Singing for Love

The billboard U.S ranking rank in 1987 the song “Forever And Ever, Amen” by Randy Travis as peak position number one in the category of country singles, and in 2009 the song “Best I Ever Had” by Drake as the number one in category of hot hip-hop songs. ” Forever And Ever, Amen” (Randy), the singer sang about a girl for whom he has a great affection, while in “Best I Ever Had” (Drake), Drake sang and complemented his girl whom he want back. Although the songs “Forever And Ever, Amen” by Randy and “Best I Ever Had” by Drake both talk about love and where very popular in different era, they have many differences in the ways they express their message, how their music sound,

and how they coordinate their lyrics with the video.
Even though both artists sang about their loved one in their music, they use a differ approach to announce and emphasize their feeling in different ways. Drake in his song tried to paint himself as a famous person whom girls come and talk to. Then he emphasize that this song is not for all girl who will think that the song for them rather it is for his girl whom he was in relationship with ”You know a lot of girl be… thinking my songs about them, but this is not to get confused, this one for you…” (Drake). Moreover, he beg the girl to come back otherwise he will do whatever it take to get her back as he said, “T want this forever, I swear I could spend whatever on it”. One the other hand, Randy begin his song by highlighting the impression that his girl may have about him as he said, “You may think that I am talking foolish[.] You’ve heard that I’m wild and I’m free” (Randy), and he continue by promising that he is no longer the same guy she used to know “I’m going to love you forever, forever and ever, amen” (Randy). Both songs show a journey for getting your love back, but they used different approach to make their point.
Another key difference between the two songs is the how the two music sounds. First, the two songs have different background instruments. In the song “Forever And Ever, Amen” which is a country music has many background instruments that is involve to produce the song. During a country music performance, a person can be award that at a certain points the singer will make a little pause while the sound of the Accordion, Bass, Guitar still playing. As a result, it is frankly impossible for a country music artist alone to perform a show. However, Drake’s song “Best I Ever Had”, which is a rap music, use only a beat. Second, they differ in their word choice. Randy sings in a clear thought by expressing fully and slowly his words, but Drake in his song used many informal word and phrase, which can reflect into 2009’s rap music and lifestyle. When Drake said, “My shirt ain’t got no stripes but I can make your p** whistle” (Drake), which can really seem an insult for a person to listing to it. Since many people are not trying to listen but to just hear the music, it can be understand the reason that this song became popular in 2009. In contract, Randy only used formal word, which can be unsurprising because of the time the song was sang. Nevertheless, the differences between the sound and word of the two music can be perfectly understandable since they are not the same genre, and they came from different era.
Not only the two song differ through their message and sound but also the analogy they used to match the songs and the video.

Into “Forever And Ever, Amen” by Randy, the producer of the video used a wedding scenario to match with the lyric. During the ceremony, they show old people, young, and even children who are doing some activities. These activities really match with the lyric. For instance, when Randy said, “As long as old men sit and talk about the weather” (Randy), they show old man sat on one side and are taking between them. Furthermore, when he said, “But honey, I don’t care, I ain’t in love with your hair [, ] if it all fell out, well, I’d love you anyway”(Randy), video shows an old woman kissing her husband’s bald. This scene and others really go in parallel with the lyrics. On the contrary, the video of Drake’s song has almost nothing to do with the lyric of song. By listing to the song or reading the lyric, it is frankly clear that he is talking about a girl whom he loves very much, but in the music video he is playing a role as a team of women’s basketball coach. For example, when he said, “You know that I’m working I be there soon as I make it home” (Drake), it implies that is talking to one person. Further then, he adds, “You the fuckin’ best You the best I ever had” (Drake); however, in the video he is complementing his team which is really poor. Truly, the video of these two music present the diversity held by these two singer to relies their message

toward their fans.
On the whole, Randy Travis’ song “Forever And Ever, Amen” and Drake’s song “ Best I Ever Had” used a very distinctive approach to forward their message, how their music will resonate across their followers, and the analogy they used to match their lyric with the vide.

The differences in the two song show that there are many differences between music in the 1980s and 2000s, especially, if the two music is not from the same genre. Although these two song differ in persuasion and the moment in which they were written, they are all meaningful for their audience that appreciates their

works.
