The environment that we are in contributes greatly to our educational experience. Environment can affect mood, energy, effectiveness, and motivation, which can in turn affect how students learn and how much they learn. Students are in the classroom for a majority of their day and even lives, therefore it is important that they are not only comfortable physically but that teachers take time to consider how class should be taught. Deep learning prompts an overall understanding, advances long term retention, and the ability to apply that understanding to new issues in new ideas. Surface learning, on the other hand, focuses on memorization of unchallenged and unrelated facts and there is little to no long term retention, meaning surface learners are more likely to forget what they learn. A way that teachers can implicate deep learning is by not just having individual students answer questions, interactive methods permit all students to take an interest. For example, Wenzel (1999) researched college lectures and reported that the longer the lecture the less notes the students took.
