2. Explain how you showed leadership during a challenging situation. A good example of a time I showed leadership during a challenging situation would be when my employers hired a new employee. The new employee was only sixteen years old and it was her first job of any kind. While she had the best intentions, she found it hard to find things to keep her busy, and she would often forget certain things she should do. My employers were becoming increasingly frustrated with her, and while I understood where they were coming from, I also knew what it’s like to start a new job and to be sixteen. So whenever I would see her standing around looking for things to do, I would mention to her a job that needs to be done, and when I saw her about to forget to do …show more content…
something, I would remind her to do it. After only a few weeks, she was able to remember everything on her own and had no trouble keeping busy. 3. Recount a time when you achieved a goal by following instructions. I would say the biggest goal I’ve achieved by following instructions would be when I earned a majority of my Ontario Secondary School Diploma through correspondence. Although I did have teachers available for assistance, most of the course work was done through independent study, which requires following the instructions set out by the textbook, course material, and your instructor. I was able to complete my high school diploma by earning over 10 credits in on year through independent correspondence courses, and I would credit following instructions as a large component of that accomplishment. 4. Explain what you did to help others reach their goals. At least three friends and relatives of mine also completed their high school diploma through correspondence courses. I’ve tutored and assisted them when they took courses that I had already taken. A friend of mine credited me with helping him finish his Grade 12 Math and English correspondence courses so that he could take the course he was applying to in college. I’m currently helping my neighbour’s daughter with her Grade 10 Math correspondence course. I would say that by using my knowledge of courses that I have previously taken, I’ve become an effective tutor and have helped people reach their educational goals as a result. 5. Write down all of your academic achievements. My academic achievements in order of oldest to most recent are my Ontario Secondary School Diploma, the Student of the Program award I received for being the top student in the Gateway program, the Business and Computers award I received for having the best attendance and grades in those courses. My current GPA at Loyalist College is 91.7, and if I maintain that average I will graduate on the dean’s list. 6.
List awards, scholarships, or commendations that you have received. • Student of the Day Program Award – Gateway Community Education Centre/Napanee District Secondary School (An award received for receiving more credits than anyone else in the program as well as having a high grade average and outstanding attendance) • Business and Computers Award - Gateway Community Education Centre/Napanee District Secondary School (An award received for having the highest proficiency in the program for Business and Computer courses.) • Ferris Scholarship Fund Bursary – Loyalist College (Bursary award received for submitting an essay explaining an obstacle that I have conquered). 7. Describe compliments you have received from employers or teachers. When I attended the Gateway program through Napanee District Secondary School, I was in my last month and was still three credits short of graduating. I began working through my lunch periods so that I would be able to graduate on time. The educational assistant at Gateway told me multiple times that if she owned a business I would be the first person she hired because she could see how hard I worked and how I devoted my self to completing things and reaching my
goals. While attending Loyalist College I received a compliment from one of my professors. She stated how proud she was of my for the high grades that I had been earning. When I worked part-time as a janitorial assistant one summer, I received compliments from both my supervisor and employers. They stated that they were impressed with how hard I worked at my age and that I definitely always earned my paycheck. 8. List the five key traits of a successful paralegal. In my opinion, five key traits of a successful paralegal are problem solving skills, communication skills, confidentiality, advocacy, and legal research skills. The main priority of a paralegals job, whether running their own practice or working under a lawyer, is to help client’s solve the issues that they have sought legal help for. Even if working under a lawyer, the lawyer’s client is relying on them to help solve their problem, and the lawyer is relying on you to assist in solving the problem. Therefore problem-solving is vital in a paralegals career. Communication is a vital skill in any legal profession, including paralegal. The forms of communication that a paralegal uses on a regular basis are nearly endless. Interviewing clients, filling out forms, e-mails, phone calls, and communicating with court officials at trial are just a few examples of the constant communications that paralegals have. Confidentiality is not only essential when a paralegal is in practice, it is also required of them by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Your client’s expect you to hold in confidence all information related to the matter you’re helping them with, as does the Law Society. If a paralegal cannot hold information in confidentiality, they risk losing their reputation as well as their license to practice. When a client retains you, you become their advocate. It is your responsibility from the day you retain a client, to the day the matter ends, to advocate for your client. Whether it is communicating to the opposing for them, filling out legal documents, or appearing in court as their representative, you are required to always advocate for your client and act in their best interests. Although legal research is less of ethical importance, it is still a vital skill for a paralegal to have. Whether you’re on your own or working under a lawyer, many cases are going to require you to do legal research to find the answer you are looking for. For example, if you are involved in a Small Claims action that has made it all the way to trial, chances are that there is no clear cut law that puts one party in the right and the other in the wrong. You will need case law to help support your case. Being able to research case law and statutes is a vital skill for any area of law and a paralegal is not properly prepared if they are unable to do legal research. Part II 9. b. Describe an instance in which you developed an idea. When I was attending the Gateway program through Napanee District Secondary School, I began to notice that there were limited choices of courses to take. I had the idea to check online to see all the different correspondence courses that Ontario had to offer. I found a large variety of courses, and what caught my interest the most were the college and university level business courses. I asked the program coordinator if there was any way I would be able to take these business courses. Gateway then got access to the courses, printed the course material, and allowed me to take them. After I was finished the course became available to the entire program. In the months after I had the idea, I started to notice new courses that other students were taking that had not been previously available. It appeared that my idea of researching other courses had started to be implemented by other students as well. Part III 10. c. Describe a situation in which you demonstrated a skill that would be beneficial to a paralegal. Over the summer I volunteered with the Community Advocacy and Legal Centre in Belleville, Ontario, assisting Tenant Duty Counsel. My main job was intake, I filled out intake forms for tenant’s who were seeking Tenant Duty Counsel. I communicated with each person to find out if they were a tenant or landlord, and then make sure that I was able to understand the information they were communicating to me, and vice versa. I made sure that the information I wrote on the intake form was one hundred percent correct, and I also always made sure that they completely understood the questions I was asking. In addition, some tenants were visibly upset about their situation, so I offered a listening ear, while also being sure that they did not tell there whole story in the hallway for everyone to hear. I feel that every day I volunteered there I displayed communication & listening skills, which are vital for a paralegal to have.
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.
I’ve demonstrated leadership qualities in various ways throughout my time at high school. During the drafting competition, my group needed some confidence and someone there to help guide them to victory, and I was there to help them. A group works together, but sometimes you need a leader. This leader will help facilitate and get the group to do what they’re supposed to do. I think I helped ease off their nerves and I told them to relax and do how we practiced. This paid off because we placed first place and each of us
I have had both the pleasure and discomfort of being led by good and bad leaders. The way I simply define leadership is by being able to do as you say. Lead from the front and Set the example.
Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. I had many issues doing this throughout my project because I am only one person and I can’t be everywhere at once. Thusly made being a leader a drudgery. But I had an incredible set of adults guiding me along the way, who taught me that being a leader was not doing everything myself, being a leader
It was a tough situation, the whole team was busy, and doctors from other floors came to take care of the seizing patient. Meanwhile, the rapid response team was on the floor, taking care of a physically aggressive patient. At the end of the shift, they were very thankful to me and said that I was helpful and handled the situation right. One concept of leadership that could have been useful in this situation is
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Leadership can be defined in many ways, but one thing all leaders have in common is determination to get a task done. Although leaders may carry out this action in many different ways they all do what needs to be done in order to reach their goal. Florence Nightingale was willing to gather a group of women and pick up and leave her home to tend to the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War.
Leadership at the operational level requires the ability to link tactical actions to meet strategic objectives. Successful use of operational leadership tenants combined with specific character traits of an operational commander provides a snapshot of an effective leader who can successfully accomplish the determined strategic objectives. Professor Milan Vego provides a framework for the tenets of operational leadership and Field Marshal Slim presents his viewpoint on essential qualities required of an operational commander. , The British leaders, Admiral Carden and General Sir Hamilton will be compared and contrasted with the German leader of the Turkish forces, General von Sanders using selected elements of Vego’s and Slim’s philosophies of operational leadership and command.
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
With so many constant changes today with different generations, legal and political circumstances and ever-changing and improving technology sources, organizations have new and recurring issues arising every single day. The reasons for these issues vary widely and develop because of so many different situations. The outcome of the situation depends on many factors including the issue at hand, the management style and the ethics of the organization to simply name a few. These outcomes can certainly make or break an organization if not handled appropriately. The issue I have found to be the most significant is leadership. Within leadership, there is the opportunity for many issues in itself.
My biggest personal leadership failure occurred earlier this year when I worked at Einstein Bros Bagels at Coffman Union. I stayed there from January until April making and serving bagels to customers. However, I had the morning shift, the busiest period of the day. Long lines would form every time I was there, and sometimes I couldn’t catch up. One day in April, my co-worker, a veteran making bagels, was absent, and someone who didn’t have as much experience replaced her. What followed was a mess. My team chemistry with the replacement was dreadful, and a ton of people had to wait a while for their orders. My manager saw the incident, and after my shift was over, he gave me the option of leaving my job. I accepted, but my self-confidence was in a state that was beyond repair. It was one of the first times that I felt I let others down with my work performance. I learned that I shouldn’t expect to be great at everything and that I should analyze my weaknesses before taking on something challenging.
Earning this award as a freshman motivated me to continue to embolden others and to improve my community throughout my educational
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
“Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2). The most effective leadership I have incurred was during a difficult transition in my life. Moving to college and not knowing what I was in for or how I would meet anyone was a scary concept, but the leadership of a few girls in the dorm next door helped me succeed. I truly believe I made it through my first year of college because of the Bible study I was a part of my first year. Their leadership gave me the confidence I needed to make it through the most trivial year of my college experience.
