Food allergy testing
Description:
Food allergy testing is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms using a number of methods. There are some tools which a doctor may use to determine which substance is causing the allergy on a particular body part.
Necessity to conduct the test:
Allergy test are done to determine the object that may be responsible to cause an allergic reaction to a person. The reasons which may call for a test are:
“Food allergies”
“contact dermatitis”
“Penicillin allergy”
“Angioedema and hives”
Symptoms that are not easily controlled with medications like ‘Allergic rhinitis and asthma’
History, to detect the potential allergens (the substance suspected to have caused the allergy)
It may start with the first visit one had with doctor when first allergy symptoms appeared. It will then be followed up with a physical examination and a history. A physician may ask about the kind of food intake when the symptoms began or what changes have been experienced in the environment.
Then the doctor will carry on the diagnostic testing based on the history. History can help to detect the allergens which might have caused the allergy and also the appropriate testing method to be conducted further.
Skin test
It is the most common test, also known as prick test or scratch test. It is used to detect the number of potential allergens at one time. Doctor places a small amount of allergens suspected to cause an allergy on the skin, generally on the forearm, upper arm or the back. Then the skin is pricked, as the name suggest, so that the allergens goes under the skin surface. Then the skin is closely watched for any reaction like swelling or redness. Results are seen within 15 to 20 minutes. If i...

Double-blind test
In this method foods and harmless substances are given in a disguised form. Both the provider and the person being tested are unaware whether it is a harmless substance or food. The identity of the substance is only known by a third party who uses some sort of code. Several sessions of the test is required if more than one material is under investigation. This is practical and useful for patient with mild allergic reactions but needs to be conducted carefully on individuals with severe reactions to foods.
Provocation
In this test the person is exposed to a suspected allergen under controlled circumstances. It may be included in the diet or by breathing in the allergen. This should be done only by a doctor as it may provoke severe allergic reactions.
Introduction: Someone in a restaurant has suddenly fallen ill and a mystery powder has been discovered with the victim. As the chief investigator, your duty is to identify the mystery substance through a lab. In this lab, it will consist of five known compounds and one unknown compound. Your job is to distinguish which one out of the five substances is the mystery powder. To figure out the mystery matter you will have to compare their physical and chemical properties and match them with the appropriate compound. Furthermore, you will compare their reactions with water, universal indicator, vinegar and iodine solution to discover what the mystery powder is.
* It was almost impossible to tell when the Alka-Seltzer tablet had dissolved, each time the experiment was done. This was a huge problem for the experiment as this could have totally caused problems to the experiment. A special type of detector apparatus, which bleeped when the correct amount of Alka-Seltzer tablet dissolved, could improve this, each time the experiment was done.

Following my first sip of milk at the age of one, with the resulting hives and coughing that ensued, I involuntarily joined the community of fifteen million Americans afflicted by food allergies. Living everyday with additional allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish has, out of necessity, sharpened my compulsiveness with ingredients and food preparation, but furthermore has spurred me to intervene on behalf of fellow members in this emerging epidemic. The Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) national organization has been a source of education and support in my own life, and subsequently has aided my efforts to raise awareness among peers, and to nurture my advocacy involvement. Selected as a member of FARE’s Teen Advisory
The radioallergosorbent test (RAST) is an RIA test that allows for the detection and quantification of IgE antibodies. During the test, a possible allergen is bound to insoluble material and a sample of the patient’s blood is added. If the blood sample contains antibodies specific to that allergen, the antibodies will bind to that allergen. Anti-human radiolabeled IgE antibodies are then added and bind only to the antibodies already bound to the insoluble material. The whole sample is then wThe unbound anti-human antibodies are washed away and the level of radioactivity is proportional to the amount of human IgE present in the blood sample.
A food allergy is an exaggerated immune response triggered by a particular protein found in an allergen. Different people have different allergic reactions; ranging from mild to life threatening, whereby an anaphylactic reaction takes place. Symptoms of the allergic diseases may be caused by exposure of the skin to a chemical, of the respiratory system to particles of dust or any other substance, or of the stomach and intestines to a particular food (“What Is Food Allergy?”). In the last few decades, there seems to be an increased media and medical interest on the subject of allergies in general, but mostly on peanut allergies. According to Miranda Waggoner, a Princeton University researcher, no medical research agenda can be found prior to the 1980s. Are peanut allergies really getting more severe and prevalent that the medical community now puts a little more effort into studying the disorder? Or are people just more aware now that word travels faster than ever through the World Wide We...
* even if you're allergic to certain foods, you might be able to eat small amounts of the food without any reaction
True food allergies are rare. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) estimates that only 2% of the adult population of the United States is allergic to foods. Further, only eight foods cause 90% of all food allergic reactions. They are milk, egg, wheat, peanut, soy, tree nuts, fish and shellfish (Food Allergy Network). Many reactions to foods are really intolerance (reaction of the metabolism due to a chemical deficiency) rather than allergy (reaction of the immune system). Many infant allergies, which are later outgrown, are thought to be the result of immature immune systems. However, other allergies become stronger as the person ages and inadvertently becomes more exposed. One report on KCBS radio indicated there may be a link between mothers who ate peanuts during pregnancy and their children’s subsequent allergies.
First the most simple and important step to take is let others know about your allergies, like your friends, family, and doctors. Another step is being extra careful about avoiding foods you eat and are around. It’ll also help to check all food labels and keep track of all the foods you eat throughout your day. Along with letting others know about your food allergy, sometimes when a doctor knows about your allergy he will prescribe a shot or some medicine to carry around with you just in case. Although there is no cure for food allergies to this day, there are alternatives that help people to deal with

Human race is known to have developed numerous allergies to various known and unknown allergens. An extreme allergic reaction which can be “life-threatening”. (Mydr.com.au, 2014) is referred to as Anaphylaxis. It is a “medical emergency”(Lloyd & Sisman,2013).Statistics indicate that maximum deaths occur due to allergic reactions of various medicines. The other causative agents can be insects, food, latex, hair dye, etc(Lloyd & Sisman,2013). The most common trigger to stimulate anaphylaxis among children are food products such as peanuts, dairy, seafood etc. Exposure to any of these allergens can result in severe anaphylactic attack within 20 minutes.(Australian Resuscitation council, 2012).However the doctors discuss the history of symptoms occurring in children suffering with peanut allergy before declaring them to be anaphylactic and prescribing medication. (Unknown, 2014). Symptoms of anaphylaxis may occur in varied forms depending upon the severty of the reaction. For instance in mild cases swelling of lips, eyes or face occurs along with hives, rash, tingling of mouth and vomitting accompanied with abdominal pain. Nevertheless in extreme conditions the former symptoms may be accompanied with noisy breathing, wheezing, hoarseness and unconsciousness. (Lloyd & Sisman,2013).
Caring for a child with food allergies is arduous for parents; from label reading, cross contamination, to stress of family and friends who are not understanding, and the stress of when the allergen is ingested. The immediate response is the most important, but parents and children of food allergic families generally also deal with emotional issues. Although it may seem like a big task, all caregivers, teachers, and health professionals should know how to take care of children with food allergies, watch for signs of anaphylaxis, and know how to treat it for the safety of all children with food allergies.
... reactions have the possibility of being fatal, it is important that all employees know exactly what they are speaking on when communicating information to customers. Overall, the number of people with food allergies and allergens continue to increase, it’s imperative that the government has taken a stand, to create a safer world, for those living with food allergies.
Allergies are especially unique in the medical field because they differ among patients. An allergy is a specific immunologic reaction to a normally harmless substance, one that does not bother most people. People with allergies are often sensitive to many substances. Common allergens that cause allergic reactions include seasonal, outdoor allergens like tree, grass, and weed pollen, and year-round indoor allergens including dust particles, animal dander, and indoor mold. Most people usually can be cured by various treatments.
