1. Introduction

Individuals are assumed to learn better when they discover things by themselves and when they control the pace of learning (Leidner & Jarvenpaa, 1995). Therefore, it is natural to expect that self-directed, interactive learning would improve learning outcome.
Jerome Bruner, a constructivist, suggested three stages of cognitive growth. One of them is the iconic stage. He stated that when new information is presented, it is useful to provide a visual image and this can be true at any age. Learners will grasp complicated concepts more easily if they have an illustration. That’s why it is important to have diagrams and pictures when giving instructions. In his philosophy of constructivism, he emphasized that children learn first through experience and through physical interaction with concepts. Teachers need to provide experiences in contexts that motivate the child to learn. This is referred to as readiness. All instruction needs to be structured in such a way that the child can grasp it easily. Bruner calls this spiral organization. And, instruction needs to be designed so that it fills in the gaps in the child’s knowledge or so that the child can extrapolate from it. This theory is crafted by Jean Piaget (1896– 1980) and his work concentrated on seeing how kids see the world. The third stage is the Concrete Operational stage (7-11 years); this is when children are starting to solve problems mentally and develop concepts and are beginning to get better at understanding and following rules. There are five ways in which Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and Vygotsky’s theory of the Zone of Proximal Development. The very first way that teachers can use these theories to teach constructively is by providing scaffolded instruction within the ZPD for their students (292). In other words, a teacher must be able to assist children in achieving a goal that may be slightly too difficult for them to reach alone. An example of this would be if a teacher had decided that her class should do an experiment on how well plants grow based on the amount of water they receive, she could challenge her students to make a hypothesis about what they think will happen. Constructivism represents a paradigm shift form education based on cognitive theories. This concept assumes that learners construct their own knowledge on the basis of interaction with their environment. (Gagnon & Collay, 200?) The role of the teacher as a constructor of the learning experience to ensure authentic curriculum and assessment which is responsive to the skills, needs and experiences of the learner, within established curriculum framework and with the reference to the achievement of literacy, numeracy, retention and attainment of outcomes. Constructivism is a method that says students learn by building their schema by adding to their prior knowledge by the use of scaffolding (Rhinehart Neas). Because the students are basically teaching themselves new information, the teacher is there mainly for support and guidance for the students.

Learning theories open educators up to new ideas. They are necessary to expand our knowledge of how learning works. Piaget’s work is a well-tested and educators around the world should be aware of Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive development in particular because it will improve the quality of their teaching. A qualitative approach was adopted involving two principal data collection methods; a thorough and systematic review literature and in-depth interviews on critical pedagogical approaches, technologies supporting those pedagogies and management of learning resources with e-learning providers. Reasons for adopting detailed interviews are as follows: First, interviews are appropriate to examine the extent to which the critical factors identified from literature and empirical studies are practiced. Accordingly, it was deemed that interviews are particularly suitable for understanding versatile beliefs and practices of individual e-learning stakeholder in assessing what works the best (or worst) to enhance e-learning effectiveness. Second, e-learning ecosystem is a complex system, which requires acceptance and adaptation by e-learning providers. For this reason, evaluating the perceptions of staff involved in e-learning environment is necessary to identify the critical factors facilitating or impeding e-learning success. Third, sustainability of e-learning success requires the three components of e-learning ecosystem to function as a unit mutually benefitting each other. To fully understand the interaction between these components, interview method was considered to be effective. Fourth, this research is intended to develop and test the research model with a wider audience as a follow up research.
