Importance of Failure for College Students
Failure, in today’s society, has become something to fear, avoid, and for that reason must be prevented at all cost. Be it a student failing his/her final exam, unemployment, or bailouts for failing companies, the world now seems to recognize failure as having no redeeming social value. Though the drive to succeed is consequential, the harsh reality is we can’t win all the time. Success has become an expectation rather than a goal. Students and parents will do all it takes to succeed, regardless of the lengths they have to go. Parents will even go so far as to do their child’s work. But is that so? Without denying the value of perseverance, and recognizing that these slogans “learn from your mistakes”, “keep trying” and “never give up” can be useful in overcoming certain obstacles. Failure is an essential component for a college student’s success.
College students fail and they fail very often but in the end, it’s what drives them to become successful in college. When students fail, they have the opportunity to step back and attempt to understand why they failed. What brought about my failure? Were my efforts enough? These are some of the questions college students should ask themselves whenever they fail at something.
