An author can take hours and describe an image but it will never have the full effect of actually showing the audience the image. Images are a very powerful tool to utilize when not only trying to show viewers the topic you have described to them, but also when attempting to make viewers feel a certain way about the topic. The Salvation army uses a graphic image to successfully persuade viewers into seeing things that culture tries to avoid discussing and to get the audience to take action against this topic. There is no bright colors, and they do not go out of their way to draw attention to their ad. For example the writing in the ad is only white. “Why is it so hard to see black and blue?” appears larger than the rest of the writing on the ad because that is what the author is hoping for the viewer to focus on while looking at the ad. The writing is simple, but yet has a large effect on the viewer. It causes the audience to think about what they do in their own life. . The organization chose a simple grey background and white lettering to get viewers to focus mainly on the girl. The logos of the image is used when it is stated that, “one in six women are victims of abuse,” which shows the audience how frequently domestic abuse occurs. Many people in our society will very quickly share something interesting that they see online, however, they will not take the time to read statistics. Adding the logos into this advertisement allows the viewer to actually know the statistics of domestic abuse. The ethos displayed in this paper is shown through the advertisement being sent out by the Salvation army. The Salvation army is an organization that many people are aware of, which makes it an accredited source. When someone has actually heard of the organization promoting an advertisement, it helps them to trust the information they have learned from it. Pathos is the final form of literary devices used in this ad, it pulls at the audience’s emotions. When the viewer looks at this ad, they feel sympathetic for the girl and this is where the pathos appear in this ad. Guilt is also used in this ad because it makes the audience realize that the they may have been one of the people who shared the image of the dress but was unaware of the domestic abuse

As I exam the advertisement for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (ASPCA), I will show how they use the pathos, ethos, and logos – also known as Aristotle’s Theory of Persuasion.
This advertisement features Pathos, because the little boy in the advertisement will probably make people feel guilty, because they spend a lot of money on unnecessary things and waste it, but this child says “Don’t I deserve a happy life?”, and this will probably make people from our society want to spend money to support this cause. This advertisement also features patriotism, because it suggests that purchasing this product will show the love, and support you have towards your country. This company makes people from America want to support this cause. It says in the advertisement,” Help stop child poverty in America”. This advertisement also features Transfer andWeasel Words because it uses positive words, and positive images to suggest that the product being sold is also positive.
Jean Kilbourne’s “Two Way a Woman Can Get Hurt: Advertising and Violence” is a section of a book titled: “Deadly Persuasion: Why Women and Girls Must Fight the Addictive Power of Advertising” that was originally published in 1999. It is about the images of women that advertisements illustrate. The central claim or thesis of the document is that: “advertising helps to create a climate in which certain attitudes and values flourish and it plays a role in shaping people’s ideas” (paraphrase). The author wants people by all genders and young children to acknowledge a right attitude towards what is shown in the advertisements so that the standards of behavior will not be influenced. As a result, it enables the negative contribution from the advertisements to be limited or eliminated.
The first thing you notice when you turn the page is the color. It grabs your attention. The color is gold and it’s very bright. The color gold is suppose to represent things of value because gold is valuable. The writing on the article is blue and it has a blue camel right above the slogan. The blue and gold coorindates really well. This advertisement would make you stop and read on or even just look at the colors.
The Salvation Army prides itself in continuously offering needs based programs or service to communities that fall below the poverty line. The Salvation Army has a wide array of strengths including: 1) Professional networking; a channel through which ideas, resources and services can be exchanged between Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations 2) Global notoriety; the Salvation Army is a world-wide organization, sustained primarily through government funds and public donations 3) Longevity; a demonstrated history of success. This history of longevity affords them a positive, solid reputation in participating communities (The Salvation Army USA, 2018).
The blues and whites catches a consumer’s eye and brings out the other elements of the advertisement. This is in stark contrast with the Sheba advertisement. Their advertisement’s color did not go well together and did not seem to fit. Also, the Fancy Feast advertisement had good texture, which helped catch the eye of consumers. The Sheba advertisement did not have much texture and was very bland.
The images which are used for advertisements, newspapers, or magazines usually include the significant purposes and ideas. Then, in many cases, they are described by ethos, pathos, and logos which are used frequently to catch viewers’ attentions. Even if the ads do not have concrete strategies and clear opinions, those ads may not be able to persuade the viewers. In other words, the excellent ads could use one of three persuasions. The following advertisement is the good example of embedded pathos in the advertisement.

Therefore, the overall effectiveness of this Salvation Army advertisement is very well done, it provides an emotional connection, provides logical facts, and uses proper creditability. The main element of pathos is the idea that children are suffering and with the help of a donation these children’s lives can be changed forever. For logos the use logical facts, such as the exact purposes have the company and how the donations are used. Ethos provides the advertisement with the company’s already well-known creditability and respect. This advertisement shows how effect the use of ethos, logos, and pathos can work to sell a product or and overall idea of hope to every audience.
Advertisements are all over the place. Whether they are on TV, radio, or in a magazine, there is no way that you can escape them. They all have their target audience who they have specifically designed the ad for. And of course they are selling their product. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the advertiser’s study all the ways that they can attract the person’s attention. One way that is used the most and is in some ways very controversial is use of sex to sell products. For me to analyze this advertisement I used the rhetorical triangle, as well as ethos, pathos, and logos.
The ad itself appears to be in a military instructional setting. The viewer’s eye is immediately drawn to the central focus of the document; a strong, physically fit African American woman in a combat stance, facilitating the techniques of martial arts. The entire ad is almost devoid of color, using instead, shading and highlighting strategies to draw the eye through the ad in the manner intended. Most of the ad is darkly shaded and blurred, lighter shades are used in the backdrop directly behind the woman highlighting her as the standout and the most important feature of the advertisement. Looking further, the viewer sees a group of Marines surrounding and beneath the woman focusing upward, as if she is on a stage giving a demonstration. Whereas the female is clearly outlined and visible, the surrounding men are darkened, almost blurry. She is obviously the boss here.
Thus, we can assume that the audience itself, the members who believe in the content of ads and its sincerity, as well as, people who agree with the portrait of the women that is being created are the only prisoners in this particular situation. “To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images” (Plato 868). When most people look at an advertisement in a magazine or on the tv, or even just listen to them on the radio, they don't really think too deeply into what makes an ad effective.
