My first year of college education I choose to take English Comp 1 because I felt it would help me improve my writing skills for other classes that I may take at the college level. This class was one of my hardest classes but you have to put time and effort in for your grades. Most of my paper grades are at a B range which isn 't bad but I 'm still learning how to develop my writing. I 've learned many important skills while taking this class to better my writing and how to make it more effective. I got to observe a place that was significant to me and express that place I was in. Detail was shown a lot in this essay for example the way I showed my readers what my views looked like from my porch bench. This sentence from my snapshot essay gives you a picture of what i 'm seeing and feeling “Looking out in front of me the sky is mostly clear, the clouds are puffy scattered in the air and the trees are still bright green and the air is cool and windy.”. I could have just said “Looking out I see the sky and the clouds and trees” but that would show no detail describing the sky, clouds and trees. This is why detail is so important in writing. I learned from this essay that detail is a essential when describing something or someone. Also learned to show and not tell meaning to let your audience experience your writing through your words, actions, feeling, etc. and not tell them with a summary. This was a main concept that should be used in all different types of writing. Audience has been mentioned in this but it 's important because you have to consider things that you need to include and what 's important for your readers so they can understand. Ive demonstrated this in my journalistic narrative by making my beginning more engaging so reader want to keep on reading. For example I began my essay like this “As I walk into the into the doors of our newly built YMCA I see the pool through the large glass composed wall. Little did I know that i 'd be starting many days off like this for next 10 years of my life.” I made these two sentences a little extra engaging because this is where i 've learned how to keep my readers attention. You 're beginning and ending can make a major difference in essay because it attracts your readers. My structure in my Open Letter is also displayed well. The paragraphs flowed all the way through with the good structure. Before English Comp 1 my essays weren 't very organized and I had trouble setting them
Admittedly, these are only a few of the skills I learned in Comp II. Academic writing is necessary to help me get to the next phase of my educational journey and I value the lessons I learned this semester. I found out that I do indeed belong here and I have the skills to move forward. I consider completing English Comp II as an extremely useful accomplishment that I can add to my toolbox.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. The strengths in my writing are my organizational skills, grammatical construct, and my work ethic. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. The “Are Helicopter Parents Entering the No Fly Zone?” essay, “Animal Cloning—How Unethical Is It?” essay, and the “The Clean Water Act—Is it Successfully Reducing Water Pollution?” essay all have a proper introduction, an informative thesis statement, a body, great conclusions, and works cited pages. Formatting the essays is an integral aspect of organizational skills. Each new paragraph is indented, the font is twelve-point Times New Roman, the sentences are double spaced, and the headers are correct.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout my high school experience, I've been able to obtain knowledge that I can use to better my life. Some of the classes I've taken have been a blessing in disguise. For example, I never expected to learn as much as I did about writing and literature by just simply reading. Many of my teachers have pushed me to my limits and inspired me to think differently from my peers. In general my best English experience was reading "MacBeth" by William Shakespeare in Mr. Elwell's class, where I also realized I had many English skills to improve on.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Personally, I believe that I have gained valuable knowledge in my English classes. Recently, I am about to end my third English course of college and it has been a good experience, those courses helped and influenced a lot in my writing. I believe I did more than just improve my writing skills. I received some rhetorical and genre knowledge, and learned about the writing process and how to appropriately enter a conversation without losing my own style of writing.
As a writer, my greatest strength is to layout the essay as introduction, body and conclusion and especially thesis. In EAP, I was taught carefully in this regard, the construction of introduction, a thesis is the main factor because it is the main point of the essay. How do you feel you performed on the Portfolio Project in leveraging your knowledge and skills gained throughout this course?
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. In the beginning of English Composition 1 I had no idea how to properly write a paper in MLA format. Not only, was passing my goal for the class, I hoped to grow as a writer so I could be ready for college. After taking English Composition 1 it has taught me a lot about writing essays for English classes in college. Through out, English Composition not only have I grown as a writer I have grown as a person.
I would like to begin by saying I have been a Laboratory technician for over ten years now and have worked at my current job for over three years. I began my internship with the feeling that I would not have anything to write or say about the experience but I was wrong. I started out with the blood bank department. I work my weekends in that department, we are assigned a department for weekend rotations. My supervisor is also the blood bank department supervisor. I came to the Houston Medical Center with little blood bank experience and will leave there with a very good understanding of blood bank. I had never performed a patient type and screen with the GEL technology before. I love using GEL. I find that the sensitivity is so much better than your old tube testing. I started out with the blood types, we use a special repeater pipette that can expel multiple samples. First you take the ABO RH card label it and pull the cover off the top. You then pipette your back type a and b cell 50ul each into the appropriate section. Next I add 25ul of patient plasma and add that to the back type a and b cell. To make the cell suspension you take 25ul of patient cells and add one dispense of the 2 plus diluent mix well and pipette 12.5up into the A, B, D, and D control sections of the GEL card. At this point you are ready to spin the card in the special GEL card centrifuge for 10 minutes. I found the type to take longer this way but when you are doing multiple types and screens it helps and things get done in a timely manner. To perform a screen with the GEL cards you need an IgG GEL card and the screen calls. First you label your card with screen cell I, II , and III then takes 50ul of each screen cell and add it to the appropriate section...
I am generally happy with my partnered presentation. I articulated the points I was hoping to convey in four minutes and thirty seconds, which I think is acceptable in an eight minute presentation, I felt I projected my voice appropriately for the room, and I am proud that I was able to stand so far into the alligator pit throughout the entire presentation. Although initially I felt uncomfortable standing so close to the audience, I think my forward presence had a strong impact on how my presentation was received. For my final presentation, I may try to practice in our actual classroom to accustom myself to the room as opposed to practicing in a side room because although we practiced numerous times in a side room, as soon as I stood up in front of the class, the environment felt overwhelmingly different. I am extremely embarrassed by the constant fidgeting of my clothes and hope to resolve the issue by wearing a jacket or more comfortable clothes for my final presentation.
Throughout this term, my fellow classmates and I have had a chance to participate in a group project with two or three of our peers. The general topic was a vivid problem in a industry. Our class had a very wide and diverse sets of topics: from Styrofoam, to industrial hacking, to corruption in an influential international organization like FIFA, and so many more. Our group decided to develop a project named “Outsourcing and the price we pay for brands”. The name itselves is somewhat self-explanatory, however the problem is so much more complicated and interesting. In this paper, many struggles and concerns, of the group and of my my own, will be unfolded as I reflect the progress of this project.
