After reading your answer I was able to come to several conclusions. To begin, in my opinion the first question wasn’t completely answered, because you didn’t fully explain the comparison of what the Foster City Police Department listed as their basic values versus the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office basic values. Additionally, your statement of, “ The study of ethics has a lot to do with how a law enforcement agency determines what their mission statement and values might be.” is an interesting perspective that I wouldn't be able to conclude on my own. Next, I believe that for the third question you should’ve gone more in depth, because your answer was a surface level explanation. For the fourth question I agree with the pros and cons that
you have given when it comes to giving police officers wide discretion. From your response I was able to think of one more pro and con. The pro of allowing police officer wide discretion is more creative ways to solve solutions. The cons of allowing police officers wide discretion is the lack of consistency. Finally, I was quite please with your last answer, because you brought out an interesting point that in this modern technology age police abuse is more readily caught by cellphones or cameras

In conclusion, police corruption was and still is a major problem in the united states. Police are placed into society to serve and protect, but the New Orleans Police Department was infested with corruption from murder to drugs. Len Davis was the first police officer in history to ever receive to death penalty because of his unspeakable crimes that he had committed. Unfortunately, Kim Groves life was taken because she filed a complaint on Len Davis. The individuals that had really suffered were her children and family. Len Davis had no morals or value for life nor did he have any remorse for this unspeakable crime that he had committed. The Baltimore City police have faced a myriad of problems in the last year. The riots following the Freddie Gray arrest were reported around the country and created a situation where the Governor was forced to call in the National Guard to protect the city. Community leaders report that African American’s are stopped, searched and arrested at a far greater number than Caucasian’s. The Baltimore city police are at an impasse with the community at this time, it is up to the city leaders and the police officials to come up with some real solutions to the issues that can no longer be ignored.

Sam and Earl Veney robbed a liquor store in December 1964. The two black men also shot two police officers, killing one. They were caught and convicted. But the police manhunt in Baltimore for the Veney brothers became almost as infamous as their crimes. Without warrants, police broke into scores of homes in black neighborhoods. Some critics protested that the raids were a widespread violation of civil liberties. Federal courts and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had to get involved.

I feel the best type of leadership is the combination of a bureaucratic and participative style. For my Internship, I was lucky enough to do it with South Elgin Police department, which is located on ten north water street in South Elgin Illinois, 60177. There are about thirty members that work for the South Elgin Police Department. South Elgin Police department is a public safety service that is for the community of South Elgin. Their mission is to exist to enhance the quality of life for the South Elgin Community that supports core values. Such as integrity, reputation, family, faith, progressive and compassion for other people. This means that all of the values go with the way that Police Officer should handle them self and how everyone in society should act around each other on a daily basis. South Elgin Police Department has four detectives which include a sergeant that see over in ingestions deviation. They also have one crime prevention officer, who force on the community relationship between the department and the people of south Elgin. They also have one civilian public aid Officer who goes around the community tracking down vehicles that are abandoned and helps the department maintain cars. They also a k-9 unit to help out with their daily actives when needed. South Elgin also has to two civilians that work in the record department . They also have four sergeants for every shift. Police corruption, misconduct, and brutality in the United States have been issues since the creation of watch system in the United States (Grant& Terry, 2012). New policy and training is now in place and the corruption, misconduct, and brutality has gone down since the beginning of policing. This is a huge issue that impacts all police organizations in the United States. The extent of police corruption, misconduct, and brutality is hard to track in the United States. A lot of these crimes go unreported, tossed aside, or the officer responsible gets little or no punishment. This is huge issue in the United States criminal justice system.
Within our police system in America, there are gaps and loopholes that give leeway to police officials who either abuse the authority given to them or do not represent the ethical standards that they are expected to live up to by society. Because of the nature of police work, there is a potential for deterioration of these ethical and moral standards through deviance, misconduct, corruption, and favoritism. Although these standards are set in place, many police officers are not held accountable for their actions and can easily get by with the mistreatment of others because of their career title. While not every police abuses his or her power, the increasingly large percentage that do present a problem that must be recognized by the public as well as those in charge of police departments throughout our country. Police officials are abusing their power and authority through three types of misconduct known as malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance and these types are being overlooked by management personnel who rarely intervene even though they know what is happening. Misconduct is wrong because it violates rights and causes people to be wrongly accused of crimes or be found not guilty and set free when they are still an endangerment to other people. The public needs to be educated on what is happening in the police system in hopes that someone will speak out to protect citizens from being violated by police officers.

In order to have effective policing I believe integrity and ethics play a huge part in helping build trust within communities. Sound conduct by police improves community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder. There are three ways that police departments can strengthen community relationships just by training officers about procedural justice, bias reduction, and racial reconciliation. If we implement these concepts, we can create an environment in which effective partnerships between the police and citizens can flourish.
All organizations, especially law enforcement agencies, require leadership. Maintaining a dependable leadership structure is key to the success of any organization. The philosophy of the modern style of police leadership involves a leader who is strong, competitive and unreceptive to change. Police leadership is based from an autocratic style which is founded on integrity and courage, embracing teamwork, involvement and shared leadership (Cordner & Scarborough, 2010). This style of leadership works well in an emergency situation in which rapid decision making and strict control is needed. The negative aspect to this style of leadership is the inability of the organization to function with the absence of leadership.
The New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for helping the community to decrease or reduce crime, corruption and improve the responsibility of safety and protection in New Zealand. There is a need to make changes to the police culture in order to improve the performance of their organisation. However there are three fundamental errors that need to be addressed which will be discussed in this essay. Firstly, there is a lack of an established sense of urgency which has the potential to jeopardize the future of the organization. Secondly is, not creating a powerful enough guiding coalition which means there is a lack of communication which resulted in an absence of leadership and teamwork from frontline staff to national headquarters. Finally, an undercommunicating the vision by a factor of ten that organisation leader needs to communicate visions and strategies. These three errors are relevant as they are pivotal in the implementation of a managing change programme. Recommendations are also provided to improve on how the New Zealand Police can be enhanced within a management perspective.
