Mastering fine motor skills is a very important process needed for physical and cognitive development. It is during early childhood that most children develop these skills, however there are many children that do not. A young child’s fine motor skills are developed through a vast array of activities that aide the child in doing little things such as grasping a toy as an infant, and buttoning buttons as a toddler or tying shoes when they are a preschooler. Fine motor development is the development of the small muscles in the hands and fingers. Many crucial daily activities depend on strong motor skills, such as writing, using eating utensils and getting dressed, among other things. Adam’s closed-loop theory suggests that there are two important components to his theory and the first one is the perpetual trace. Adams states that in the beginning when learning a new skill, the perpetual trace is weak (Mazur, 2012), for example, when an infant is learning to grasp a toy, at first he will finger it, trying to get the feel of it, then he will try and wrap his fingers around it, eventually he will pick it up, just to drop it without even realizing he was holding it in the first place. After several attempts of the infant going through the perpetual trace, the second important component to Adam’s theory begins to take place and the infant will have mastered picking up and playing with the toy. Creating a strategy to help strengthen fine motor skills of a young child who is developmentally delayed can be done by doing activities such as having the child mimic one’s own actions such as using the pincer grasp to pick up small pieces of food or otherwise which will help the child learn to hold a pencil when it comes time for that. Playing simple video games is another activity that strengthens these skills because the act of playing the video game promotes hand-eye coordination which improves the ability to use the small muscles of the hand to be able to work the remote control needed to play the game. Subject engages in many physical activities and the objective physical description is healthy. I have seen the subject using gross motor skills in activities such as riding a bike, playing basketball, soccer, and tag. These exercises are gross motor because they use large muscles like those in the legs, and arms. I have also seen the subject displaying fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are the opposite of gross motor, instead of utilizing big muscles they utilize small muscles like the ones found in the fingers. When they engage in play activities most of their early years, they learn to delay gratification and to prioritize their goals and actions. Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), also referred to as dyspraxia, is a motor disorder. The condition is characterized primarily by “lack of co-ordination/poor co-ordination,” “motor-difficulties/impairment,” “planning difficulties,” and “organizational difficulties” (Kirby, Davies, & Bryant, 2005, p. 124). DSM-IV-TR criteria for Developmental Coordination Disorder includes: (1) “marked impairment in the development of motor coordination,” (2) “significant interfere[nce] with academic achievement or activities of daily living,” and (3) the absence of “a general medication condition” or “Pervasive Developmental Disorder” (Lingam, Hunt, Golding, Jongmans, Emond, 2009, p. e695). Furthermore, in the presence of mental retardation, motor difficulties must be considered excessive in nature (Lingham et al., 2009, p. e695).

Physical and motor development are two similar but different areas that describe child development. Physical development encompasses all of the various changes a child's body goes through. Those changes include height, weight, and brain development. Motor development is the development of control over the body. This control would involve developing reflexes such as blinking, large motor skills like walking, and fine motor skills like manipulating their fingers to pick up small objects like Cheerios. It is important to objectively study physical and motor development in children to gain knowledge on what characteristics are considered typical for each age and stage of development. This will enable me to be aware of when a child or children are developing at an irregular pace, and devise recommendations or find experiences and other resources that can aid in stimulating their development and to work towards closing achievement gaps. The definition of hand-eye coordination is the capability of the vision system to coordinate the information received through the eyes to control and direct the hands on how to function.
