Survival of the fittest is a theme in many books, it is also a major theme in the book The Call of the Wild. Survival of the fittest means, if people are fit enough, they will be able to survive in the wild. They need to have many qualities to be able to survive including, hunting, patience, bravery, and many more. In the book Thornton is very different from Charles, Mercedes, and Hal. Thornton has many of these qualities, while the family has little of those qualities. This sets them apart in many ways, which makes it easier for Thornton to survive, while it makes it hard for the family to survive in the cold and harsh forces of nature during the gold rush. One meaning of survival of the fittest is if people are able to hunt and make food …show more content…
If someone didn't have this skill, then they would first of all, never find gold, and they would never find food. If someone didn't portray this skill, then they would give up on finding gold and leave the gold rush. Causing them to leave disappointed and never make any money. But if the person did wait for the gold they might have fell upon some and become wealthy. They also have to be patient on finding food. If they do not wait for food, then they will not find food, causing them to become hungry and weak, then eventually die. But if they had this skill, they would be able to wait and find an animal, and then later kill it for food. This would help them survive in the wild a little longer. Thornton possessed this skill, this eventually caused him to find gold, which made him rich. But if he gave up, then he never would have found it. An example of this is he trekked for lots of mile with his dogs, just to find some pans of gold. Also, if Thornton never waited to find food, then he would have went hungry. But he was patient and eventually always found some food for himself and his dogs to eat, helping him survive in the wild. Even though some people posses this skill, others do not. A good example of this is Charles, Hal and Mercedes. They were never patient, from the beginning to the end of their journey, they never rested or calmed down. This eventually caused them to fail their mission. If they …show more content…
People need to posses this skill in order to survive in the wild. If they don't, then they will not be able to survive in the harsh conditions or fight against animals and other things for food. This will cause them to surrender from the harsh conditions and they would not be able to survive, and they would leave, not finding any gold and not accomplishing their mission. An example of someone who owned this skill was Thornton. He was very brave and courageous. He would fight against the harsh conditions and push through all of it to find some gold. He also was brave enough to fight against other people and animals for food. One example of Thornton's bravery was when he fought to the death with the Indians. If he was not brave enough, then he would have ran away and surrendered, but no, he fought them and eventually lost the fatal battle. This skill helped him survive in the wild longer, and if he didn't have this skill, then he would have died sooner or he would have left the gold rush. A good example of people without this skill were Charles, Mercedes, and Hal. They were not brave. They almost surrendered to the harsh conditions and they never fought anyone or anything for food or items. In the end they ended up dying from the harsh conditions they couldn't survive in, (they fell into a frozen lake), and if they had this skill, then they might have been able to survive a little longer then they
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his

Characters: The main character in The Sign of the Beaver is Matt. Matt’s character traits are responsibility, brave, sense of humor, respectful, smart, and curious. Attean is another main character and his character traits are responsibly, brave, serious, bold, mysterious, smart, resourceful, and light on his feet. Saknis is another character; his character traits are kindness, trustworthiness, fair, respectful, and brave. Next is Attean’s grandmother. His grandmother was stubborn, strict, hateful and prejudice, she hated white people. The final character is Matt’s father his character traits are to be loving, caring, honest, and faithful.
I think that Chris is a very motivated person. He knows what he wants and he is willing to do anything to get there. This quote describes when Gallien was trying to persuade Chris not to go through with his hitchhiking plan, “But he wouldn’t give an inch. He had an answer for everything I threw at him” (Krakauer 7). This quote shows the depth of his motivated character because of his unwillingness to change his mind. Additionally, I also think that Chris has a very optimistic character and outlook on life. Chris is not willing to totally accept the danger of what he is about to do because he is quick to hope for the best. Proof of this character trait can be found in the following quote, “‘I’m absolutely positive… I won’t run into anything I can’t deal with on my own’” (Krakauer 7).

Survival skills can take over when in a life or death situation. The protagonist, Rainsford, in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a clear example of this. While on the way to hunting expedition Rainsford is thrown overboard his ship and swims to the nearby shore of Ship Trap Island. He explores the island and finds a chateau. He is invited in by the owner, General Zarroff, and they begin to converse. Here Rainsford learns something dark about this man that will lead to him being on the run for his life. He is forced to let his survival skills, resourcefulness, thinking on his feet, and his good eye, take center stage in the fight for his life.
Every story we read this year was more than interesting. Each one had a different plot, different problems and many different personalities from an enormous group of people. I wonder how long it took for them to realize that what they did was incredible? Every last one of these people had to overcome something in their lives no matter how troublesome it seemed to be.
I think this learning matters because it shows that when you become greedy, (most of the time) nothing good can happen to you and you end up in a bad place. It also matters because it shows if you become too imaginative combined with a little greed, you can go crazy. I think this a lesson to be learned for others so it doesn't happen to
Christopher Johnson McCandless, the main character in the book “Into the Wild,” had made a lot of friends even though he did not like people. Wayne Westerberg was one of Chris’s friends who he met in a bar. Chris also befriended a girl named Jan Burre. Another person who befriended Chris was a guy named Ronald Franz,
As a result, their lives changed, for better or for worse. They were inexperienced, and therefore made many mistakes, which made their life in Chicago very worrisome. However, their ideology and strong belief in determination and hard work kept them alive. In a land swarming with predators, this family of delicate prey found their place and made the best of it, despite the fact that America, a somewhat disarranged and hazardous jungle, was not the wholesome promise-land they had predicted it to be.
Obtaining this vital skill is important for everyone because it lets individuals become what they want even when they might not be able to otherwise, exactly like what Snape did in Harry
In the story, Young Goodman Brown, the character, Goodman Brown changes throughout the story. In the beginning he was a kind man, loving husband with nothing holding him down, not even the warnings of his wife, Faith. As he walked and talked with the Devil, he became more aware of what had happened in the past with his own family. When he saw the Devil talk with Goody Cloyse on the path in the woods, he figured out by the nature of their conversation that the Devil was more mischievous than he thought. He started to have uncertainties about the errand he was on. At that point, Goodman Brown told the devil he was not going another step. Shortly after the Devil left him in the path, Brown found a ribbon on a branch of a tree
excellent reasoning and deduction abilities. An example of this is connected to the quote above from The Speckled Band. After Holmes discovered that the bell pull (rope) was a dummy, and took into account only facts that may be considered, by lesser men. insignificant, he solved the mystery of a woman's death. It would crawl down the rope.. sooner or later she must fall victim."
