Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
Suppose you had a 12-year-old son who had gne with you to the woods to build a log cabin, and then had to return home to bring the rest of your family there to live. Would you leave your son to stay at the cabin while you retrieve the rest of your family? This was the issue Matt's father had to deal with in the novel, The Sign of the Beaver. I personally believe that Matt's father should not have left Matt alone in the cabin for three reasons: Matt was not prepared to be left alone, the Indian presence was unknown, and Robinson Crusoe offended Attean when read to him by Matt.
“The thing I hate about space is that you can feel how big and empty it is… ”
In the short story The Father by Hugh Garner there is boy who’s father is not involved in his life. This is mostly because he is always drunk. Because of this Johnny, the father’s son, has not really been able to connect with his father. He is never there for Johnny when he needs him and is always embarrassing him. This made me really sad as I cannot imagine living without a loving father. I do not think that anyone should have to live without the care of their father. I can only imagine how sad that Johnny must have felt to not have a good father in his life. It must have been very hard for Johnny to see all of the other scout and their father’s at the banquet, knowing that he would never have a good father-son relationship with his dad. The fact that he did not feel comfortable asking his dad to come to the scouts banquet himself,
In the novel, The Things They Carried, characters often share key similarities and differences between one another. Specifically, Rat Kiley and Tim O’Brien share many of the same qualities in story telling, but also display different approaches to coping with the apprehension of war. Rat Kiley is a comedian and born story teller, often embellishing his stories to give them more thrill and excitement for his listeners. Perhaps he does this because he wants to be accepted. Rat relates to the author, Tim O’Brien, because he has a flexible relationship with the truth when it comes to telling stories. For both characters, it is important that the audience understands the true meaning of the stories they are telling and that the reader feels the
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, there are two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story starts off with Rainsford and Rainsford’s hunting partner, Whitney, on a yacht heading to Rio de Janiero to hunt big game animals. Rainsford ends up becoming trapped on Ship-Trap Island, and that is where he and the reader are introduced to General Zaroff. Unfortunately for Rainsford, General Zaroff is not your normal General. General Zaroff and Rainsford are similar and different in many ways, and even though Rainsford believes that Zaroff is a sick individual, at the end of the story he becomes more like Zaroff than he realizes.
In Richard Wright’s Native Son, “rat metaphor” is referring to the opening scene of in which Bigger’s mother catches sight of a rat running around in their family bedroom. The mother shrieks in fear, and demands that Bigger kill it. Bigger chases the rat around the room with a skillet, skillfully dodging the rat’s feeble attempts at attacking Bigger, until finally he through the skillet and struck the rat dead. The entire passage is dramatic, with detailed descriptions on the rat’s movements and reactions. When Bigger steps towards the rat, it “emitted a long thin song of defiance, its black beady eyes glittering, its tiny forefeet pawing the air restlessly.” The rat runs to the other side of the room, and then “it reared once more and bared
Within each of us lurks a beast waiting for the first opportunity to bare its ugly fangs. A vestige of ages past, when violence and destruction was man’s only language, the beast only needs a bit of chaos to resurface. William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, is hinged on this idea. In the story, a group of English schoolboys are stranded on an island without a single adult. They try initially to keep a rough semblance of civilization in place, calling assemblies and lighting signal fires, but the beast is soon awoken from its primeval slumber to wreak terror among them. Golding makes it his duty to reveal the innate evil of the human soul in Lord of the Flies by not only displaying general chaos, but detailing specific instances where the violent nature of man bleeds through. The “darkness of man’s heart” (Golding 202) is demonstrated when Roger feels the sudden urge to throw rocks toward a younger boy, when the boys’ game of mock hunting turns a little too real, and when the little savages murder Simon in a passionate frenzy.
It is not wise for a predator to underestimate its prey. In “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Richard Connel, General Zaroff has become disinterested in hunting simple animals; he needs the challenge of hunting an animal that can reason. Mr. Rainsford is the next item on General Zaroff’s menu. The only way to get out is by beating Zaroff at his own game. A game of hunting that means life and death. Zaroff is the hunter and Rainsford is the hunted. In, “The Smuggler,” written by Victor Canning, Tasso, like Rainsford, is being contested by a predator. He is known as the Great Man. The Great Man is interrogating Tasso for smuggling. Tasso must be clever at how he responds and how he displays himself, for his life is in danger. The antagonists
Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck illustrates many morals in the novel. This novel supports many themes. The characters make up most of messages in the novel. Some examples are the predatory nature of human existence, the bonds between men, the impossibility of the american dream, and the destructive imbalance of social power structures in american society. The themes of predatory nature and the bonds between two men are important to the novella ”Of Mice and Men” because of when Curley got into a fight with Lennie, when George would be mean to Lennie, and when Crooks was also being mean to Lennie.
Power allows people to do anything they want. They can use it in different ways, they can tell people to obey them, they can use it to hurt someone they hate, and even rob. They can also use it in a positive way, they can help people and do a lot of good things with it.

When you judge someone for their appearance, it will hurt them and the person might not be what you think. In the freak the mighty max was judged for his appearance because he looks like his dad. Max’s dad, Mr kane is in jail, but in jail he’s called killer kane. Everyone sees max as his dad so max does not have a friend and has to live at his grandparents' house. Alfred Lord Tennyson once said that “it is better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all”. This quote frames a central theme in Of Mice and Men. It states that a lot of characters in the book struggle with loss but they still rise above and stay optimistic. They feel they can one day live out their dreams and desires. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Candy teaches the reader the valuable life lessons of always pursuing your dreams, learning to accept death, and staying optimistic in the face of adversity.
A rat civilization was discovered today, the first time a civilization created by an animal other than a human was found. GRNN Reporter Gabe Rich, the discoverer of this breakthrough, has more: “I was taking a walk to a story I heard about in Thorn Valley Nature Reserve, and stumbled upon some rats with a rat-sized plow. They were in a field where it looked like they were about to plant some crops. I captured one, but the rest instantly fled. I said to myself, ‘At least I got one.’ It turned out these were no ordinary rats. They had modified DNA. I returned the one as soon as I could, which was a few hours. I am still stunned, as I thought only humans were capable of making, well, civilizations.” Dr. Robert Schultz, the mastermind behind NIMH
