A leader to me is someone who guides and helps motivate others in some type of way. However, everyone has their own definition of what a leader is or what attributes a leader carries. To me someone I found as a leader is world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. As a result, the following sections will highlight three reasons to why I see Floyd Mayweather Jr. as a leader, these are; his pride, determination to be the best, and success. First, when trying to determine if someone is a leader you must examine their pride, because with out pride you can not be a leader. Floyd Mayweather Jr. based his whole career off of having a strong pride, from the amateurs to the pros he displayed a strong pride. One way he displayed his pride in his amateur
career is during the Olympics when he was just 17 and lost the fight by unanimous decision, in which the whole crowd disagreed, and believed he was cheated. Even after being cheated he kept his pride strong and decided to turn pro, showing that nothing could break him proving he had a strong pride. Second, one’s determination plays a huge factor in what that person will go on to do in their career. So soon after becoming a pro and having years of experience and success with his career he approached his manager to try and claim big million dollar pay days like all of the greats before him. Floyds manager Bob Arum did not take him serious, and told him those such pay days do not exist for him. So soon after Floyd bought out his contract from Bob Arum and soon after recorded one of the biggest boxing pay days ever proving him wrong by having the determination to be the best. Third, a leader must have success and I determine success by being the best in the business that you are in. Floyd Mayweather Jr. previously just retired with a perfect 49-0 record in his pro boxing career. Also Floyd retired bringing in seven hundred million dollars in boxing earnings which is the most in boxing history. Success is determined by factors like those if anyone can do it then it is not success. In conclusion, being a leader takes more than just saying or thinking that you are a leader you must show that you are a leader through such things as pride, determination, and success. Leadership is one of those things that are taken for granted. People like Floyd Mayweather show excellent leadership by doing what they like to do and being good at it. He is a leader in my eyes because he shows you how working hard and believing in yourself can take you so far and shows you the benefits of success and motivates you to want to obtain the same which a leader is suppose to do. That is why I believe and see Floyd Mayweather Jr. as a leader in my eyes.
Introduction According to the Oxford Dictionary, a leader is defined as “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2013). Though there is a definition for what a leader is, people still have different ideas about what a leader should be and how he or she should act. There has never been a concrete idea of what a leader is; the only thing we know is that this person is the one in charge of the unit. We look at characteristics of those people we see as leaders and use those attributes to compare other people to see if they are able to be as good as, or even better than, those aforementioned leaders. We have to keep in mind that in different situations, leaders must do different tasks which indicates the need for different qualities.
A leader is defined any many different ways, but one way that pops out the most is defined as the state or position of being a leader. There have been many leaders in this world, but one that has recently came to conquer in her own sport is Katie Ledecky. Katie can be described in four ways, a leader, confident, strong minded, and a world record holder. Katie Ledecky is a woman everyone should look up to, not just her confidence in swimmer but as a person as well and how she dedicates herself to this one particular sport who she puts her heart in.
What is a leader? A leader is someone who takes command and leads an organization or group to success. Anyone can be a leader but in order to become a great leader you have to have to possess certain characteristics. I will be using Odysseus from the Odyssey isas an example of a leader who has suitable characteristics. You also have to know what harmful characteristics a leader may possess to determine if they are good leaders or not.
According to Dictionary.com, a leader is a person who guides or directs a group, but I believe there is so much more meaning to that. It takes key qualities to be a true leader. A leader should be self-motivated, encouraging, ambitious and determined; they should carry as sense of critical thinking and optimism in all that they do. Most imprtantly, Leaders are strategic thinkers; they are constantly thinking about how their ideas, thoughts and actions can affect the world. People who are leaders are visionary people because they look for the "big picture". Before this class, I would have said that there are plenty of synonyms for a leader thinking that words like manager, director, or ruler would suffice. I have learned now that those words don't even come close to the definition of a leader. A leader does things with purpose and has a passion for what they do and who they serve. A manager or director would just want to get the job done without looking at the beauty of it.
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
Leadership can be defined in many ways, but one thing all leaders have in common is determination to get a task done. Although leaders may carry out this action in many different ways they all do what needs to be done in order to reach their goal. Florence Nightingale was willing to gather a group of women and pick up and leave her home to tend to the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War.
What is a leader? Educators and scholars have a definition and recommended traits suitable for the academic arena. Every organization has their own perspective into this matter. The United States (U.S.) military has Field Manuals and Regulations which explicitly describe who and what a leader is. I propose the following description of a leader. A leader is servant to those around them and to the organization. A leader is grounded in morality and possesses a strong values base. A leader has the ability to make those him better and more confident in their abilities. A leader has continued influence inside and outside their organizations. Most importantly, a true leader leaves behind a legacy that stands the test of time. Retired (Ret.)
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
Now here’s the question. What makes a great leader? There’s no actual definition for what makes a Leader. Though there are major description that people has been picking up time through time about what makes a great leader. A great leader has many astounding characteristics such as compassion, enthusiasm, involvement and responsibility. Don’t forget about how a leader is nothing without their supporter. What’s a group without a leader? And what’s a leader without his/her follower? And finally, a great leader is very organized.
Is a leader as defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, merely one who leads - synonymous with a boss? Or something more? I believe that a leader is much more than that and can be defined in any number of ways. In attempting to define a leader personally, I will use both myself and others as examples.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
What makes a leader? Is it power? No. Leadership being able to make people or a group of persons work effective together.
What is a leader? When thinking of this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position. –Brian Tracy. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills come from life experiences, education and employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other leaders. Having a title or high above power does not make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs, knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these great leadership skills, there are
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win".
