CLASS observation was recently conducted in your classroom. Here is the feedback that resulted from that observation. If you have any questions regarding this document or the CLASS observation tool, please contact your Program Officer.
Feedback Areas of Development: Social Emotional Support:
Positive Climate: Today’s observation showed that there are very few indications that the teacher and students in this classroom enjoy a warm and supportive relationship with one another. Students and children in this classroom do not appear to be connected in any meaningful way. Teachers smiled rarely and did not show much verbal or physical affection toward the children. The teacher at times used hard voice to gain more control of the classroom. Children

The children would oftentimes push and hit each other without being noticed by the teacher.
Teacher Sensitivity: The teacher consistently fail to be aware of children who need help. For example, a child had her hair pulled by another child two times before the teacher noticed it. The teacher is unresponsive and often ignore children who are crying. Teacher are not effectively addressing children’s issues and concerns. For example, the teacher was observed telling children multiple times to use their inside voice but children continues to be loud. The children rarely seek support from the teacher or share their ideas with the teacher.
Regard for Student’s Perspectives: The teacher is flexible in her lessons and activities and often follows the students lead. However, there were very few opportunities to promote autonomy and leadership. Children did not help out in this classroom. The teacher was observed encouraging children to talk, but the conversation was usually short. There were a few instances in which the teacher prompted the child to explain her perspective about clouds. This conversation was very reach. The teacher asked the child about different colors of cloud and what they mean, the teacher promoted the child to explain if clouds move. The teacher even introduced the child to a new word, “Cumulus Clouds”. However, these types of interactions are not typical in this

The teacher is inconsistent in her use of a variety of modality and materials to gain student’s interest and participation during activities and lessons. For example, a group of children were observed playing with Legos at a table and these group of children were focus on what they were doing. Meanwhile, other group of children were observed throwing smalls piece of manipulative toys on the floor. Some of the children seem to be interested in the materials, but not all of them. The teacher makes no attempt guiding students to learning objectives. The teacher provided a small group activity in which children had to decorate the letter B, but the teacher rarely mentioned what the purpose of the lesson
Without reading Mike Rose’s detailed descriptions of his experiences as a learner a perspective teacher may never suspect that the quiet student in the class is daydreaming to avoid the material that he/she does n...
Carol Gerber Allred (Allred, 2008) describes strategies for improving classroom climate related to learning for the students, while enforcing a set of classroom expectations, informing students of their positive actions, infusing intrinsic motivation, encouraging positive behavior, connecting with students’ families and community, and being positive yourself (Allred, 2008). These strategies align with the attributes described in indicator 1a to foster respect for diversity, establish rapport, promote risk-taking and establish high
Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
The way a teacher listens, talks and observes a child is influenced by the images they have of the child. Teachers who see children as being creative, engaging, imaginative, communicators and learners have a classroom of children who
Positive behaviour is the effective attitude of every student which opens widely the door of education. No progression and development will be achieved without appropriate level of positive behaviour. Such behaviour doesn’t appear from itself, but is a process which involves building of positive relationship by using effective communication where right values and attitudes are put in place and where school rules are followed. Once the relationship is created and is positively maintained then problems based on behavioural issues will be less, which will impact on children’s achievement and will demonstrate progression towards different activities.
I believe that teaching and learning is both a science and an art, which requires the implementation of already determined rules. I see learning as the result of internal forces within the person student. I know that children differ in the way they learn and grow but I also know that all children can learn. Students’ increased understanding of their own experience is a legitimate form of knowledge. I will present my students with opportunities to develop the ability to meet personal knowledge.
Each teacher should be involving their student, setting high expectations, and have leadership qualities. Classroom climate could also be meaning a healthy classroom which is, “help students see themselves as competent and effective learners, encourage self-determination by setting their own goals, support students in becoming self-controlled by behaving and adaptively with a minimum of teacher supervision, focus on caring and authentic relationships, and foster ongoing and rewarding friendships with classmates (McCombs, Miller, 2007, p.67)” When the climate in a school is great, and healthy then there is a focus on the academic achievement gap. The achievement gap is meaning the students
They need a positive climate because it helps with children’s development, learning, and achievements. It helps with the children’s development because they feel safe, they build relationships, and become social. They feel safe because they can be themselves and not get judged by other students. The children will build relationships with each other and with teachers that is huge for when they grow up. They work on their social skills, the little kids just accept anyone and they do not worry about their backgrounds. The positive climate helps with learning
Field Book Essay In a science class teaching the teacher must use student centered approach to convey his or her ideas or teaching matters. I observed a science class on rocks and minerals. The teacher used a teacher centered approach with very little participation from the students. I do believe that children centered approach gives better opportunity for students to participate and learn. But the teacher used no motivational devises to stimulate interest. The objective of the lesson was to make the students able to identify 15 different types of rocks and mineral and the difference between them. The students learned to identify 15 different types of rocks and mineral and the difference between them. The two students Charles and William did not satisfy at the end of the lesson. There was no criterion about the effectiveness of the lesson. The teacher had a lesson plan and she got most of the content of the lesson from Internet sources. The teacher was free to set objectives. The objectives guided lesson planning. The evaluation was planned by using the verbal response of the students during the class. If I were the teacher I would use more of student centered approach to convince the students. The lesson was teacher-centered and did not encourage the students as much as needed. The students were not motivated at all to learn in this lesson. The climate was not feasible for learning that would have impacted motivation. The student centered approach would be beneficial and useful to the students or the participants of the classroom. Through continuous study and up-to-date Knowledge the teacher should remain current in their subject area field. As far as the teachers, professional development is concerned she must be well prepared...
The positivity climate will create a positive and safe climate for all stakeholders specifically the students. Our students feel safe and secure enough to participate in class and engage in all course work because they know that our educational institutions main priority and focus is on their success. I have seen over the past couple of years several of our at risk students come out of their shells per say and want to participate in class discussions and complete their course work. This hasn’t always been the case. Most of our at risk students end up dropping out or missing several days of school throughout the year and don’t give themselves the opportunity to be
There are slow learners as well as a mixture of fast learners in every classroom. These should be taken into consider and activities should be planned accordingly so that slow learners will not left behind and fast learners will not be bored. There are students with learning difficulties which will affect the teaching learning process. These should be taken into consider and teachers need to avoid things happening which as an effect in the teaching learning process. Behavior such as disruptive and destructive shows similar characteristics. These behaviors need to be discussed with the parents and necessary actions need to be taken to create a good atmosphere in the class. Also teachers will be able to identify different cognitive levels and learning styles. Some students learn through audio, some need to see visually while some of them learn by writing. So as teachers we need to have all these learning styles in a lesson to fulfill each individual. Planning should be done accurately which helps in the teaching learning process. Teachers play a great role in handling different children in the classroom. To build up an effective teaching process, these facts need to be taken into consideration. Teachers could think of different ways that they can implement in the classroom in the process of teaching and learning. Group method is one of the main teaching
Generally social environment of the school includes good relationship between the peers, between teacher and students and with principal and staff members, relationship between teacher and parents and other community members etc. It implies a measure of the quality and quantity of the cognitive, creative and social support that has been available to the subjects during the school life in terms of teacher-pupils interaction. The social environment is the products of the interactions between the teachers and the pupils in school situations. Perkin (1951) concludes that the major aspect of the classroom climate is the quality interaction between teacher and pupils. Teacher and administrators plays a crucial role in developing a positive social climate in every corner of the school. A good social environment helps in inculcating various social values, democratic ideas and feelings. It helps in bridging the gap between school and society by bringing schools near to society and vice versa. The National Education Commission (1964-66) observed that “the destiny of India is now being shaped in her classrooms”. The success in the great adventure of national reconstruction is based on the number of students coming out of the school and colleges. So, in the process of learning, the teacher is expected to create a democratic environment which will steer constructive and inspirational individual as well as group activities in the right
Learning initially begins with one's attitude toward themselves, others, and the world we live in. It is our attitudes that play a major role in shaping our experiences, which in turn affects the way in which we learn. We must first be able to interpret the world using information we already know, in order to understand something entirely new. As a teacher, I could only hope that I can provide children with a positive educational experience, one that will broaden the scope in which they view themselves, others, and the world on a larger scale. Children already acquire a desire to learn, however, it is up to us to sti...
The environment that we are in contributes greatly to our educational experience. Environment can affect mood, energy, effectiveness, and motivation, which can in turn affect how students learn and how much they learn. Students are in the classroom for a majority of their day and even lives, therefore it is important that they are not only comfortable physically but that teachers take time to consider how class should be taught. Teachers should make sure that their lessons are interactive, thought provoking, and positive because these elements can aid in students’ education.
