This semester has been a very trying and very interesting time during this class, English 101. During that time, I have learned to integrate facts and real-life experiences to prove a point to persuade people and to get them emotionally invested on a specific topic. I also learned to read sources that require a higher understanding and be able to translate it into easily disgustable formats to understand the context of the source. As well, I had worked with others to improve my work to better itself in several steps and use facts to create quality content. With this quality content, I would be able to credit others work and hold a clear opinion about any topic. persuade the audience towards my side. Often, whenever I needed the audience to pay attention or really think about the topic, I would try to use emotional pleas to involve them. An example of a plea that I utilized was to claim that by getting vaccinated, with the benefits of herd immunity, they would be protecting loved ones as well. This would often make people react in different ways. If it was not trying to make them happy, it would often be how to make them feel sad and scared for what they choose to do. For one of my assignments, I talked about how people should get vaccinated because it would protect them from getting sick, or at least get their child vaccinated so they would not get infected with diseases, such as measles. After revising my work, I showed and explained the effects of Measles, Mumps and Rubella. I explained what could happen if they, or other loved ones, got sick with this and what pain and suffering they would have to deal with. This made them consider whether they should get vaccinated or not. This type of explanation utilized case studies and logical pleas to current events to provided evidence for why vaccinations are important. I found it hard to stay fluent with my writing though when it came to discussing about certain topics. I often jumped from place to place on ideas and it never truly transitions smoothly between these ideas. When it came to gathering sources, I had to be very certain of what I wanted to look for. This also involved using other words to represent what I was trying to get at. This often lead me to dead ends, or down different paths that would make me question my decisions and opinions on certain topics. For example, while looking into vaccinations, I had to investigate ideas that would cause people to not want to get vaccinated and then counteract these reasons with facts. Many had claimed that either some vaccines were no longer needed because the viruses had calmed and almost disappeared because of changes in environmental conditions. Thus, they did not feel the need to get vaccinations. However, it became a requirement to obtain the vaccination later. Another misconception that needed to be refuted was that people who got the vaccine often got sick with the virus themselves. One of the main examples many used was the flu shot, because after getting it they believed that they would be perfectly fine. Yet, the body must be able to build immunity to the flu and the individuals ended up getting sick for a week or two while trying to adjust and create immunity for the person. Thus, I would try to use information that would used against me and find information to counteract those arguments to strengthen my position. Creating my topics were often difficult, as I had to find topics I would be interested in and not get confused or bored with easily.
However, it also had to not be something that would often bore people because they have heard the same argument repeated beforehand. I also had to keep in consideration the possible sources out there that would be biased and so over-bearing that there would not be anything to counterargue. If there was not a counterargument, there would not be anything to prove and it would only be an informative paper. Unfortunately, several of my topics would often lead me to dead ends and make it difficult to find anything to speak about. After finding a topic, I would often try to write out several outlines to use for my main paper, as this helped to organize my thoughts. Sometimes I took different parts of an outline and replaced or merged it into another outline to improve clarity. After getting an outline, I would gather information under each section of the outline. I often wrote down a rough draft following this to organize my thoughts into a central format. When the rough draft was done, I had one of my peers review my work and give tips on what to change, clear up, or fix grammatically. After fixing up the first draft, I would see if I could add any more information to make my argument even more powerful than it was beforehand. I then would get it peer reviewed again and once that was done, I would edit it one more time to create my final draft. After I created my final draft, I got it checked one more time before submitting my final
product. Whenever I had to talk to anyone about the topics that I wrote about, such as the vaccination controversy, I need to provide information such as the sources I got the information from. An example of sources I used provided information including why viruses spread or are created. This information was invaluable, as it provided means for me to provide counter examples to their objections to my claims. Another thing I had to be open to were other opinions and questions. To counteract this, I tried to explain the best way I can to counter argue their claims or explain the reasoning of my ideas. Also, by having academic information, I can improve my quality of writing. Without this reliable information, my points would seem flawed and opinionated, rather than supported by facts. By utilizing argumentative strategies, such as emotional pleas, this allowed me to convince others that they should act in a specific manner. Furthermore, I learned to use my sources and be able to summarize them to benefit me in arguments to prove a point. I also learned to take certain steps to gather enough information to create an outline to help me to support my claims. By learning these things, I have gained a greater appreciation for rhetorical analysis and have learned how to apply these concepts to my daily life.
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.

I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
Another semester has ended. However, this time in English class, it was different. It started out the same: the required course work , the dreaded reading assignments along with the required essays for the class. Once class started, the professor went over the syllabus. I thought to myself that this was going to be a long first day. By the time I got to the second essay (about the sixth week), I started to realize that this English class is not like the others; it had much more to give. Before this class, English was all about structure and writing without errors. It concentrated more on the skeleton of the content rather than the content itself. This class taught me to look at English or more precise, literacies, in a different light. I have been able to develop a clear line of argument that incorporates ideas and evidences from sources; recognize that writing is a flexible and recursive process; and incorporate conventions for source integration such as paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting. I have a newfound respect and exhilaration for the English discourse.
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. First off thanks Mr Cole for being an awesome instructor that I really enjoyed being in your English 101 class. My second quarter of English writing class in college has very challenged both my researching and writing skills. I learned a lot of about myself, and I realized that the main thing I needed to work on in all my papers was really analysing information rather than just reporting on it. One of the most things that I liked about you and your English 101 class was your editing and your media comments. They were really helpful, made me easier to understand and realize my strengths and my weaknesses from all my papers. I think my biggest strength is brainstorming and revising. I have learned that I should do lots of brainstorms, outlines and give myself more time to find things and revise all my rough drafts to make them better. On the other hand, I always was stuck in using the punctuation mark such as comma, period and semicolon in my papers. Moreover, grammatical mistakes were also my weakness because
...dless of what I am trying to accomplish. I feel that I am much better now, in persuading someone through my writings; which would definitely come in handy in the future. The responsibility I have gained during this experience is incredible and has taught me to be a much more organized person. During this semester I was taught a process of how to write a paper and organize it. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me realize that I could definitely take the next step forward in my academic career. Each new experience I involve myself in has made me continue to grow and constantly learn something new. I am someone who has never really enjoyed English classes in the past and I when I registered for English 101 I only saw it as a requirement to graduate but I really did enjoy this English course and I know that it was something that was worthwhile for me.
With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and this has been a major eye opening experience. By being in your English 111 class, I have learned a great deal about myself as a writer and a communicator. English used to be a subject I took for granted because I always considered it to be easy and there wasn’t much to it. You have helped me realize that in order to write a good paper, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and usages; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned about rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
Writing has never been my strongest suit. While I have always done sufficient in writing and english classes, math and science are subjects that I take to with more ease. Because of this preference I have never loved anything I have written, nor have I felt confident in showing others my assignments. Through AP Language and Composition as a junior in high school, I was introduced to many of the concepts I would later see in English 101, but neglected to understand them to the extent I now do. Learning how to properly analyze a piece of text or a picture for rhetoric would have been a chore in the past, yet through this class I have learned to enjoy putting together the puzzle pieces an author gives. While analysis came easily, and I quickly grew to enjoy it, synthesizing arguments and opposing views was more of a challenge. Consequently, it took many drafts and trial and error to grasp this concept and feel confident in the work I produced, but can proudly say I did so. In the first semester of English 101 we were required to surpass three course goals, in which my senior class did. The course goals enabled my senior class to be able to summarize, respond and synthesize. In college students are asked to write many papers, one of them being a research paper. Students are asked to summarize the information and respond to it, therefore adding in their thoughts. I have learned and comprehend all of the essentials of writing a paper. I know the difference between all of the course goals and can explain them to great lengths. However, synthesizing brings in all the components from other sources and links all the information together.
The art of composition can be easily identified as the key focus in English 101. What I have found is that the class revolves around the process and individual steps it takes to compose a well written essay necessary to succeed in the class. Aside from succeeding in English 101, it also teaches students how to excel in their other classes and in their future profession.
