The Five Cannons of Rhetoric are an ancient guide the Romans developed. This guide was used for speeches and writing. These Five Cannons are invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Although these Five Cannons were developed many years ago, they still hold to be just as viable today. Initially, invention is the first and most crucial of the Five Cannons. Invention is the step in which the writer brainstorms and develops a topic. Without this step, there would be no speech, which makes it the backbone of every paper. During this step, the writer will consider the audience the speaker is speaking to, so that the speech is effective. If the speaker does not capture the attention of the audience, the speech losing all purpose. …show more content…
This step focuses on the organization of the speech. A speaker would be unwise to start a speech stating all the weaknesses of the argument. The ending of a speech is usually the most memorable because it is the last point the audience hears. Saving the weakest point for the end would not cut it, and would overall make the argument weaker. For these reasons, and many others, the arrangement step is very important. Furthermore, the third step is style. The style of a speech is basically the skill behind the speech. Making sure that the speaker speaks with clarity and uses correct grammar throughout the speech is what this step involves. If the speaker is not clear, the audience may misinterpret the message. And incorrect grammar throughout a speech would make the argument significantly weaker. Moreover, memory is the next step. If a speaker cannot remember the speech, there is no argument that can be made. Memory is crucial in speaking. The goal is not to sound like a robot reciting words off a paper, but to have the ability to communicate each important point the speaker is wanting to relay. Another important part of memory, is having perfect memory of factual information and possible quotes that can be accessed during the

The next is Pathos, using Emotional Apeal in terms of persuading someone or an audience. Then there is Ethos, using moral competence to persuade the audience to trust in what they are saying is true.
Howard Roark’s speech in Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead displays the author's personal philosophy of objectivism. Objectivism is an idea that Ayn Rand had developed and promoted in her works of literature. Objectivism advocated for the rights of individual freedoms such as someone being able to do whatever that person desires with their own creations. In this case, Ayn Rand’s character Howard Roark; who had dynamited his own building . Through Rand’s persuading diction, immense detail, and powerful organization, Ayn Rand takes a stand through a fictional character to promote the idea that an individual should be able to live freely without society or the government scrutinizing him.
The question of what is rhetoric and what does it do has been a question since stories were even being recorded. However, now there are multiply different scholars who believe that they understand what rhetoric is and how to use it. For someone to use rhetoric correctly they must first have a definition of rhetoric that either they have made to fit themselves or they find a previous definition that suits them. In order for me to become an improved rhetor and be able to rhetorical discuss and evaluate pieces of literature or speeches like General Douglas MacArthur’s Farewell address, I must first define rhetoric in how I understand it. Rhetoric is the art of persuasive speaking aimed to sway your audience in a direction that has been chosen by the rhetor. The way in which a citizen uses rhetoric can change over time. The need to argue the same problem is invalid so the need to use the same rhetorical situations is invalid. You can use rhetoric in a multitude of different areas within our life however; we must choose to use it for good or for evil. In order for rhetoric to still be used in speech today one of two things must be true. There must either be a Truth in life and rhetoric or the more likely choice, that rhetoric changes throughout time and situations. You are not trying to change someone’s mind about something however; you are trying to convince them that you are also correct. I will be using multiple pieces of works that are defining rhetoric to support my definition and finish by evaluating General Douglas MacArthur’s Farewell Address using my definition of rhetoric.
Words have power. However, for them to have the desired impact on the audience, some styles have to be incorporated in articulating them out. Orators of the time are best known for their ability to touch people through words. One such person is President Obama. He has a way of making people remember what he has said. This is because; he has styles that he uses in his speech which capture the interest and emotions of the listener. Oppositely, a speaker may want to bring out a certain point, but the choice of technique may impede the passage of such a point to the audience. Basing on this, it is vital for speakers not just to come with word they think are appropriate but also make a choice of the techniques that will influences the delivery of the desired message. Information regarding the styles and techniques utilized by the speaker cannot be gathered unless thee speech is critically analyzed. Accordingly, one of the speeches by President Obama is going to be analyzed.
The rhetorical triangle is an active interaction between the person who is speaking, the audience, and the direction the presentation is going. Without an equal relevance of the three elements pathos, ethos, and logos, a speech can end in an unsuccessful result. However, if all elements correlate in the speech such as in Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, then the result will prove to be effective.
Therefore, there are different kinds of important rhetoric devices that include figurative languages (similes, metaphors, and personifications), irony, and foreshadowing. Similes, metaphors, and personifications are the most common rhetoric devices that authors use. It is used many times in the book Lord of the Flies.
These devices can be applied more effectively by verbal communication. Firstly, face-to-face communication allows speaker to show his persistence, determination, establishing trust and constitute a strong emotional bond on audiences. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is an accurate masterpiece of rhetorical devices. In his speech, he quotes from the Constitution of the United States and builds up his own credibility, refers to the religious and patriotic documents by drawing attention on emotional values of many people. Additionally, he makes some rhythmic repetitions, which enriches the power of his words such as “Let freedom ring from”, “One hundred years later” and “Now is the time”. These strong traditions of verbal communication support political leaders in public speaking.“Anyone who has heard the speeches of Martin Luther King, such as are still available in recorded form will recognize the rhetorical features that lay behind such powerful words.” (Furniss, 2004, P. 88) Speakers who use paralinguistic features and rhetorical devices appropriately can give the message without isolating at the time of oral argument, while understanding the reactions of audiences and leading the
Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, in which there are three forms. Ethos the credibility of the author, Pathos the emotion you create, and logos the logical side of an argument. Many articles and papers use these terms of persuasion to see their side one such document is The Declaration of Independence. The purpose for said document was for the 13 original colonies to declare freedom from the oppressive rule of England.
In Kirby Dick’s influential documentary “The Invisible War,” filmmaker Kirby Dick uses pathos, ethos and logos to gain information and supplementary details to make his point that there is an epidemic of rape in throughout the DOD (Department of Defense) and the fact that military sexual trauma (MST) in the United States military goes unheard, mostly unpunished and needs to be addressed at a higher level.

In the same also different way, the coach in Marshall speech also using pathos when he said “ They don’t know your heart. I do. I’ve seen it. You have shown it to me...You have shown just exactly who you are in here.” This is pathos because the coach bring up how good the team have become. Whether they’re losing or winning, the only thing will matter is no one will have a great heart as the players have. They don’t need to win the championship to show that they’re the best, they just need to show how much passion they have with football to show that they’re the best team. The coach also said: “ When you take that field today, you’ve gotta lay that heart on the line, men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you’ve got in your body, lay it on the line until the final.” He doesn’t put pressure on the players that they have to win, he speaked how he feel, he speaked from his heart, he just wanted that when the team take the field today, they just need to put all their effort and passion on the field.
If rhetoric, with all its conventions and rules, is an art as well as a technique, then how can it develop in the future (as arts must do) and thus survive as contemporary art?
