The situations that have the most significant change on you and your fellow firefighters are the incidents that have the highest risk and lowest frequency. There is a direct link between human behaviors and risk management. This paper will aim to explain with factual evidence the links and how firefighters will constantly be subject to risk amongst firefighters in the years to come. The problems that are associated with risk management and human behavior is that it has only just been integrated into the fire service since 1987, therefore firefighters and other emergency services haven’t caught up to the movement of incorporating it into all aspects of the fire and emergency services. This can be seen on websites like Fire Near Miss and in Firefighter …show more content…
Within the fire service we are required to be exposed to potential risky exercises that could lead us to be vulnerable during and long after the initial incident. According to NFPA 1500, Standard for Fire Department Occupational Safety & Health Program, defines risk as “the potential negative impact of the exercise of vulnerability, considering both the probability and the impact of occurrence.” The term risk has come to be used interchangeably, in widely contrasting settings. One thing still remains true, that no matter the association with the word risk, it will always be subject to negative …show more content…
Risk compiles two concepts: the frequency of an event and the severity of that same event. When the frequency of an event is estimated, it is on how often an event has occurred or is likely to occur. With that being said there are two types of frequency: high and low. High frequency means something will probably occur in most circumstances. Low frequency means something might occur at some time. The second part of the model is severity. Severity is the potential loss to an individual person or department made possible by the identified risk. When we apply both frequency and severity we achieve a risk matrix or frequency severity model. This allows us to conceptualize the event, thus allowing us to establish priorities for risk management actions. To proceed with identifying risk we create a process called risk
When it comes to safety most people think they are safe, and they have a true understanding on how to work safe. Human nature prevents us from harming ourselves. Our instincts help protect us from harm. Yet everyday there are injuries and deaths across the world due to being unsafe. Fire safety education is a crucial aspect of fire prevention. The general public needs to know how big of a threat fire is to them and how they can do things in their everyday lives to improve their safety, as well as preventing the threat of fire to begin with. The commission also realized that it was critically important that people know how to properly act once a fire has started. It is important that people have the knowledge to act quickly, safely, and effectively. When people don’t understand fire they can react in many negative ways such as panicking, not evacuating effectively, or by trying to fight a fire that they are not going to be able to extinguish. All these human reactions can decrease safety and end with tragic results. In the commission’s report they approximate that nearly 70 percent of all building fires were due to people acting carelessly because they did not understand the fire dangers that were present. The commission cited studies like one conducted in southeast Missouri. In the southeast Missouri community, a huge emphasis was put into public fire safety education because the fire death rate of the community was much higher than the national average. After increasing fire safety education in the community it was no surprise that the rate of deaths and injuries decreased

Mental health in the fire service is an upcoming problem, but has been occurring for years without firefighters even knowing it. Specifically post-traumatic stress disorder known as PTSD and firefighter suicides are the main issues that have a large impact in the fire service. This outline will lay out the main points that are a result, impact, or other subjects in relation to the two main issues above. Firefighter deaths are rising rapidly, members of the fire service need to be educated on PTSD and suicide to provide treatment before another devastating event occurs in result of the issues effects.
A fireman is mentally strong. There are times when a fireman must make a split second decision, which may save a life or could possible place someone’s life in further danger. While making these decisions, there are many thoughts going through a fireman’s head. For example, is it safe to go inside this burning building? Should I give this medication? While searching a burning building, Should I go right or left? What is the best way to ventilate the smoke from this building? Each of these questions requires mental strength. Also, mental strength is required when tragedy occurs. The fireman must be able to overcome the stress of the tragedy to continue his job.
Every year communities struggle each year around the nation with issues of life safety. In 2012, the nation’s fire departments responded to 31,854,000 responses that resulted in the deaths 0f 2,855 civilians and injuring 16,500 causing an estimated $12,427 million dollars in damage. (United States Fire Administration, 2014) These incidents put at risk 345,950 career and 783,300 volunteer firefighters that resulted in the deaths of 81 individuals (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2013) and nearly 70,000 reported injuries. ( Karter & Molis, 2013) These numbers represent incidents that are determined to be in the line of duty but do not take into consideration the long-term health risk issues that may develop. Evidence shows that he hazards associated with Fire and Emergency Services are consistent across the board whether paid or volunteer and jeopardize the lives and health of each individual, placing administrative and physical control measures reduces this risk to firefighter within an organization. While it is impossible to eliminate the hazards firefighters face, it is important to identify these hazards as the first step in reducing the potential for loss of life and wellbeing both physically and mentally.

The running theme within the readings for this week revolved around the topic of intersectionality. Through these readings, it is clear that social categories and their issues cannot be addressed or discussed as individual issues. For a clear discussion of issues of gender, sexuality, class, and race to be successful, there needs to be recognition of how the issues are interconnected. In This Bridge Called My Back, there were personal account regarding the link and association between social issues and experiences of discrimination. In This Bridge Called My Back, it mentions how Third World Women are especially vulnerable to the "many-headed demon of oppression" (El Mundo Zurdo 195).

Firefighting has been a thankless job since the beginning. It started out as a group of people with one objective; to extinguish a fire. They did not worry about the consequences or repercussions from not having any personal protective equipment. The equipment to help keep all firemen safe has drastically changed from being non-existence to the upmost importance. Without safety equipment, firemen cannot perform their job to the best of their ability. Firemen use turnout gear which has three major parts; helmet, jacket, and SCBA.
