In the book Good To Great, the author talks about a compelling modesty and the qualities it takes to be a Level 5 Executive leader. The 10 qualities listed in the book are being quiet, humble, modest, reserved, shy, gracious, mild-mannered, self-effacing, understated, and not believing in their own clippings. Though these are not necessarily qualities that are linked with great leaders it turns out based on this study that they actually are the ones that stand out from good leaders to great ones. In my personal experience I have never really worked with a leader who displayed these 10 qualities. Most of the leaders and CEO’s I have worked under have been very vocal about their accomplishments for the organization. At companywide meetings they
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Social change and charity have two different effects on the community in chapter one of Leadership for a Better World by Susan R. Komives. Chapter one discusses the differentiation in the ideas when one is more practical in a culture. Social change is defined as affecting the root of the social problem (Komives 11). An example of social change is the Civil Rights Movement, where Martin Luther King Jr. led groups of people to end segregation. King wasn’t just trying to help the problem of having sit in the back of the bus or drinking from different water fountains, his objective was to generate an equal society where racial segregation didn’t exist. Charity classification as donating food, money, and other kinds of goods is given to a community. An illustration of this is the local soup kitchen, where they provide food for the
Contemporary organizations expect advantageous styles of leadership to lead and facilitate operations as we move forward into the 21st century. This need requires leaders and organizations to instill a style of leadership advantageous to supporting and leading a culture towards organizational effectiveness and connecting to support and uphold organizational strategies. Thus, the success of an organization usually contains successful leaders who understand and support the needs of the employees. The characteristics of successful leaders include selflessness, mentoring, empowerment, influence, support and empathy among other positive traits (Hoffman, Bynum, Piccolo & Sutton, 2011; Karakitapoglu-Aygun & Gumusluoglu, 2013; Sabir, Sohail & Khan, 2011; Shankers & Sayeed, 2012).
Collins research, although flaw in various way, sheds light on what an exceptional leader is. A leader must show humility, be humble and non-egocentric, as well as show intellectual intelligence for their company and know how to effectively manager their company. Collins research however does not find the crucial question of exceptional leadership: how are level 5 leaders formed?1 Collins creates hypothesis and theories in the text but cannot find a direct correlation to how each leader on his list became a level 5 leaders. This limits the reader and leads them to guess if emulating the qualities of a level 5 leader would they ever become one themselves. Collins lack of research limits businesses in finding level 5 leaders, since a level 5 leader cannot be fully determined until after they are succeeded by another CEO.

With that said, it is no easy task to narrow down to a few, the qualities that made and make these men and women so incredibly talented. Great leadership is essential to the well being of any populace, and, undoubtedly, the United States has seen some of the greatest leaders of any country. The qualities that our greatest leaders demonstrate are those such as courage, whether in the face of danger or in the turmoil of the political arena; humility, the essential humbleness that encourages the trust of the people and assures you are a leader of sound judgment and respect; and, of course, passion, the driving force behind innovation, the ambition to

Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders.
Traits of a good leader are trustworthiness, respectfulness, honesty, and be stern. When you have leaders that take their role seriously, you can form a backbone to an organization that cannot be broken. You have born leaders and you have trained leaders. Martin Luther King was a natural born leader for the Civil Rights movement. King saw there was something that needed to be changed and he took the steps to change the world.
Perhaps the most important qualities of a leader are passion and motivation. Especially when leading a group for a particular cause, a leader must be personally attached to that cause. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, is a legendary leader because he fought for a cause that directly affected him. had he not been pushing for a personal reason, his actions would not have been as passionate. This would have caused a lack in motivation, another essential leadership quality. A leader faces many roadblocks and opposition and thus, must be motivated to continue fighting and leading. A leader’s attitude and opinions are valued by the group and therefore, if a leader is motivated, the group will be, too. The continued actions and successes, no matter how small, which move the group closer to its goal also help its motivation and drive.
Leadership is a wonderful quality for anyone to have because not everyone possesses leadership qualities and skills; however, a person can learn to have leadership qualities if he or she has the desire. A good leader has many excellent qualities such as; a leader has followers, knows how to encourage the workers, can get results by implementing strategies, can create a vision for the company, and communicates the vision clearly. These are not the only qualities a leader must have but they are some of the most important qualities a person must have in order to be successful in a leadership position. In the world, there are two types of people; the ones who lead, and the ones who follow. Whether or not a person is a sheep or a wolf is determined by characteristics inherited from the outside world. The wolf personality takes control of the pack and leads it. While the sheep sits and waits for the wolf to create the path for them. These two qualities are defined by a series of characteristics. Great leaders are those who display unbreakable confidence, indestructible focus, and exemplary empowerment.
John Maxwell is a distinguished author, speaker and pastor who specializes on leadership and leadership development. This paper is outlines my reflections from watching his YouTube video presentation of his five levels of leadership. It was insightful that Maxwell, (2013) explained that all leaders start at level one, then continue to develop in their capabilities through level five. He outlines each of the five stages, identifying the attributes and tendencies of each of the levels. He describes that followers view leaders through different lenses, each the lenses is a reflection of one of the five stages.
