Flight 571 Argumentative Research Project. Flight 571 is the flight which crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. Approximately 3:30 p.m. on October 13th, the aircraft struck a mountain, losing its right wing. The Uruguayan flight 571 was carrying a rugby team, their friends, family and others when it crashed in the Andes Mountains on October 13th 1972. The plane encountered severe weather conditions and ultimately ended up crashing due to pilot error and navigational issues. The initial crash killed 12 people and left the other 45 passengers injured. They were 11,500 ft above sea level. Five or more people died by the first night, leaving only 40 people dead. When the public learned of these Grizzly circumstances, backlash was immediate and intense. 14 of the survivors to this day are still alive. The survivors of the initial crash had to deal with freezing temperatures and limited food supplies. Some of the survivors said they only had a few bottles of water, candy bars and liquor. The survivors of flight 571 had to go through very hard struggles; many suffered injuries, like broken bones, hypothermia, malnutrition, and starvation.
