As Bill Copeland said, “the trouble with not setting a goal is that you can spend your time running up and down the field and never score”. This quotation is applicable because, simply stated, goals propel each and every person forward. Setting a goal gives people the opportunity to not only excel but live life to the fullest. When a person takes the time to sit down and write out goals, it ensures their life is geared towards getting the most out of every moment. As I have matured, the idea of physically writing out my own goals has become more prevalent especially in regards to school. In order for me to get the most out of my education, I have set difficult yet still attainable goals that will challenge me more than any year past. Nonetheless, …show more content…
Since freshman year, I have strove to receive first honors every quarter. Through 12 quarters at Elder I have been recognized 12 times for achieving first honors. Now I find myself in senior year and although ‘senioritis’ is prevalent the goal stays the same, first honors every quarter. However, this year will be significantly more difficult to keep the discipline required to achieve first honors for two reasons. First, I am taking more difficult classes than I ever have. Second, since it is senior year most people tend to putt off grades yet I will not conform to this. My plan is not to work as hard as I have in years past; it is to work even harder because when people slack off it gives me the opportunity to move up in class ranking. This goal is difficult yet attainable and through hard work and determination I will achieve first honors 16 quarters out of 16 in my career at Elder. However, this is not my only goal for senior …show more content…
I was not a student fortunate enough to receive any scholarships for high school and because of that I have set a goal that would alleviate much of my parents stress and that is receive at least half off tuition for college. I have worked relentlessly at school, the ACT, and my college essay. With that hard work, I am determined to receive retribution. If I am able to achieve this goal, it will ease my parents’ stress of paying for my college. I am already fortunate enough they paid for my high school and grade school, but now it is time for me to do something for them and I will receive scholarships. I am willing to spend hours on hours searching for any sort of financial aid available. This will be the most difficult goal, but the challenge is what will force me to work
Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. That is, until the fact set in that I was going to have to pay for this education that I desired. I knew that with my busy schedule, I would be unable to make enough money while only working a few hours here and there. I was beginning to lose sight of hope. Then one day I talked to my counsellor about what I could do and he pointed me towards dozens of scholarships that I could apply for. The exigence or purpose
During the period between medieval to the western modern there were many different areas addressed at this time. Each time period had a variety of systems to benefit their population. The church was weakened by internal conflicts as well as by disagreements between church and state. The rising of the bourgeois class, and secular ideals succeeded in the growing towns and gave support to the expanding monarchies. However, there are many parts to each area of social, political and religious.
I know that through my hard work and dedication I can make my goals a reality. However, it may not be possible without these Scholarships. While my parents will help me in any way they can, I am hoping that my hard work and dedication to my studies pays off. I am a very self-driven individual who will accomplish any goal I set my mind on achieving. I am also aware of how without scholarships I may face a financial setback. I am hoping that through the help of scholarships I will be able to achieve all my goals in a timely
For instance, Rudy’s goal was to play football at Notre Dame. He focused on it and he practiced football every day and watched every single Notre Dame football there was. He even succeeded in a part he didn’t usually succeed in. Grades. Goal setting, to me, is a bit like planning. For instance, you plan what you’re going to be doing for that day, so basically you are setting a goal for that day. It helps you organize and it helps you not waste your time and it also helps your mindset become positive because you know that you’ve got something to reach and that you’re not in the world for no reason, you have a
During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
In most situations, goals are a great way to achieve success and what we want. Latham and Locke also discover that there are five things that make a goal more likely to be achieved: “... clarity, challenge, commitment, measurable progress, and task complexity... the best way to stay motivated and be successful is to set goals, but the TYPE of goals you set—and the way you set them—matters to whether you will achieve them”
Setting goals is an important tool for achieving success, but setting goals can be a difficult task. An article from Otylia Benson called “The Theory and Power Behind Goal Setting” uses a study from researchers Latham and Locke to prove the correct way to set goals is to, “shoot for the stars when you are setting goals, but not just for any star—that one specific star over there!”(8). Latham and Locke’s study showed that goals should be specific and measurable, which is also proven in this article as Benson states, “Ultimately, Goal Setting Theory says that the best way to stay motivated and be successful is to set goals, but the TYPE of goals you set—and the way you set them—matters to whether you will achieve them”(10). Benson proves the importance of goal setting, and shows that how well the goal is set determines if the goal will be
Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. A world-class engineering student woul...
During high school my teachers lectured my classmates and I on goal making. I specifically remember my health teacher using the SMART method; this says goals must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound. Even though I had a great resource to make smart goals for myself, I never took the time to construct a game plan. Entering the vast new world of college, I want to improve myself by keeping several goals in mind each month, week, and day. My process starts by creating intellectual, psycho-emotional, physical, and social goals to work towards in my four years of college.
There are many benefits to making goals. Before you make a goal, it is essential to realize why it is important that you are doing this. First, when forming goals, make yourself aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your strengths is empowering, however, the feeling may not be the same when facing weaknesses. Many people view weaknesses as a bad thing, but it just shows where more work and focus is needed. It is imperative that both are recognized. If they are not recognized, the plan made to achieve the goal will not be as effective because you will spend the same amount of time on the strengths and weaknesses. If you acknowledge both, less time will be needed on the strengths, and more time can be spent on the weaker areas. Making goals also gives you something to work for and a guide along with it. This guide will help form a path to achieve the goal. This will not only help with goal making, but it will be very beneficial with other things in life because it also brings responsibility. Responsibility can become rather frightening and overwhelming when forming goals, but with responsibility brings a sense of accomplishment, and after attaining the goal, a sigh of relief will overcome the anxiety. If responsibility is a weakness, then one thing that can be done to help with the workload is separating wishful thinking ...
Setting goals is the most important thing you can do in your life. Without goal's you are going to have no direction, no ambition to be successful, no drive to stay in school, and trouble finding a career that will provide for you. Without these three things, achieving your goals is going to be one of the toughest tasks in the years to come.
[I] We set goals to push ourselves as much as we can, but limits are set into place and it is important not push too hard. [J] We must also decide in which areas we are going to set our goals and which ones are more crucial. [K] Prioritizing goals is one of the most salient things to think about,” [You need to] figure out what domains of life you want to achieve goals in, and what's most important between these”(Wilner 2). [L] Be smart and sensible when setting goals to make it easier on yourself thus allowing encouragement rather than discouragement. [M] To make
I have always wanted to make good grades but I never really set any goals but, then I realized that setting academic goals are way more important than people realize . I then started to set goals like my sophomore year of high school after I did that it really helped me focus on my future and what I wanted for myself. My goals I think pushed me so much more academically they opened my eyes a little bit more. One Goal I set was to graduate High school with a Core 40 diploma, which I did, so that is one goal down and a bunch more to go. My senior year I started applying to college but my main goal was to make into Saint Mary-of-the Woods and when I received my acceptance letter I was ecstatic. So far, I am still trying to figure out my academic goals for college but, I do know for sure that I want to succeed in every single way that I can so I can make a better future for myself. A goal that I made this year is to make the dean’s list every single time, for this I will study so hard for every test, do all of my homework, and ask questions when I have them and maybe even getting a tutor. This challenge will probably be really tough but I believe that I can do it if I put my mind to it, and I tend to be a very determined
In life, there are many things that you may want to achieve. To me achieving my goals was something that made me feel exhilarated and very proud of myself. Even though you may want to reach your goal, it may not happen the first time you try. You may have to try multiple times. It may not always feel good after you fail, but you should always get up and try again. I learned this lesson in seventh grade, when realized how much harder I needed to try if I wanted to be at the skill level needed for eighth grade.
In setting a goal, you set up a grand goal and then you break it down into smaller goals. This helps you to further monitor your progress on a smaller scale and helps you stay motivated and focused because each time you achieve one of the smaller goals, it keeps you inspired to achieve the grand goal. Set goals that are definite with a well-known target to achieve, always giving yourself a specific time-stamped to achieve your goals. However, ensure that your goals and time lines set are realistic otherwise you will end frustrated chasing castles in the
