In the story of James Fennimore Cooper about Deerslayer, we can see that the definition of James Fennimore Cooper is kind of similar and also have some different characteristics that he thinks the heroes needed. The story “Deerslayer” of James Cooper tells us about a young white man, he grew up with Mohicans and lived the wildness when he was a little. Just like a normal hero, Deerslayer is strong, including moral and physical. He is hunter , he travel around the wood everyday, he hunts a lot of animals, so he is strong in physical. In the story and the movie, we can see that by himself, he can defeat more than one enemies. .Also he has a good heart, he helps others , respects the elder, and hates the overreach and never working contrary to conscience. This is one of many characteristics of Deerslayer. The next characteristic of Natty Bumppo is fair and. Fair is a necessary characteristic for a hero, he treats people in the good ways and he is always fair, no matters that’s Indian or White. In the story either the movie, he killed other Indians just to save the Whites from the death. Also, he treated his people fairly, they all admire him like a leader, but for him they all are friends. And that is one of his characteristics. The next characteristic of Deerslayer is moral certainty and resourcefulness.. He knows what’s gonna happen and he knows what to do in that situation. When they ran away from other Indian, he was the person who decided what to do in that situation. Also when the Indian found out them, he planned to run away, and then come back to save his lover from the death. So he be like knew what is going to happen and know what to prepare for it. And that is one of his
There are other scenes in the film that shows how these Indians might be portrayed as brutal savages. For example, when Dunbar was venturing about, he came into contact with a woman, who by her way of dressing was mistaken for an Indian woman, that was on the verge of suicide. After her ranting and raging, she fainted, and he then carried her back to her village. Instead of the Indians showing gratitude, some showed fear, while one man dragged the injured woman away from Dunbar and closer to his people. Another time, which is connected to this same woman, was when her family was brutally and heartlessly killed by Indians, and she alone remained to remember the episode in her past.
Assignment details: Analyze the components of the hero’s journey. Basically, support the argument that Jaws follows the epic hero cycle. Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
James Fenimore Copper presents Deerslayer as a man of integrity, virtue, and honor. He is a warrior who lives by his word. Even if the situation places his life in jeopardy, he refuses to abandon what he believes in and what he says he will do. Deerslayer’s greatest display of character and honor is seen when he refuses to compromise his standards even though it threatens his life.
Lieutenant John Dunbar went through several drastic changes to become Dances With Wolves. In his short time with the Indians, he turned enemies into friends and foreign customs into his own. His view of the Sioux changes more severe than he does. No longer does he view them as savages without order, but now he sees them as a civilized group with more heart than anyone he has met before. His experiences with the Sioux help to open his eyes and change him into a man he never was and never thought he’d be.
The film Dances with Wolves, that was written by Michael Blake and directed by Kevin Costner, helps to shift our perspective of Native Americans from one of stereotypical distaste, to one of support and respect. According to an anonymous critic on www.eFilmcritic.com "This is one of the few westerns that devotes its time to looking at the plight of the American Indians (particularly the Sioux), who were thought by some as even more subhuman than blacks during the 1800's (and even during parts of the 1900's)." It has always been thought that Native Americans of old were savage, non-feeling, unemotional, cold-blooded killers. It is difficult for people to see them as anything else. I have come to the understanding that they are much more that. They are kind, feeling, understanding, loving, loyal, helpful, good people just like us. There is no difference between them and us. The film helps us to think of them as real people that can relate and understand us.
Typically a hero is seen wearing tights, or working in secret, but in reality heroes are ordinary people doing extraordinary acts. A hero is someone who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. In Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Atticus Finch is a true hero. Atticus is definitely a hero as proven by his morality, his courage and finally his abilities as well as intelligence.
Likewise, Natty was a skilled warrior. “…Tempted the young man to retaliate… Natty threw back the weapon at his assailant, Panther neither raising an arm nor bending his head to avoid it.” (Deerslayer; pg. 150) Chingachgook, his adopted father, taught him to be a warrior. Panther, chief of the Huron village, never thought after throwing the weapon Natty would retaliate. Panther was so shocked that he did not have time to react. Natty was a wise, and accomplished warrior. Also, in The Last of the Mohicans, the opening scene of the movie shows Natty as a skilled warrior and pure at heart. Magua, who was a two-faced Indian, attacked the English on their way to the fort. Natty, Chingachgook, and his brother see this and help fight against Magua. Natty killed about four Indians in this scene.
An important element of the film is the way that it sets us up to respect John Dunbar, for the qualities that he has. One of these qualities is bravery. In the beginning of the film, Dunbar is shown in a battle and he decides to get on a horse and ride across the front lines of his enemies fearlessly looking into the very faces of those whom are supposed to be his greatest enemies. This seems to be a foreshadow of the first meeting of Dunbar with the Sioux Indians, because like in the opening scene, he is unafraid to look into the face of a man who would usually be considered his enemy.
A hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievement, or noble qualities. John Jay was a hero because he was one the nation’s Founding Fathers. He helped bring independence to the colonies along with creating a constitution
The stereotypical hero is usually skilled with a weapon. Natty is in pioneer times, so there isn’t much choice in weaponry. Besides his gun that he kills deer with, there isn’t much that Deerslayer can do. When facing the tribe, waiting on his sentence, Le Panther, the Huron leader, throws a tomahawk at Natty. With his quick thinking he grabs the tomahawk before it even gets to him. He throws it back at Panther.
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. One characteristic of an American Hero that Nathaniel relates to is that he is a loner. He does not belong to any particular group of people or society. Nathaniel seeks justice above all things and always puts the mass of people first to save them. Nathaniel also possesses traits of a hero by having a damsel in distress, in Last of the Mohicans Nathaniel’s damsel in distress is Cora Munro. He does anything to make sure she is safe and protects her at all costs. As most heroes do, Nathaniel has a sidekick, Major Duncan Heyward. Heyward assists Nathaniel in obtaining justice and protecting Cora. For example , in the end of the movie the Hurons want to kill Cora as revenge for the death of Magua’s children and Nathaniel proposes that they take him rather than Cora but Heyward offers up himself , sacrificing himself to protect Cora by giving her a better chance of surviving with Nathaniel. As Heyward is being burned alive , Nathaniel uses his super power, which is to make accurate shots using a rifle, to save Heyward by shooting and killing him to put him out of his misery. Nathaniel defeats the Hurons and saves his damsel in distress all in the name of justice, as any American
