Importance of Failure for College Students
Failure, in today’s society, has become something to fear, avoid, and for that reason must be prevented at all cost. Be it a student failing his/her final exam, unemployment, or bailouts for failing companies, the world now seems to recognize failure as having no redeeming social value. Though the drive to succeed is consequential, the harsh reality is we can’t win all the time. Success has become an expectation rather than a goal. Students and parents will do all it takes to succeed, regardless of the lengths they have to go. Parents will even go so far as to do their child’s work. Students are willing to sacrifice their integrity for a good grade. But what does one learn from this expectation to uphold perfection at all times? If

But is that so? Without denying the value of perseverance, and recognizing that these slogans “learn from your mistakes”, “keep trying” and “never give up” can be useful in overcoming certain obstacles. Failure is an essential component for a college student’s success.
College students fail and they fail very often but in the end, it’s what drives them to become successful in college. When students fail, they have the opportunity to step back and attempt to understand why they failed. What brought about my failure? Were my efforts enough? These are some of the questions college students should ask themselves whenever they fail at something. Students will be able to analyze themselves and bring up solutions to improve their efforts or the causes of their failure, which helps them recover from their previous failure. I have been a
Mary Sherry talks about students who failed or just got by in school in the article “In Praise Of the F Word”. The fear of failing will only get people as far as they are willing to go if they are truly trying to better themselves it makes sense that failing would be a motivator. On the other hand, some people don’t care at all and failing is just part of their vocabulary. Mary reflects on how “high-school graduates and drop outs pursuing graduate-equivalency certificates will learn the skills they should have learned in school”. (1) For a lot of people the realization comes after they are out of school and realize that one of the only ways to move up and make more money is more education. Failing is only as affective as someone makes it the more serious someone takes failing the higher their chances of getting higher grades.
Learning process requires time, dedication, and self-discipline. There is not an easy way to succeed in college. Instead, there are instructors who offer support to students, encouraging them to succeed. Learning from instructors’ feedback, students are
Everyone strives to be the greatest, especially teenagers in school, failing can be upsetting when it comes to failing a class or grade. Failure in school can have a huge impact on a student's future. When students aim for a goal it's either accurate or precise depending on their mindset.
William Zinsser’s article “The Right to Fail” discusses the unrealistic vision of success and failure that society has placed on itself. “The Right to Fail” is an excerpt from Zinsser’s book The Lunacy Boom which was published in 1970; this excerpt brings an awareness to the expectations that America places on young people and those who fail. Zinsser is speaking to a general audience of young and older people in America. The goal of this article is to change the way that society views achievements and failures. Rather than a setback, Zinsser sees failure as a way to learn and grown from the past; failure is meant to be used as tool to push society forward and improve things.
Failure and learning have a complicated, yet important relationship with each other. In ‘A Nation of Wimps’, Hara Marano writes about through trial and error humans can become successful. An article by Robert I. Sutton of the Harvard Business Review, talks about a method of learning from failures. Dr. Everett Piper describes in the article ‘This is Not a Day Care. It’s a University!’ that students who do not repent their sins can not learn from them. In the speech ‘This is Water’, by David Wallace he explains how learning to think is in a way knowing what to think about. An article by Bob Lenz titled ‘Failure Is Essential to Learning’ addresses the notion that failure is a key importance in the process of learning. Failure is an essential and important step in the difficult process of learning.
Many students are struggling in college. According to the New York Times Web site, only 33 percent of the college students are graduating in six years. Obviously students still need much help to succeed in order to get where they want to go. Although college can be challenging, I am going to succeed by using advice from experts, by developing strategies and ideas, and by taking advantage of the benefits offered by my college.
miscommunication, which in ways could cause loss of work time, due to doing the wrong job.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
Failure is apart of life, it can make or break a person. When a person experiences a type of failure it is now up to them to see how they respond. They can choose the high road, and become a stronger person for it. Then they can choose the low road, the easy way out. The easy way out is never a good choice. It can lead only to destruction. The high road is the right choice to take when responding to failure. It will lead down a path of success. Jessica Lahey’s article, “When Success Leads to Failure” is an article that shows how kids are experiencing failure. Lahey says that, “these kids have a fear for failure, and that they have given up natural loves for learning. They are scared of not being successful”(Lahey). The truth is life is hard there will be failure. There is nothing in this world that comes easy to anyone.
Many students fail, but they are expected to learn from their mistakes. Joe Levine says that students
We all do things at home that we would never do at work. It could be smoking, imbibing, and many more actions that are not accepted in the work environment but should we be penalized for doing these things outside of work? This is a great question because in this case a plethora of us would be out of a job. The fine line between work and personal life has been wearing away for some time. As work life and personal life start to blur employers are naturally going to endeavor to regulate the comportment of their employees since they now represent their respective compa-nies both in and out of the work place. Regulating people outside of the workplace feels like an assault on individual rights. I can understand some regulation of military or professional sports because their physical condition directly relates to their job performance… but that’s a slippery slope. Unless it is detrimental to the job or poorly reflects values of the vocation personal life is just
In conclusion, There are many things you will need to change and learn about yourself to be a success in college and taking accountability for all that happens while in college, will teach you growth and maturity. Relying on these positive techniques will allow you to accomplish not only being a great student but giving you the tools and exposure to be the best employee after obtaining your dream degree. I believe that most students may be successful in college and that the measure of handwork, devotion, and dedication are the features that divides the students who are effective from the students who are not. We may not all be effective at everything, yet don't work against yourself and at any rate try it out.
Currently there are many students tried to go to college and finish their degree. But some students don’t know what they should do in college and how to avoid the failure in classes. The failure will happen if you have no real goal or plan to finish it.
A recent failure that has changed how I go about my daily life is one that many college freshman experience in their first year. In high school I was a very good student, but I did not have to put in a lot of effort to get the grades that I wanted. I would joke with my friends and say that high school taught me how to put in the least amount of effort, and still get the maximum result. All of my teachers told me, as they did every student, that college was going to be different and if you do not put in more effort it would be very difficult. I knew this coming into school, but I am not sure if part of me wanted to prove people wrong, or if I actually was just adjusting to college life. I did not study as much as I should of, and as a result my grades suffered. Luckily I did not completely ruin my grade point average, but since first semester I have completely changed my study habits. This has taught a much needed lesson about hard work, and I am determined to never again fail at my studies. I am the kind of person that learns a lot from failures. My dad has always told me it is ok to make a mistake, but never make the same mistake twice. This I a motto that I live by.
Finally, parents should take a more tender, passive approach to grades so students don’t feel stress to do perfectly. This ties in with students being pressured leading to cheating, a quick and easy fix for mom always on you about grades. This means that if parents were more encouraging and helpful instead of aggressive and pushy, cheating will be even less
