Are you surprised that this is a 2006 case? Why or why not?
I am not surprised that this case happened in 2006. However, by this time I would have assumed that gender roles in positions such as Firefighting and the police department would be accommodating and accepting. There are a lot of rules of society, laws and general discussion that are influenced by gender equality. I’m unsure why multiple facilities that Ms. Kline and Ms. Wedow visited obtained inadequate restrooms and changing areas. In 2006, I would assume that all employment places would have a restroom designated for men and a restroom designated for women. The fire department did not give any reasonable explanations as to why they did not provide the female fire fighters with the proper fitting uniforms, there for I can conclude that the department really did not have any valid reason as to why they did not provide the females with the proper clothing and equipment. I honestly think the fire department treated the lady employees this way because they did not want them to be there. I feel that giving them oversized men’s clothing instead of their women’s sized clothing symbolized that Firefighting is a man’s job.
There is no direct reasoning as tom why the women’s claims were ignored. They also has a lack of representation for women throughout several of the fire stations. For eight years the two ladies had to endure uncomfortable situations. Maybe the fire department did not think they women would stay and be employed for as long as they were, or maybe this was the departments way of “saving money”. Whatever the excuse may be, I commend the two women for still working in the fire department despite the fact that they were treated unfairly. I don’t know what I would have done if I were in their shoes, I probably would have filed a complaint after a few months of not receiving my proper uniform. The "glass ceiling" has held women back from certain positions and opportunities in the workplace. Women are stereotyped as part-time, lower-grade workers with limited opportunities for training and advancement because of this "glass ceiling". Gender discrimination in the workplace is something that both men and women experience, women more than men. For instance, the current gender pat gap is 21 percent. This means that women are currently making 21 percent less than what their male counterparts are making. It has decreased over the years, but it is still a significant gap. In the workplace, women do not only experience discrimination in pay, but also in opportunities. An article states that, women are deemed less communal than men and that makes them less suited for certain careers (Miner, et. al, 2014). Since the nineteen twenties women of America have been considered equal citizens of our country, and had to work hard in order to obtain that equality in the workplace. One may reconsider the success rate of females in America, and if they really have made it as far as popular belief may have it. Of course, American women can vote, can hold office, and they can work, which is more than can be said for some countries. But do both sexes really hold equal in the workplace regarding manners of salary and respect? Does the corporate executive world really take women seriously? These are some of the arguments made by women today that do not feel that they are being treated equal in the workplace. On the other hand, those who believe women are treated equally usually reason that differences balance out in statistics, things such as majority of teachers are women, and women also have a hold on the entrepreneur side of businesses. The voices that are still screaming come from an audience who feel that women still have a long way to go before achieving a status of total equality.
By only giving the choice of using a Men’s or a Women’s bathroom it has further enforced the gender binary: “In the moment that one must choose between two doors—one marked “men” and one marked “women”—the binary construction of gender is never more blatantly enforced” (Herman, 2012, p.25). When someone is presented with only two choices of restrooms, it is enforcing the ideals that those are the only two options a person can be. Gender neutral washroom has been increasing constructed in Fredericton especially in school and campus. It is a good phenomenon to show the protection and supporting for LGBTQ group by society, however, the fact shows that there are some distances to achieve the equality for LGBTQ people in Canada at present. A student claimed that he was harassed in female washroom in her first year in UNB, there was a drunk guy outside the female washroom and though the interviewer was a boy going to female washroom according to her appearance. The interviewer said the guy was yelling at her and going to attack her. Fortunately, her friend was coming with her and helped her to solve the problem.
The idea of gender roles stems from gender identity and gender norms; meaning that gender roles were created because a concept of society claims different genders act and look in different ways from another and the idea that certain things that one gender does is acceptable for one but not for the other. Although males receive the masculinity role, females take on the role of feminism associated with neutering, submissive, and lower ranking behaviors. On the other hand, women have proven that they can perform firefighting work, including nearly all of the physical work, as effectively as men. They have not disrupted the bonding and mutual dependence required for a firefighting unit to work effectively and professionally. While women have overcome these objections to prove that they could perform firefighting work, women nonetheless continue to face indirect forms of discrimination. While women may find it easier than men to get a job as a firefighter because of their higher test scores, they continue to face subtle forms of resentment and discrimination. As a result, discourages larger numbers of women from entering the field. This causes some to develop stress and give up on their desire to take firefighting up as a career.
This essay is an analysis of contemporary issues associated with gender and power in the workplace; which will specifically include a discussion of gender relations, stereotyping, women’s identity, the structuring of formal and informal power, sources of inequality, and sexual harassment.
If one takes a closer look at the issues surrounding the differences between the male and female roles in the workforce and in education, one will notice that women tend to be one step below men on the "status" or "importance" ladder.
The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) notes, “Discrimination against an individual because that person is transgender is discrimination because of sex in violation of Title VII. This is also known as gender identity discrimination” ("EEOC - Sex," n.d., para. 3). According to Canas and Sondak (2014), many states have adopted legislation that supports transgender people as a protected class. Colorado passed legislation extending protection to transgender people in 2008 (Brinker & Maza, 2014). However, one of the biggest controversies surrounding transgender individuals is which bathroom should they use? Zanin (2009) notes, “bathrooms remain one of the most acceptable gender-segregated spaces in cities which can present problems to those who do not conform to gender norms…” (para. 1). The question, then, is should transgender people use the bathroom that most closely mirrors their biological gender or the gender they identify with? While individual beliefs may vary greatly, legally, there is less of a gray area. This paper will address the recently decided Colorado case involving a transgender six year old child, Coy Mathis, and her fight to use the girls’ bathroom at school. In addition to this, legal issues and implications employers should be aware of will also be discussed.
Gender Inequality at a Workplace Historically, males and females normally assume different kinds of jobs with varying wages in the workplace. These apparent disparities are widely recognized and experienced across the globe, and the most general justification for these differences is that they are the direct outcomes of discrimination or traditional gender beliefs—that women are the caregivers and men are the earners. However, at the turn of the new century, women have revolutionized their roles in the labor market. Specifically in industrialized societies, the social and economic position of women has shifted. Despite the improving participation of women in the labor force and their ameliorating proficiency and qualifications, the labor force is still not so favorable to women.
As a topic that exists in today 's society I chose to conduct two separate interviews for my writing class on "Gender and the workplace" , I interviewed Brittany Smith , who’s a women supervisor for GM (General Motors). As well as a Johnnie O 'Bannon, Who 's a manager for General Motors.
