones as per requirement.
In Chapter 8, the author Marquis R. Nave illustrates how important sentence structure is by pointing out a few important things when forming sentences adequate to use in your writing. He starts by saying that lucid and efficacious word usage to form sentences in writing becomes vital when you need to write papers in a higher education institution. Once the scholar grabs control of his or her ability to communicate their message to the reader lucidly and efficaciously they gain the power to an improved and ordered thought process. Now a person can start to search for new ways of using dialectal to communicate their message in a way not usual to the norm. A scholar only has the power to govern their writing when they correctly put together

Prepositions “are words that join one word or phrase to another” (Rodby 33), while conjunctions “join sentence elements or sentences” (Rodby 33). An example of a preposition can be found in the following sentence: “He comes over and says, "Girls, this isn't the beach" (Updike, A&P). The word “over” functions as a preposition, because it connects the phrases “he comes”, and “and says”. The three types of conjunctions coordinating, subordinating, and correlative. Subordinating conjunctions “join dependent clauses to main clauses”, while coordinating conjunctions “join independent clauses or phrases”, and “correlative conjunctions are pairs of words that join phrases” (Rodby 266).

In this essay I intend to investigate how differently one of the closed word classes, determiners, are approached in a series of pre and post corpus-based English grammar reference books, course books and practice books. And the theme of my investigation is how corpus affects the development of English teaching materials. The grammar reference books I intend to analyze and compare are “A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language” (ACGEL) and “Cambridge Grammar of English” (CGE). The former is an indispensable grammar reference book first published in 1985, which has been widely consulted in researches in relation to English linguistic studies, while the later offers clear explanations of both spoken and written English grammar based on authentic everyday usage.

Computational linguistics is a discipline between linguistics and computer science which is concerned with the computational aspects of the human language. This area of computer science overlaps with the field of Artificial Intelligence. Basically, computational linguistics is a series of programs that interprets human speech into words and actions. Syntax helps us to make clear sentences that “sound right,” where words, phrases, and clauses each serve their function and are correctly ordered to form and communicate a complete sentence with meaning. The rules of syntax combine words into phrases and phrases into sentences. Not only does it focus on the correct word order for a language, but it also helps show the relationship between the meaning of a group of words. Without proper syntax, a sentence can be meaningless. It is key to understand that while every language does have certain syntax, the syntax does vary from language to language. It
