For my Internship, I was lucky enough to do it with South Elgin Police department, which is located on ten north water street in South Elgin Illinois, 60177. There are about thirty members that work for the South Elgin Police Department. South Elgin Police department is a public safety service that is for the community of South Elgin. Their mission is to exist to enhance the quality of life for the South Elgin Community that supports core values. Such as integrity, reputation, family, faith, progressive and compassion for other people. This means that all of the values go with the way that Police Officer should handle them self and how everyone in society should act around each other on a daily basis. South Elgin Police Department has four detectives which include a sergeant that see over in ingestions deviation. They also have one crime prevention officer, who force on the community relationship between the department and the people of south Elgin. They also have one civilian public aid Officer who goes around the community tracking down vehicles that are abandoned and helps the department maintain cars. They also a k-9 unit to help out with their daily actives when needed. South Elgin also has to two civilians that work in the record department . They also have four sergeants for every shift. South Elgin is a small town Police department which makes is a good learning environment even if there is not a lot of heavy crime in the area. However, most people would be going to be doing an internship with a small department like south Elgin will be shocked due to the fact that things happen because people are humans and make mistakes. There are criminals even in a small town like South Elgin. I learned it still can be interesting in a small town of 21,000 people where crime in not as big as another
Cop in the hood is a book about Peter Moskos experience as a police officer in the eastern district of Baltimore. First, as a sociologist at Harvard, he was very curious about the job of Policing. There is a lot of misconception and myth about the job so what a better way to learn than become one? His coworkers were at first wary of the Harvard liberal, expecting him to do a poor job due to being primarily concerned with his research. Police culture is naturally untrustworthy of outsiders as most citizens have no idea what the job is actually like.
The Baltimore City police have faced a myriad of problems in the last year. The riots following the Freddie Gray arrest were reported around the country and created a situation where the Governor was forced to call in the National Guard to protect the city. Community leaders report that African American’s are stopped, searched and arrested at a far greater number than Caucasian’s. The Baltimore city police are at an impasse with the community at this time, it is up to the city leaders and the police officials to come up with some real solutions to the issues that can no longer be ignored.
The mission for the Appleton Police Department is it is a community responsive organization that strives to bring its employees and citizens into working partnership to help identify and solve the communities problems. This paper will show four different police departments that are currently hiring or recruiting for police officers. There will be a summary on the research found on the process used to recruit police officers. It will also show their current hiring trends and what hiring practices they have that are successful or not successful. The paper will also go over the different methods departments use to train their new officers and their values.
The Officers are tasked with the responsibility to bring together both governmental and private resources in order to achieve positive results. They are often encouraged to spend a significant amount of time and energy raising and preserving individual interactions with residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations.
This agency is also known as “PERF” and their focus is mainly anything dealing with police officers, plus technology is important to them because it can change plenty of lives. This law enforcement agency deals with using government funding and donations to help increase policing in communities, while taking in consideration the officer’s life. Their position is to support the police, along with promoting the importance of safety. Some of their ideas are a nationwide public safety broadband network, next generation 911, Real-Time crime centers, and cybercrime. For example, Government Tech goes into detail with Real-Time Centers, which states, “Facilities that can gather vast amounts of crime-related data, such as arrest records, mug shots and warrant information, and then push it out to officers and investigators in the field, are expected to have an impact on crime investigations in the future, according to PERF ”(Kidd). The agency has some great ideas in the works. The next political actor would be the court, but they are involved in a different way. The courts aren’t upheld or anything in this policy, however the decisions in certain court cases made the police relevant to many people and others began to take notice. Many departments now meet regularly with neighborhood groups, allow citizens to participate in citizen police academies, and conduct forums to give citizens a better understanding of the duties of police officers and their actions. Some police departments require and encourage officers to get out of their patrol vehicle and initiate positive contact with the people on their beats (Shusta, Levine, Wong, Olson, & Harris, 2011). All of these efforts are important and relevant to community policing, which helps to remove and diminish negative images of police officers. Citizens are more willing to work hand in hand with police officers who are approachable, engaged, and take ownership of the neighborhoods they serve, which is what community policing is all about.
All roles within local, state, and federal agencies provide what we have made of law enforcement today. The levels within the department are effective in the support of their own and effective uses of personnel. Departments are further finding ways to operate more effectively and make the funding of their departments go further. The different roles and training that go into the officers and the multiple forms of patrolling is a time honored tradition that has adapted over time and offered a safer approach to apprehending today’s criminal.
When you think of police what does it mean to you? The responsibility of a police officer is to protect the public and to serve the community. New police officers work with the general duty as patrol divisions, that provides a range of experiences and assignments.
