The most effective leadership I have incurred was during a difficult transition in my life. Moving to college and not knowing what I was in for or how I would meet anyone was a scary concept, but the leadership of a few girls in the dorm next door helped me succeed. I truly believe I made it through my first year of college because of the Bible study I was a part of my first year. We were all treated as equals and were all encouraged to share when we felt we needed to. I also liked that if we felt uncomfortable were not pushed to take part. For example, each week a new person led our final prayer. I was not sure I could do this and they did not try to make me. They let me get comfortable and by the end of the year I also participated in saying the final prayer. I feel because they allowed me to get comfortable with what I was doing and never pressured me I was able to connect with them better and was able to deepen my faith. To be honest I was not sure I could do it. I felt I was not as knowledgeable about the Bible as the other girls were and I wondered what would happen if I was asked something and did not know how to respond. I realized the weekly study was not about what I could not do. We all contributed to the study and it was my job to encourage others to share and to contribute in a way that everyone on the journey could grow deeper in their faith with God. Kouzes and Posner (2006) point out that give others some power helps strengthen the group. I agree with this assessment and use this in my own leadership
Encarta Dictionary within Microsoft Word defines leadership as,” the ability to guide, direct, or influence people.” Expanding upon that definition, my personal definition is influencing people to follow to achieve a goal, regardless of how unpleasant. Leadership is not something that happens overnight, it needs to be cultivated over time. During that process, it is necessary to identify delinquencies and make adjustments. Reviewing the feedback provided by my LPI/360 assessment, the three areas identified I need to improve on are, praising people for a job well done, actively listening to diverse points of view, and becoming more visible within the workplace.

Being a leader is no simple task. During my Eagle Scout project, I lead a range of people, from adults to youth. It was my job to make sure everyone was working and, that everyone was capable of doing their task. This paper will study the different facets of leadership and power in small group interactions. The variety and number of studies that have focused on leadership and power attest to the importance and ambiguousness that surround any attempts to define their origins or implications. First, the definitions of leadership and power from a social psychological viewpoint will be presented. Then a discussion will follow examining the effect of different variables on the leadership effectiveness and then a look at the convergence of power and leadership and their interrelationship.
Becoming a leader is never an easy task. It is complex with rational decision making and accepting responsibility for those decisions. Being the leader, does not mean that you always make the best choice, but it does mean you learn and grow from all you experiences. Sometimes becoming a leader is not a choice, but a responsibility that you inherit. Leaders are not born, but are created through trial and error. A true leader cares for his subordinate and will always respect, listen, and mentor them, but a true leader will also discipline correct subordinates when needed. Particularly, two members within my group began to emerge as leaders due to their knowledge, skills, as well as experience working with our chosen population. Although I always view them as ‘experts’ in this topic, our group became less focused on our goals and more concerned about the ‘power struggle’ between our two leaders, before we could reach any consensus. Essentially, our group had two authoritarians butting heads and trying to take lead throughout the beginning of the group process. Thus, the other members or ‘followers’ contribution, like mine, seem to not matter unless they adhered to either leaders’ opinions without question. Leaders lead. They lead by example, by demonstrating and living out organizational values, and by being seen. A good leader will never ask a teammate to do something they are not willing to do. Leaders also clearly understand the central purpose of their organization and ensure it is crystal clear to every member of the team...and they are relentless in pursuing it.
In all the general aspects of this particular term one would conclude that, “Leadership” embodies different characteristics, goals, rules, and standards for different positions in society. In the text, Great Leader, Great Teacher: Recovering the Biblical Vision for Leaders, author Gary Bredfeldt states, “The nature of leadership differs from situation to situation. What is required of a leader on the battlefield is quite different from what is required on the ball field or mission field. Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all formula.” This bold statement makes minds take a deeper look at the general definition of leadership and how each individual can theoretically determine what that is for their lives. In addition, from a Christian Worldview perspective what attributes in which the Scripture provides on servitude can be applicable and relevant to becoming a successful leader.

As a leader I want to focus more what other people have to offer. I want to focus on what my followers have to say and what ideas they have to bring to the table. In a leadership situation everyone that is supposed to be involved should be involved. No leader should single someone out leaving the rest to sit silent. I should never pick favorites. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power.
