Loung Ung, the protagonist of the book First They Killed My Father, and her family moved about and lived in several places in Cambodia as well as many other places outside of their hometown. Loung and her family lived in the little town of Phnom Penh at the beginning of the novel in the 1970s. Loung and her family evacuated Phnom Penh in 1975 due to the upcoming bombing in their town, and they decided to temporarily settle in Ro Leap, an internment camp in Cambodia, for the following two years (1975–1977). The family was put through great abuse at this camp. They were forced to perform hard physical labor, and famished to the point that there were visible bones and little fat left on their bodies. There was nothing happening in America that would put families in jeopardy, unlike what was happening in Cambodia. This demonstrated to me that everyone's past varies based on their location. From the way the people behaved and their faith, I also learned a great deal about the Ung Family and Cambodian culture. By the end of the novel, for instance, it was mentioned that Loung and her siblings were largely Buddhists, so she was a bit surprised when they learned they needed to be Christians in order to travel to America, given how accustomed to Buddhist practices they were. Taking into account that I am a Christian, this taught me that not everyone is from the same culture as well as that culture is different worldwide. To add, this taught me that there are many different and widely held cultures and ideas outside of the US. What were some major themes the author wrote about? In this book, the author addressed a wide range of significant issues that provided evidence for an extensive amount of concepts.
