Every story we read this year was more than interesting. Each one had a different plot, different problems and many different personalities from an enormous group of people. I wonder how long it took for them to realize that what they did was incredible? Every last one of these people had to overcome something in their lives no matter how troublesome it seemed to be. Alma from the story of Time of the Wolves managed to face many different conflicts but the main one she faced was Person vs Person. In the story it discusses two people, Alma and Sarah, getting attacked by wolves. During this process, something went wrong with Sarah and she became furious and began attacking Alma. After I was done reading the story I realized that Alma had …show more content…
No matter how badly Alma did not want to go help take care of Sarah, she did because she put another person's well being before hers. This woman was also very determined in this story in realizing what she needs to do and is able to multitask in a very difficult situation. The biggest obstacle for Alma was dealing with Sarah and having to take care of her, the second biggest struggle would have been trying to get rid of the wolves. Even though she was being attacked by another human, she was also being attacked by multiple animals at the same time. In the story it doesn’t talk about how she panics or how she couldn’t handle it and gave up. Alma seemed to be the strongest person in the story, she kept her emotions together and realized what had to be done. I realize that out of all the stories we read, this one was probably the least traumatic …show more content…
Both people faced the conflict of Person vs Person and Person vs Self but in multiple levels of severity. Alma had a different situation when dealing with animals, another person and the weather conditions. Rob had to deal with multiple people and much harsher conditions. After I was done reading both of these stories I knew that I myself would not be able to handle most of the stuff that happened or the other possibilities that could have happened. I am tough physically but not mentally in some situations and in others I am the opposite, you have to be able to be both mentally and physically strong to be able to climb Everest. You have to have a huge amount of perseverance to want to achieve your goals and once you have achieved them, help others achieve theirs. These two characters were both put into the position of having to put others and their feelings before their own. In the time of the wolves the narrator is expressing the actions of Alma when the wolves are attacking. “It lunged once more. Her finger squeezed the trigger. The wolf fell…”. “And now she crossed the prairie, she did so with courage, for she and the lifesaving fear were one.” Both of these quotes show that she had no hesitation in what she was doing and she prohibited to let her past affect her in
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
Suppose you had a 12-year-old son who had gne with you to the woods to build a log cabin, and then had to return home to bring the rest of your family there to live. Would you leave your son to stay at the cabin while you retrieve the rest of your family? This was the issue Matt's father had to deal with in the novel, The Sign of the Beaver. I personally believe that Matt's father should not have left Matt alone in the cabin for three reasons: Matt was not prepared to be left alone, the Indian presence was unknown, and Robinson Crusoe offended Attean when read to him by Matt.
There was a game. The Westing Game. To find an heir. To win it all. Sixteen players. Eight teams. One winner. Who became the heir of Sam Westing. Sam Westing died, or supposedly did, and his sixteen heirs were trying to figure out who killed him, or if he was killed at all, which we found out, later in the novel was true. All of the teams had different clues, and they tried to figure out what those clues meant. In the mystery novel, The Westing Game, written by Ellen Raskin, the elements that were mysterious were: the main conflict, setting, characterization, and the technique the author gave clues to the reader.
Characters: The main character in The Sign of the Beaver is Matt. Matt’s character traits are responsibility, brave, sense of humor, respectful, smart, and curious. Attean is another main character and his character traits are responsibly, brave, serious, bold, mysterious, smart, resourceful, and light on his feet. Saknis is another character; his character traits are kindness, trustworthiness, fair, respectful, and brave. Next is Attean’s grandmother. His grandmother was stubborn, strict, hateful and prejudice, she hated white people. The final character is Matt’s father his character traits are to be loving, caring, honest, and faithful.
In the novel In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, is a story of three girls who develop from being innocent girls to being part of a revolutionary to stop Trujillo a Dominican dictator. Throughout the story we see each of the sisters go through hard moments in their life. However the sister that has developed the most though is Minerva. She goes from being just a girl with a dream to be a lawyer too a woman willing to sacrifice anything to support the revolution and stop Trujillo.
“Psychopaths do not act like Hannibal Lector or Norman Bates. They come off like Hugh Grant, in his most adorable role.” Eric and Dylan are true psychopaths. Psychopaths develop in many different ways. Some hide their psychopathic ideals like Eric and Dylan.
The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an autobiography that describes Elie 's time in the Holocaust. He is a sixteen year old jewish boy in the Auschwitz concentration camp. He is a thin scrawny boy, but is very strong. His hair is coal black, but looks bad because it is very short and greasy. His eyes look dark and cold with sadness in them because of the loss he’s experienced in the concentration camp. His hands are torn to pieces because he is a hard worker. He is very dirty due to not being able to shower often. Bruises are found all over him from the beating he often gets if he does not follow protocol in the concentration camp. His feet are cut up and often bleeding because he is on them so much. The bags under his eyes are so distinct because he gets no sleep. His body is broken down and hurt, even after he gets out of the concentration camp his body has still not recovered from the scars.
...ave brings them out of their protective and secluded shells. In both stories the theme of oppression, one mental the other physical, resulting in a victory, one internal the other external, prove that with determination and a belief in a higher power you can survive any situation.
...ave begged for her son and grandchildren life instead of trying save her life. The type of literary element shown here is conflict. The type of conflict that is shown is man versus man because the grandmother is constantly trying to convince someone in doing something else. It also shows conflict because the grandmother was begging for her life, but at the end that did not work because she ended up getting killed either way.
Simon is easily the most important character in William Golding’s classic Lord of the Flies, a book where several schoolboys find themselves on an island after a plane evacuating them from war-ridden Britain. The book documents their attempts to create a civilized society to wait for rescue, and how the inherent savage instinct of humans ruined the peace and destroyed rhyme and reason. Simon is a gateway to the intentions of the novel for the readers. His character changes throughout the book, such as when he faints, when he tells Ralph to continue as the leader, and, arguably at the apex of the book, when he hallucinates the Lord of the Flies.
The Creation (pg 3-5): (1) The character of the creator almost appears nonchalant as it allowed for Nature, the less kindlier supernatural force, to reign over the “shapelessness chaos” for a seemingly long time until he steps in and confines everything to order, such as “settling arguments.” This shows that he could’ve “shaped” the universe long ago, but chose to let chaos reign for an unknown amount of time. (2) The speaker seems to have no doubt that what he is saying is, in fact, the truth, however, he doesn’t have any sort of emotion given in his exposé, leading me to believe that he’s indifferent, rather than confident, in this revelation. (3) When you remove the creator from the story, you also remove any divine sort of connotation
When an individual travels into unknown territory, their greatest chance of survival is in gaining an understanding of the land and the people that inhabit it. The natives are the people who understand the location and what simple missteps could lead to death. The natives live in a world different from the travelers, and the knowledge they carry is greater than anything brought from home. How a character adapts to the environment influences their survival and what they retain after returning home. In Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and State of Wonder by Ann Patchett the main characters must adjust to being in an unknown location or face death. The narrators of State of Wonder and Heart of Darkness journey into unfamiliar territory, however
In the beginning of both of the pieces of literature, the main character(s) have not had the experience that will shape their values yet. Rather, as time moves forward in the stories, the
The struggles both characters face demonstrate character development and contribute to the themes of the stories. Both short stories prove to be literally effective in that they disclose the main themes at the outset of each story. Although the themes may alter over the course of the stories, they are clearly defined in their respective introductions.
