Perhaps the most famous social worker from the United States, Jane Addams once said,” This guy is a bastard. He took advantage of my daughter.” Social work allows you to experience many different sides of life; it gives you the opportunity to embrace life to the fullest, and the chance to influence people’s lives for the better. Becoming a Social worker will allow me to get involved with the community and to make a difference. It will shape you into a person that can do anything, and will make a permanent mark on your heart because of the experiences and people you come into contact with. I have faced many challenges throughout my life, but have always been able to manage somehow and rise above them, on the basis of strength and has made me a stronger person. The importance is that I feel I have become self-insured, and can be an asset to the social work profession. As a social worker I will be able to help make other lives better by relating to some of their personal situations, helping kids cope with physical and mental abuse, by providing child protection services. People often benefit from hearing from others who have been in similar situation. As a child I was sexually abused, put in foster care and adopted. Being abused will help me to better relate to children who are going through the same things and I will be able to provide empathy from personal experience. Looking back now I believe this is where I gained my values and beliefs, my foster mom being an important role model. Her influence was the beginning of my need to enter a caring profession, feeling a sense of obligation to support and care for others. As a social worker, I will be able to take kids out of dangerous or abusive situations and place them in a... ... middle of paper ... ...ts from my life experiences have made me understand how I came to develop their beliefs and values, as Crawford and Walker (2003) informs us, " Social workers need to understand their life course development and the role this has had on the values and beliefs that have developed it. According to ethics social workers are to support people in need, and deal with social problems. The experiences have made me the person I am, and using my skills, I believe my personal experience has changed me, makes me more open to new ideas, and even though I am well aware of the past, I have dealt with it, which will allow me to help others overcome the same situations. As a social worker, I will be able to improve the lives of others related to some of their personal situations, helping children from physical and mental violence by providing protective services for children.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
My interest in social work started when I realized I was the person that my family and friends would come to for support. I found that I liked to listen to others and help them get through difficult times. Pursuing a career in social work will allow me to reach the community and support those with no resources available to them. Social work is the platform that will allow me to improve the lives of others and transform their futures. Social work to me means supporting my community and discovering ways to educate and give resources to those that
Most of the time, you can help and see people succeed and overcome their traumas. It is important to find the good in the job and not always the bad situations. My views and beliefs about violence against women has changed drastically over the past few months. I thought about violence as only physical before this class, but I now understand that there are many different forms of violence and severities of it, as well. Learning about social workers and their required tasks, has made me realize how hard it would be to listen to peoples’ traumatic experiences and not feel completely overwhelmed. However, in the end, the work would be worth the anguish because of the complete satisfaction of helping to save peoples’ lives. Despite all of the violence and hatred that goes on, there are people, like social workers, who are there to make the difference the world
My interest in becoming a social worker started at a very young age. I remember always possessing the desire to help people who were in need and have frequently being the person who others have approached when faced with difficult situations. Often, I felt as if listening was not enough. I remember feeling unequipped to help them. When I spoke about this career choice with some of the big influences in my personal life, I was told no matter what situation I have ever been faced with I have always managed to handle myself appropriately in what were, sometimes, delicate situations. Whether these situations were with complete strangers or people I have known for years, mediation, has been something that has come naturally to me. In addition to
My interests lie in working with children/young people and families, I believe my natural desire to want to help and enable others in vulnerable and difficult situations are qualities that will suit a career in social care work. Growing up, it was instilled in my head that a social worker was a person who took children away from their parents. I do not remember where or how that negative stereotype of a social worker was first imprinted in my mind. It was discouraging and upsetting to hear adults talk about the social work profession with a negative connotation. Today, our society is fixed on placing everyone in a box. Forgetting that we are more than what we are labeled. Blocking us from growing as a person. Every day, our experiences shape our thoughts, ethical values, characteristics, and how we view ourselves in society. It is without a question that my life experiences and relationships have influenced me to the path of the social work profession.
The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. In these younger years with the assistance of my parents, my love for others allowed me to help other teenagers in crisis, often providing shelter, advice, monetary assistance and a listening
Becoming a social worker would be the greatest and rewarding achievement I could ever accomplish. The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. (Australian Association of Social Workers, 2016, para. 2).The area I’m interested to work in is Child Abuse and young people with disability because of personal experience. One of my major inspiration through her quote is (Mother Teresa 2001) “If you can 't feed a hundred people, then feed just one". I connect with this quote because I know I can never change the whole world but I can make a different in one-person life. After I completed year 12 of high school education I wasn’t sure is social work was for me. I decided to do a diploma of community service to get more idea of what social work do. Studying a diploma of community motivated me more to pursue a career as a social worker. This essay will reflect on my past experience and the things motivated me the most to become social work practitioner. This reflection will discuss the values, beliefs as social worker.
Being a social worker entitles being able to identify those who are in need and helping them to respond to particular crisis such as abuse of a child and or spouse and helping the clients to get use to certain changes in their lives. For example, social workers promote change, problem solving in human relationships and they also enhance the well-being of individuals. To become a great social worker one must first have a heart. A social worker should care about an individual’s well-being and have problem solving skills to be able to help or guide an individual to get help with the everyday stresses of being in bad situations financially as well as mentally and psychologically. Being that social workers deal with individuals that do not necessarily have it easy in life, an individual should come into their life with open arms, ready to accept all the flaws and baggage this individual may have. Life is not easy for anyone, but we all have to remember an individual somewhere has it worse than most.
For years, when I thought of Social Workers, I imagined a person coming into a client’s home and taking their kids away for neglect. Later, I found out that social workers could go into so many dimensions, such as clinical social workers, case mangers, and even administrative positions in agency settings. Furthermore, I realized that I was maturing into an adult. For example, when I began telling people of my decisions to become a social worker, a lot ...
The career of a social worker is not as attractive to many because it’s not a field where you can make a lot of money right away. I want to make good living once I enter the real world, but I also want to have a purpose in life. I have always loved to help people. I am a very nurturing person and have always been passionate about helping others. I want to be able to make a difference in my community and the lives of other people. I also want to be a social worker because I want a career where I can have some diversity. I do not want a job where I must be confined to a desk to perform my job daily. Each day will be a different challenge as a social worker. I need to be involved in a field where I will not be bored and pushed to resolve the many
It takes a very distinct individual to be a social worker as this field of study is quite brutal quite frequently. Social Work is enormously demanding emotionally, the pay is average, the daily challenges that must be met, often the work conditions are odd; but these are all responsibilities that I am willing to endure. Having seen and been through a great deal myself, this career seems feasible. I am quite passionate about people and strongly believe that this career will allow me to be rewarded by impacting the lives of others in a positive way. There seems to have been a need for social work since the Industrial Revolution, if not since the dawn of time, and it has always taken passionate individuals
Growing up in a foster home and later on being adopted, my past consists of a life that was placed off, what I thought to be its intended course. The derailment granted me with a different perspective on life and also newfound knowledge and respect for social workers and their contributions to society. Individuals whom were in foster care with me and interactions with foster children from my previous employment opportunity at a daycare, influenced me to steer in the direction of becoming a social worker. As I constantly reached new levels of maturity while progressing in life from exposure through real life experiences, these events created a profound knowledge base in relation to social justice. I have witnessed and ascertained wisdom
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
