“Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2). The most effective leadership I have incurred was during a difficult transition in my life. Moving to college and not knowing what I was in for or how I would meet anyone was a scary concept, but the leadership of a few girls in the dorm next door helped me succeed. I truly believe I made it through my first year of college because of the Bible study I was a part of my first year. Their leadership gave me the confidence I needed to make it through the most trivial year of my college experience. We were all treated as equals and were all encouraged to share when we felt we needed to. I also liked that if we felt uncomfortable were not pushed to take part. For example, each week a new person led our final prayer. I was not sure I could do this and they did not try to make me. They let me get comfortable and by the end of the year I also participated in saying the final prayer. I feel because they allowed me to get comfortable with what I was doing and never pressured me I was able to connect with them better and was able to deepen my faith. To be honest I was not sure I could do it. I felt I was not as knowledgeable about the Bible as the other girls were and I wondered what would happen if I was asked something and did not know how to respond. I realized the weekly study was not about what I could not do. We all contributed to the study and it was my job to encourage others to share and to contribute in a way that everyone on the journey could grow deeper in their faith with God. Kouzes and Posner (2006) point out that give others some power helps strengthen the group. I agree with this assessment and use this in my own leadership
