Survival is earned not given Jack London’s adventure fiction book The Call of the Wild has many amazing themes and ideas. Survival is earned not given. Survival is shown a lot throughout the book. Starting from the beginning of the book where Buck is sold and his new environment requires him to adapt to the new environment and living circumstances. Later on Buck needs to take on the roll of leading the pack as being alpha. Other examples would be living with John Thornton and when he chooses to live with the pack of wolves. This claim is shown quite a lot throughout the Book and is used not only in the book, but also is true in real life. As expressed in the book, an example is when Buck kills the Indians. “It was Buck, a live hurricane of fury, hurling himself upon them in a frenzy to destroy”(London 111). This relates to the claim because the Indians could easily kill Buck, as easy as Buck can deliver pain to them. Buck has earns and trains his power and strengths to be able to kill these Indians which shows that Survival is earned not given as Buck was required to work hard to kill the Indians, they did not just get die on their own. These examples of Buck killing his prey ( the moose ), taking 4 days of hard work and persistent harassment to the moose shows that it Survival is earned not given. He had to suffer and hunt the moose for 4 days on end before he could bring down the beast, the moose did not just kill itself.
