My subject is a nine year old female. She attends the fourth grade which is average for her age. Her height is four feet three inches, and her weight is eighty-five pounds. According to www.disabled-world.com average height for a nine year old female is “47 inches” or three feet nine inches, and the average weight is “63.8 Ibs.” This would mean that she is above average in both weight and height. Being above average in weight does not necessarily mean that a person is obese, it just means they are above average in weight for the population, and in my subjects situation off by just a little. In terms of BMI(Body Mass Index) my subject scored 23, which is in the normal range. This means that my subject is considered healthy in terms of weight, and because of this has a lower chance of getting diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure,heart disease, and high cholesterol levels.
Subject engages in many physical activities and the objective physical description is healthy. I have seen the subject using gross motor skills in activities such as riding a bike, playing basketball, soccer, and tag. These exercises are gross motor because they use large muscles like those in the legs, and arms. I have also seen the subject displaying fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are the opposite of gross motor, instead of utilizing big muscles they utilize small muscles like the ones found in the fingers. Examples of fine motor are calligraphy, drawing a picture, playing with play dough, and playing with cards. Both types of activities are good for the physical development, and health of a child. Our class has been reading a book called “Brown Girl Dreaming” for the past two weeks. The author, Jacqueline Woodson talks about her life growing up. For example she talks about how her mom and dad divorced when she was young. She talks about how she moves to Greenville and how her grandpa is like a dad figure, and how her mother came back with a pale skinned baby after she went to New York. Character traits make up a person, and while reading the book, you can see what Jacqueline is like during her childhood.
