I think technology is a key component in the classroom, especially for our students to become prepared for the 21st century. In this course, I learned so much for my 2017-2018 4th graders. I have created four products to increase student engagement with the use of technology. Nearpod and Edpuzzle for two different reading lessons, a QR Code lesson for Social Studies, and a Flipped Classroom lesson for math. These products are interactive, exciting, and resourceful.
Product 1: Nearpod Presentation Nearpod is form of an interactive presentation. The teacher manipulates the students’ screen, and they follow along. Teachers create a slideshow with different features to embed. Teachers can create questions or quizzes, insert a drawing feature,
For most people who have ridden the roller coaster of primary education, subtracting twenty-three from seventy is a piece of cake. In fact, we probably work it out so quickly in our heads that we don’t consciously recognize the procedures that we are using to solve the problem. For us, subtraction seems like something that has been ingrained in our thinking since the first day of elementary school. Not surprisingly, numbers and subtraction and “carry over” were new to us at some point, just like everything else that we know today. For Gretchen, a first-grader trying to solve 70-23, subtraction doesn’t seem like a piece of cake as she verbalizes her confusion, getting different answers using different methods. After watching Gretchen pry for a final solution and coming up uncertain, we can gain a much deeper understanding for how the concept of subtraction first develops and the discrepancies that can arise as a child searches for what is correct way and what is not.
Where ever you live and whatever grade you teach, technology has made it into the lives of teachers and students. Whether it is an ebook, laptop, iPad, computer, or Smartboard, they all have brought teaching literacy to a new level. These tools are not going to leave our classrooms, if anything they will impact the learning at new and higher levels. There will come a day, and I think it will be soon, that every student will have access to their own technology devices at school and at home. As teachers, we need to embrace technology and try and stay ahead of our students if possible.
According to the Flipped Network, “Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter”(FLN, 2014). The Flipped Classroom is also known as inverting the classroom, which means that the events that usually take place in this defined by classroom will now take place outside the classroom and vise versa. Teachers can have students use the plethora of technologies to assist the students by having access to lectures, video presentations, and other materials
According to Flipped Classroom – The Results 85% of students that have a flipped classroom have seen their grades improve (Flipped Classroom – The Results). Having a flipped classroom is doing homework in class and watching videos at home. The videos are based off lessons that are made by the teachers. While the students watch the videos they take notes or after do an activity that goes along with it. A traditional classroom is doing the lessons in class and doing homework at home. Having a flipped classroom helps students academically because they can learn at their own pace, provides more resources, and grades will improve.
This is the first class I have taken that has used the flipped classroom approach, so it was very new to me. Doing the homework on the chapters before doing the material in class was a big thing to get used to, but I felt it helped force me to understand. The effort and time put into teaching yourself material really makes you focus on it more. Though I could not understand everything on my own, which was always resolved in class a few days later. To me the group work helped the most with the flipped classroom concept.
Flipped learning involves leveraging e-learning technologies to provide students with content prior to the lesson so that in the group context more time can be spent in group activities (Johnson and Renner, 2012). This promotes a collaborative learning environment in the classroom (Jarvela, Volet and Jarvenoja, 2010, Stahl, 2012). The aim of flipped learning is to develop an active learning environment within the classroom without sacrificing the coverage of content (Strayer, 2007). The impact is to develop in the student active learning, social learning and creative learning skills (Miltbrandt, 2004).
Flipped classroom defined as (school work at home and homework at school) this means that students can do their school study and their study at home by using technology through the computer or any other device by using the Internet. Flipped classroom is a great instructional strategy and considered one of the types of blended learning that invert the traditional learning environment by delivering instructional contents online outside of the classroom. Aaron Sanns and Jonathan Bergman are the first two teachers who use flipped classroom, they provide supplying absent students with an online lecture they could watch from home or from any place they had access to a computer and the internet including school or local library. It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). It’s amazing how one simple screen can provide everlasting opportunity for learning.
After viewing the video by Wolfram (2010), I believe that as teachers we need to prepare more for using computers. Most of my students have a smartphone. And they use it for almost everything, including using the calculator. “Using new technologies involves time, effort, and a rethinking of instructional approaches.” (Sousa. 2015, p. 129). I learned math in a paper, and I love it, but I feel that today that is not enough for our students. Our students get bored about doing calculation the whole time on a piece of paper. Wolfram (2010) questioned, “Do we really believe that the math that most people are doing in school practically today is more than applying procedures to problems they don 't really understand, for reasons they don 't get?”
Everyone receives information differently and interprets it their own way. Teachers have many ways to teach but few teachers utilize all of the tools required to have every student understand the material, especially when it comes to keeping the students interested in a lesson. One way to keep the students interested in the material is to teach a flipped classroom. A teacher at Civic Memorial High School uses this form of teaching. In this type of class the students go home and watch a YouTube video that the teacher creates. These videos serve as the lessons and when the students are in the classroom they participate in projects and complete worksheets. A flipped classroom technique helps students learn through nearly every method: auditory, literary, visual, and hands-on learning styles.
The new style of teaching that is currently being talked about is the flipped classroom, also referred to as flipped learning. The technical definition for flipped learning is “an approach which direct instruction moves the group learning space to the individual learning space”(Walsh). Theoretically, this should be simple and help the students get help on difficulties with their work in class. In an actual classroom setting, there are several other factors to account for that have been looked over. The main factors are lack of ambitious students who are willing to go the extra step, absence of availability of internet and technology access to some, the lack of work to do in an English composition course due to it becoming out of class work,
Students will identify the correct how to find the area of circles. We are going to do this first by deriving the formula for the area of a circle ourselves. Students use these operations to solve problems. Students extend their previous understandings of finding the area of a shape: This learning goal meets the Common Core Standard CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.G.A.3. The students are going to learn find the area of only the doughnut, excluding the hole in the middle. For the formative assessments during the teaching of this unit, I will keep an observation log, where I note any student progress, whether it be positive or negative. I believe it will be important to record observations any time a student has difficulty with a particular task. For example, if a student has trouble solving the problems with the formulas. to purchase an item, I should write down particular actions, attitudes, and behaviors that stand out, as well as the specific issue. Any time the students are doing independent work, I will monitor the learning activities and record observations.
students prefer technology because they believe that it makes learning more interesting and fun. They especially like laptops and tablets. Subjects that students deem challenging or boring can become more interesting with virtual lessons, through a video, or when using a tablet. Technology occupies an important place within students’ lives. When they are not in school, just about everything that they do is connected in some way to technology. By integrating technology into the classroom, teachers are changing the way they used to teach (lectures six hours a day) and providing students with the tools that will take them into the 21st century. One of the characteristics of the modern classroom is collaboration and technology helps to empower it. With classroom technology students can collaborate with other students and their teachers in and outside of the classroom quickly and easily.
