Introduction
Throughout my essay I plan to explain the location of my field experience and how it relates to education phycology. I learned and witness many new things in education as I was able to volunteer my time in going to World Language Academy. While achieving my 20 hours of experience I was in awe of the students and teachers are this school and how they taught, disciplined, and how they created a fun and enjoyable environment for the students.
Field Experience Site: World Language Academy
My choice for my field experience was World Language Academy. However due to the fact that it was summer vacation I was not able to sit in an actual classroom in the school but got to experience their immense World Language camp. In this camp, the students get to learn in multiple classroom Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese. Most students in the camp can fluently understand and speak Spanish and Chinese. All the Hispanic teachers spoke Spanish the kids and they all understood and acknowledged that they understood and will do as they said. Same goes for the Chinese speaking teachers they explain in Chinese or give the directions and they understand and do as followed. From my readings, it is made know that bilingual students are more likely to “develop executive functions- higher order cognitive processes responsible for goal-directed behavior” (Kaushanskaya, 2014). Having students that become bilingual at such young age can affect their cognitive behavior and thinking. It also creates for the student an understanding of the diverse world we live in and an acceptance of all the different people and languages around and creates for them a very helpful
When I immigrated to the United States I couldn’t speak any English, so the Department of Education staff sent me to a school which only for the immigrant student and taught student with bilingual education. I only needed to stay in this school for one year because they only introducing student the fundamental English skill and the American culture. After one year, I would transfer to the local high school to continue my high school education but there was no more bilingual education. I believe that bilingual education school is good way for the immigrants to break the language barriers. I still remember that the first school day in the United States I was very afraid and nervous because I didn’t know any English and the American culture. However, when I arrived to the school I found out that there were a lot of student who came from the same country as I was, and some of the instructors could speak Chinese too. I started to not afraid of school and feel excited about my new school life. After I studied in this school for one year, I transfer to a local high school which didn’t have bilingual education, but I didn’t afraid my new school life because I already know how to communicate with other students. A program of bilingual education is a very good program that help immigrants student break the language barriers. As Richard wrote “A major study analyzed more than three decades of research, combining 17 different studies, and found that bilingual education programs produce higher levels of student achievement in reading” (Schaefer, 2015, p.96). However, “Attacks on bilingualism in voting and education have taken several forms and have even broadened to question the appropriateness of U.S. residents using any language other than English” (Schaefer, 2015, p.96). Being bilingual will help students be more successful. In the time that Richard Rodriguez wrote “Aria”, the Chicano Movement was going on and he saw being bilingual in a different view. People saw being bilingual as non-beneficial due to the little diversity and the little mindedness of people in the United States. Zoe is a very great attentive student. She is a student whoholds a lot of valuable pronciples from her Haitian-Cuabn culture. The monment she enters the building she greets people with respect. She always says good morning and refers to all staff and her peers by their name. Zoe always comes to school in a positive attitude. I have yet to see her upset which allows me to believe she is good in toning her emotions or personal life outside of school grounds. Outside of school she is always busy between homework, family and tutoring at the SCO Family Services program in Downtown, Brooklyn. By the end of her long day she is exhausted but yet a smile is always on her face giving no sinces of anger or worries.if I was to describe Zoe’s emotional tone or color it would be lavender. She is calm, soothing to me around but ye keps firm.she had a bright future a head of her. Between the classes I have observed her in she is always energetic, cheerful and strong minded. She is excited in theatre class showing off her acting skills and in Spanish class she is attentive when doing her Spanish class work.
Teachers must understand the culture of their students. Being able to understand the cultural differences will help to make a connection of what is being taught. “Helping learners make the link between their culture and the new knowledge and skills they encounter inside school is at the heart of ensuring that all students achieve at high levels” (National Education Association, 2011). Helping our children understand their culture helps them to learn about their roles in the world. Educators are suppose to work with their students to culturally develop their student in a very diverse world. Knowing where they com from and having a solid understanding of their culture will prepare them to be responsible, proud individuals. Its important for teachers and administrators to be culturally diverse so that they are able to connect with their students. When students can make a genuine connection with their teacher, they feel a sense of belonging and they feel that some one cares about them as a person not just a student. Having that sense of feeling that they matter will motivate them to do their best at all

From my experience, bilingual education was a disadvantage during my childhood. At the age of twelve, I was introduced into a bilingual classroom for the first time. The crowded classroom was a combination of seventh and eighth grade Spanish-speaking students, who ranged from the ages of twelve to fifteen. The idea of bilingual education was to help students who weren’t fluent in the English language. The main focus of bilingual education was to teach English and, at the same time, teach a very basic knowledge of the core curriculum subjects: Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. Unfortunately, bilingual education had academic, psychological, and social disadvantages for me.
When I was young, I could be anything I wanted. A princess for a day? Done. Everything was that simple. My whole world- my whole life was the definition of an idealism. As I was exposed to more of the real world and happenings of real life, my idealistic image seemed to dwindle away. No longer did I possess the adequacy to be a princess. I could not handle the throne much deserve the authority. This analogy, I feel, is fitting for my college experience. Why? There are a few things only time can teach you and only through experience can you remember. Earlier this year, Singapore’s former Prime Minister, Lee Guan Yew told the press (SinChew Daily, 2013) that he would like to urge all the parents in Singapore to let their children to receive bilingual education as soon as possible as it deliver more pros than cons for the development of the children. Traditionally, bilingual education was perceived by experts as “damaging” to children early language development as it may cause them to confuse between two languages and affect their learning (Chitester, D.J., 2007), but as more recent researchers begin to uncover the advantages of bilingual education (Cognitive Development Lab, 2013 & National Association for Bilingual Education, n.d.), people around the globe are now accepting and encouraging their children to receive bilingual education, picking up additional languages like: Spanish or Mandarin. The bilingual education indeed offers several priceless advantages to everyone like helping in the development of brain, providing wider job opportunities and making more new friend.
For someone who studies different cultures and religions like me, gaining understanding another culture through its language has a major benefit. Somethings about a culture get lost in translator and being able to see a culture from the language of the people who speak it has a major impact on how you understand that culture. Therefore, this is able to encourage the ability to communicate and appreciate the depth and diversity of the world. Communication with two different countries, or three, or four, will further bring the world closer together, in hopes of closing the divide between some countries. By learning a second language, it can significantly broaden your native language as it gives you stronger vocabulary skills, improved literacy skills and a better understanding of the grammar and construction of your own native language. Furthermore, this can help you in other educational studies. Though it is possible to travel to another country without acquiring the native language, the experience you will have is greatly diminished as you will not see beyond the surface of their culture. Additionally, knowing the native language makes travelling easier, by being able to order meals in restaurants, ask and understand directions. Additionally, it makes it easier to find accommodation, it’s more enjoyable, informative and more satisfying. In 2009, teachers of a New Jersey school banned foreign languages and stated, “any language other than English will not be tolerated" (Debaron 1). This situation was soon no longer allowed. While over ten percent of the total adolescent education systems contain emergent bilinguals, a whopping sixty percent of those students are educated in only English (Bale).
