Becoming a social worker is dependent on numerous factors, one of which being education. “A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) degree is the most common minimum requirement to qualify for a job as a social worker, however, majors in psychology, sociology, and related fields may be sufficient to qualify for some entry-level job” (Chao & Orr, 162). Many people when pursuing the goals of being a social worker, however, are most interested in jobs in public agencies and/or having their own practices. “A master’s degree in social work (MSW) is necessary for positions in health and mental health settings and typically is required for certification for clinical work” (Chao & Orr, 162). One’s level of school is not the only thing employers are focusing on when looking to hire social workers. Along with one’s education, a social worker must have “a broad liberal arts base which includes a knowledge of the social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, political science, and economics) to provide explanations about the nature of human society and the human condition” (Johnson, 48). There are many more skills that are just as essential, if not more beneficial, to the employer as well as client.

Personally, I’ve never had any contact with a social worker gratefully, but they do not have a great reputation. Social workers are not known for coming into people lives when everything is going well. Professions that help people have always caught my interests. It wasn’t until college however, when I gained a full knowledge of what social workers did. I have a passion for helping kids and wanting to do more for them. Volunteering has been a big part of my life and is where, my passion grew to become a juvenile attorney. Throughout school that is what my mind was set on. Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. In that time they hosted over 250 children from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a child, I spent much of my time at my grandparents house and was exposed to the multiple aspects of the foster care system. I became close with the social workers who came to my grandmother 's house and when it came time for me to make a career choice, they all discouraged me from becoming a social worker. Despite their warnings I graduated with my Bachelor 's of Social Work from Saint Louis University in 2013 and began to work on my Master 's in Social Work in August of 2014.
The one thing I have always known I'd like to do with my life is to help people. I'm applying for to job shadow a social worker because essentially making a difference in people's lives is the most important aspect of a future career to me, than any other. This is certainly an area I would like to gain more knowledge of. My reasons for wanting to become a Social worker are quite varied, the main one being to assist people in realising their potential and helping them reach their goals, and at this stage of my life I believe the experiences I have gained are extremely transferable in terms of working with the general public; but overall I can now offer the Social work profession and its clients a committed and caring attitude.
Most of my fear and hesitation comes from the reactions I get from my family about the profession and their interpretation of what a Social Worker is and does. I know that the tasks that lies ahead of me is many and honestly at times I feel a bit overwhelmed. What helped me to manage this is the realization that although social work is a broad field there is specializations within it and my only obligation is to master my own branch and not the entire field. Before graduating one of the biggest fears was wondering what would happen after graduation. Only having theoretical knowledge in Human Resources just isn’t enough in today’s competitive job market. As luck would have it, during a Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) meeting, this opportunity was made available to the members of SHRM. This was an excellent starting point in order to gain work related experience therefore an application, resume and cover letter was submitted to the manager of employment and compensation. Out of all the candidates that applied and interviewed for this position, I was chosen for this position.
